Great point by both Davide and Frederico and credit does have to go to the composer and lyricist for sure. Ruben spoke about his inspiration back when Pedro Navaja was a massive hit and his favorite version of Mack the Knife was actually Bobby Darin's but he understood the history and acknowledged Louis for being the one to popularize the song in the US. I just love it when musicians do the right thing and recognize the ones who came before them and inspired their work.

Cuando era niña y mi papá escuchaba esta canción no entendía para nada la historia, solo me daba tristeza por lo que le pasó a Pedro navaja.

What a legend! I forgot about this performance for a while now. I'm in my 30s and I have been trying to teach the younger gens to respect and appreciate the importance of music. Most just laugh and shrug it off. But its important we preserve music. Growing up Hispanic (Guatemalan) I never really like hispanana music. Wasnt ashamed or hated it... just wanted to create my own identity like most of us do. By 13 I knew I was a fan of Motown, blues (real rockNroll) and yes, some white rock as well. It wasn't until my 20's I really got into marc antony (who in my subjective opinion is the greatest singer/vocalist/range just everything above) and then worked my way down and I love listen to blades! It's good to appreciate and love your heritage. Respect and preserve music yall! Or you'll have ppl who literally cant sing, use autotune and disrespect our very music and become famous (it's been happening for the past 15 years now) do it for the culture

I have love this song since I first heard it 1978 and been a fan of Mr Blades ever since. This song and "El Cantante" compose by Blades and song by Hector Lavoe made history and will never be forgotten! Mr Blades is a multi-talented scholar.

@@EGGUZMAN La Voe, was a great singer no doubt. I love his early work with Willie Colón. After that not so much. His voice suffered from all his substance abuse. Did you know that Blades wrote “El Cantante” for LaVoe? I saw them preform live at MSQ in the 70’s. When Fania was all the rave! Those were the days… Blades lyrics always tell a story. There’s always a message in his lyrics. His music is superb! Nothing quite like it. I love his voice more then any other sonero. That is my opinion. 🎙I also enjoy Santa Rosa, Marc. Not to many sonero’s left. Other greats were El Cano, el gran Maelo. Now it’s all about Bad Bunny, another great Residente! Time never stops. Everything changes… Everything has its time.

@@carmenfigueroa9329 Oh, I agree. Ruben sang about life and the oppression of the Latin people, and yes I knew about Blades being the author and written “El Cantante”. No question Ruben is at the top of the salseros singers. The word around the group of singers at the time was he mimic Cheo Feliciano voice, so his voice wasn’t so as unique where Hector was. “La Voz” The Voice” that no one matched and the reason why Willy Colon had Hector sing El Cantante as well as . I met Willy Colon years ago in 1986 at a book store in Yonkers NY and he told me all about it. Plus other juice stories of the Fania Allstars and how he met Ruben Blades working at the mailroom at the Fania office building in NYC of that time. He didn’t know that Ruben could sing so well! and Willy left the band to Hector and arranged another for him and Blades. My best memories of Ruben were when he sang for Ray Barreto. Talk about hard hitting salsa! Wow…those tunes were the bomb!

Pedro Navaja was inspired by Mack the Knife, they are essentially the same song with basically the same chords, lyrics, and theme. Blades is a massive fan of jazz and it is apparent in much of his music.

Esta canción es un clásico atemporal. En España, como curiosidad la trajo La Orquesta Platería, junto a Ligia Elena. Y de eso hace ya muchos años.
