RTL Plus sign-on | 1980s

From the www.transdiffusion.org/ archives...
The German-language RTL Plus, broadcast from tiny Luxembourg but aimed at most of West Germany, starts the day with a three-part sign-on: 'Happi Luxembourg', borrowed from the Radio Luxembourg German Service, over a montage of Luxembourgeois sights; a NASA-style countdown sequence featuring various buttons being pressed in the radio station's control room (many of the button being pressed have nothing to do with television; those that do have nothing to do with starting the station for the day); and finally a long ident fully of whizzy 1980s-style computer-style animation. And then there's the most 1980s ever continuity announcer in his leather jacket.

I had a 1.5m dish in my backyard. My ex wanted just to watch TV on it but couldn't understand the different languages. Neither could I but you picked up a bit of it when it was in English with subtitles. RTL4 from the Netherlands was my favourite. I wanted to see what was up there and there was a lot but you needed the addons to get them which I got, d2mac receiver twin frequency LNB sat finder and went through 3 motor arms. I was a hobby I loved so much. The channels have generally all gone now and there are 1000's of rubbish and repeat channels now. TV1000. Filmnet decoders were popular for obvious reasons. I do miss those days with having just a box with cable fed and IPTV. It was much more fun moving the dish around and catching feeds you really shouldn't have been watching.

After closedown they would often carry Radio Luxembourg's English Service in mono over the testcard

We had cable TV in Bremen since 1984. Only RTLplus and SAT.1 wasn't allowed because of commercials on Sunday! :) That law changed in 1987 and we also got RTL, SAT1 and my favorite SKY Channel! :)

Impressive good start up from their good times before filling up with realities and boulevard shows.

I had a wide band satellite receiver 2.5m dish and time on my hands, too much my ex used to say (you can see what happened there!) RAI Uno, Childrens channel, Teleclub, 3sat and these guys. I spent so much time tuning it was my main hobby with decoders, d2mac receivers, betamax recorder and a room to myself. I went overboard especially during the 1st gulf war, I was watching live feeds to Atlanta for CNN, I wish I was back there now it was such an amazing time and hobby, nowadays to do anything exciting like that you need iptv and hope you find some test cards or something not mainstream. Ive gone cable now and said goodbye to sky so I have a spare dish, I dont think II will find anything now worth watching either

I remember back in the day, when we had Astra in Germany, how we could sometimes catch Sky One, NHK, Teleclub, Premiere unencrypted for short periods. For RAI, we had to move the dish from 19.2° East to 13° East to what is now known as Hot Bird. Funny thing: We could initially only watch an Norwegian TV via an Intelsat bird at 0.8° West. While I was on a school trip in 1993 in 5th grade in high school (or Gymnasium to be precise), my father was so pissed that he couldn't find Astra, that he literally hit the antenna out of frustration, and he finally found the correct bird. Eventually we were able to dial in the correct dish position and we were finally tuned in to what Astra was able to offer at the time.
