In this guide, we will explore how to interface a Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor with Arduino using the RS485 protocol. This setup will allow us to monitor the moisture content and temperature of the soil, which are crucial parameters for agriculture and gardening.
Soil moisture sensors measure the volumetric water content in soil. By understanding the moisture levels, farmers and gardeners can make informed decisions about irrigation, ensuring optimal plant growth. The temperature of the soil also plays a significant role in plant health, affecting root growth and nutrient uptake.
For this project, we will utilize the Renkeer Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensor, which is specifically designed for in-ground measurements. This sensor can measure soil moisture levels ranging from 0% to 100% and soil temperature from -40°C to 60°C with impressive accuracy. Its low power consumption makes it ideal for remote locations, powered by solar panels or batteries. Earlier, we used Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensors and also Resistive Soil Moisture Sensors, but they are not industrial-graded.
Therefore we are using Industrial Grade Soil Sensor for this project. To interface the sensor with the Arduino, we will use the RS485 communication protocol. The data from the Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensor will be presented on an OLED screen connected to the Arduino.

Excellent information given by how2eletronics
Hi it is very usefull video thanks. Now i am trying to use do sensor with arduino. Sensor's output Rs485. Onfortunately data isnt clear some kind of symbols. How i can solve it
Another amazing video 👏 thanks for making this video 🎉🎉
Thank you for nice tutorials. Gracias.
Please make video on corn and wheat moisture...
Is it possible to get the soil ec with that sensor?
I have made circuit and program according this but it doesn't work.. How to solve this problem. Pls help
Awesome project 👌
Clear, detailed guide.
Awesome video 🎉
Please make video on grain moisture..please please
value is varying in every second , how to solve it...
hello where can we find the source program
how much energy does it take for operation???....it would be interesting to expand it with a small photovoltaic panel and two 18650 lithium batteries
