RTC battery replacement using a factory option

We replace an RTC module on a Biostar MB-8500TVX socket 7 motherboard, but utilize empty component locations on the motherboard to convert it to an external battery configuration.

necroware just repaired very similar board only with rtc and cache tag chip , and bios being socketed also why didn't you solder the clock crystal can to the big pad provided on board labeled x2? if you gong for "factory look" that is what factory would do

Just checked out his video-- crazy coincidence and shout out to necroware for making a great RTC replacement. Good point about the can.. I will do that now!

There's also a specification of 6pf load capacitance. the two unpopulated pad locations are for tiny capacitors to balance this out. Unsurprisingly it works without them but might wander because the parasitics are generally in the range of 4pf but fluxuate ... If you have problems with the RTC not keeping time correctly you may need two very tiny value capacitors in this location... It's just as well the diagram does not show them -- it's probably also designed with some drift in mind anyway its interesting they even placed the footprint.

Ha ... Reading further down the datasheet they include 6pF load capacitance inside the ic. So the crystal has to specify 6pf of load capacitance and 50k ohms of ESR. The footprint is likely there out of utility - for using a crystal that doesn't specify 6pf you can increase the capacitance by using the pads.

So for example.. most modern 32khz Crystals in this form factor are about 16pf. You'd have to do the math and then add caps that would equal out to the total capacitance with the internal caps.
