hello ! i was just wondering something, i've heard about vulcanization with sulphur but it's done with heat in your example you just added sulphur to the cold mixture and it worked, what's the chemistry behind that ? if that could work with normal glue i can make my glues more elastic ! thanks.

Nice vids :) Might I ask what the final product is in the rubber form? Also, how does this change the casein melting point? I see a generic casein melting point of 280c on the net, is this fairly average? Thanks very much!

I know this is very old I am revisiting it and I've had some success and some of the areas. Also they finally sell pure casein in the US. I was very surprised to find it after all the looking I did before but it's become popular apparently. The thing is when we start out with a product that is already in an appropriate state to dissolve into water do we really want to use a alkaline solution? I was sitting here and your video randomly popped up and it made me think. It's already appropriate pH to go into solution is that's how we would drink it as a bodybuilder. If they left it acidic it would start clumping out by itself so it must be a Alkali already? I'm going to adjust the pH of some of the German recipes to see if that improves things

Would this be fish friendly? I'm looking for alternatives to soft plastic lures but most of the recipes for DIY bioplastic lures will dissolve in water after casting a few times. I don't want to be leaving unnecessary plastic waste in waterways so something that is more sustainable is the goal.

found that sodium hydroxide dissolves sulfur faster, and heat also must be applied. another method is: mix water+sodium+sulfur, and heat till all sulfur melted. then add the casein. still testing fillers to increase the output, starch wont do anygood, marble dust, graphite or active carbon works well. any inputs on the fillers would save me some testing time :) as for dry time, any ideas to shorten it?

Hi Rob! I bought a bag of 100% casein. As it turns out it is mycelium casein protein. You mention calcium caseinate is what you are using. I have read a few articles on the difference but it seems mycelium casein is also a type of calcium caseinate, albeit a smaller molecule from what I can make out. I have made my mixture with your specs of 10 Grams of Potassium Hydroxide and 200 ml of de ionized water and 100 grams of protein. However I can't seem to get my mixture homogeneous at all, and no matter how much i stir it forms clumps of what seems to be an insoluble material! I have tried adding extra potassium hydroxide but it still doesn't dissolve. Am I looking at two variants of protein in the solution? Whatever is dissolved also seems to form a plastic of sorts. Hoping you can help clarify...

So I've tried this 3 or 4 times and it always ends up turning is hard as a rock in the end. It's not a complicated recipe I do not know what the hell I'm doing wrong but that hockey puck I poured the excess into a jar lid probably the same as you and it was rubber for one day and then it turned hard as a rock literally as hard as a rock. Ever really really taking the time to do this right I even distilled my distilled water to make sure there wasn't anything in it. And yes I use calcium caseinate

@@therogerwilco yes technically deionized water is more pure but for the sake of a casing recipe it shouldn't matter as long as it's distilled and what are you talking about nitrates there's no nitrates in water

Nice video !! I found a casein mixture with only 80 % caseinate on it. The rest is chocolate, sugar and other food ingredients. It's a rhetoric question, yet I ought to ask: Would the performance of the final rubber be compromised too much? Should I just compensate the "impurity" of the caseinate by adjusting and adding more casein-food to your formula? I hope the other ingredients do not burn much with the KOH... Thanks once more for any comments !!!

Morning Robert. I've never seen this before today but in my lime plastering work casein is used in the final coat of a lime wash. I don't use it myself because a lime wall should be able to 'breath' and adding a rubberised solution to a paint surely would then make it non-porous which defeats the object of using lime does it not?

+David Kern best to use casein - rennet casein works well. No you can't use whey. Sodium hydroxide is fine as is washing soda which is sodium carbonate - just about any alkali will do as will just about any acid - the more you deviate though the more you will be experimenting - which i think is cool

Hello Robert, I just discovered your channel. Really interessting. Thx for sharing. For this particular video "Rubber Made From Milk", I don't understand how the casein is reticulated - not sure it is the proper term - since you don't add tannic acid or formaldheyde. Is the sulfur reticulating the casein and making it water resistant? Pretty sure you know all this but... if I can help... :) here is an idea you could do moisture absorption test, that will produce very reliable insights on the waterproofing proprities of your material. -Weight a sample -place it in a oven with a cup of water -heat up to 40°C, for 12h -mesure the sample again so we know how much water got in

+Robert Murray-Smith, I know it's ridiculous even on eBay 28 to 30% ammonia hydroxide is around $50 a gallon I can buy a thousand milliliters for $15 USD butt then you're paying for shipping is well. I've been making my own but it's a damn pain in the ass I don't know if you've ever synthesized ammonia hydroxide but it's not easy at room temperature to get 30% in any decent volume. You say you got 35% ammonia solution from the hardware store? That's amazing I would be so happy! I was under the impression that 30% is as strong as you can get at room temperature. it's funny that you posted this just now because I was sitting here looking around on the internet at suppliers like vwr insigma and they're ridiculously expensive reagent grade of course but I'm running out of options I really like using the ammonia for this casein. I guess I'll keep on synthesizing it or distilling 10%
