I present to you RRPG's Final Fantasy Retrospective!
This episode talks about the history of Yasumi Matsuno and his accomplishments with bringing about the grand history and eclectic, rich world he would conceive with Hiroyuki Ito called "Ivalice". Starting off as a spin-off with Final Fantasy Tactics, Ivalice grew into something bigger as more games were being made that centered around that mythology; including what would eventually be conceived as the twelfth, mainline installment to the Final Fantasy franchise. However, it's existence would mark it as a polarizing entry where a vast majority love it while another vast majority would find it to be boring, but its success would lead it into a new media empire with games set in that world. We talk about those games while also exploring the details of a cancelled game set in that world, discover the actual chronology of Ivalice's timeline, and look back in retrospect with what Yasumi Matsuno and his creation managed to accomplish for Square Enix while also expressing what must be done for there to be more games based on that universe. Sit back, relax, and be prepared for a lesson about Ivalice because Episode 9 of RRPG's Final Fantasy Retrospective is now live!
Please rate this video as well as leaving your feedback in the comments!
Hope you enjoy this episode and thanks for watching!

Wow. I know you put a lot of work into this as I was there while you were capturing gameplay and editing the video but I'm still blown away by the finished product. I like that you went through this with an even hand. You are definitely a fan but you brought up the positives and the negatives of the games and that's cool. This one is just how I am but I actually found learning about the games development more fascinating than the games plots. You did fantastic breaking down both though. That's just a reflection of my interests being more in game development. I love that you took the time to try and explain the games timeline. Plus, I really love the beginning and learning the origin of Tactics Ogre and how it later influenced Final Fantasy Tactics.

I just watched the entire series over the course of a few days. As someone yearning for a quality retrospective of the entire series made from a single perspective, as well as getting information about what each game meant to the general population, this is a treasure! I knew very little about the series outside of reviews for generally the more popular 3D ones, and few of them as comprehensive. I am so excited to see your next entry!

Goodness me, this was the most indepth, informative, and well balanced explanation of Ivalice I have ever seen. As an enormous fan (as if my username doesn't give it away) this entire video pleased me greatly. I have a couple of quibbles with some slightly incorrect plot points, but aside from those it was a marvelous experience. I was wondering if that map of Ivalice you continued to flash on the screen at points was official or not. I did not know there were any official maps of Romanda and Ordallia. Not just that, but the endless amount of concept art were things I had never even seen before, such as a full picture of St. Ajora and the various maps and the like. Also the quote you mention from Matsuno in 2010 is strange as that very same year he worked with SE in bringing a truly updated and incredible remaster of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. He also, just a couple of weeks ago, said that he wants to work on a new FFT as he feels time is slipping away from him and he wants to please the fans, if only just one more time. Fortress is a sad story, I am not sure what could have been done with that, but it seemed a little flawed to begin with. I wonder if maybe Square should have reached out to a more experienced Western studio instead of a relative unknown. I was pleased by those sales numbers, except on FFTA2 which I feel is an improvement on FFTA in almost every way. FFXII is now available on every modern console and I do hope it does well on the Switch.

When it comes to the maps of Ivalice, they were official ones that point out to the specific games that they covered. As far as finding an actual map of the entirety of Ivalice, that was really hard to locate as I had to find the correct one that would correspond to how the games would actually portray that world. That was a real toughie to go through as Square Enix has not even released an official map that covers all of the countries and continents within Ivalice. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the ones like the unofficial map that covers all of that world was how Ivalice is supposed to be. Thanks for your continued support. By watching your videos and leaving feedback (both positive praise and constructive criticism), you're supporting me. Hope you look forward to Episode 10 that covers the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and Final Fantasy Type-0!

@@RRPGReviews It has long been speculated that the Rozarria Empire eventually became the Kingdom of Lesalia (loss of land and influence, explaining still how one family line controls three separate kingdoms) so that is not too far off the mark. All in all, its a curious case all the same. I rather like FF Type-0 with its interesting storyline, mission structure, and fairly large cast of playable characters, so learning more about that sounds like fun.

The wait for Part 10 is going to kill me even now. Watching all of this, I feel bad for the company that tried to do an FF12 spinoff but couldn't cause Square-Enix were idiotic. They are around, just reborn under a new name and yeah... the bitterness still remains.

  • @RRPGReviews

I'm working on Episode 10 at this time, but it will be truly worth the wait like every episode I work on. :) On a serious note, it does suck about what happened with GRIN, even though they are still alive now under the name Overkill Software. It would have been nice for a Western developer to try their hand on a Final Fantasy game (either mainline or spinoff) for once, but Square Enix being too safe with just developing those games over in their home country is obviously going to hurt them for being too complacent, in the future. However, the stuff that happens from behind the scenes that either works or does not is just what business is. It sucks, but at the same time, it doesn't mean that a company is considered incompetent when they were willing to try, firsthand. Maybe one day we'll see a different take for Final Fantasy done by a Western developer if it isn't GRIN or Eidos Montreal. There are so many possibilities that have potential.

Back when Vagrant Story released I had no idea that it was essentially a spin off of Final Fantasy. That was mainly because I didn't play the Final Fantasy Tactics games so the the first time I heard about the world of Ivalice was Final Fantasy XII. I did play a bit of Vagrant Story but couldn't get into it which is why the only time I had heard of the world of Ivalice being Final Fantasy XII. I honestly didn't like Final Fantasy XII at all. I know a lot of fans love the game but for me it just didn't click. I think the reason was because the first game in which the turned based combat was changed and for that reason I never really gave it much of a chance.

I said that Ultima Online was one of those games that Matsuno played immensely and possibly still does to this day, but I never said that it was one of those games that immediately inspired him to go into the video game industry. I said that playing video games in general was what made him want to become a game designer in the first place. Ultima Online definitely had influence within Matsuno's later work after it came out, but that doesn't mean a game which released 8 years after immediately going into the gaming industry was what inspired him to go into it, right away. That doesn't make any sense. Even as a game designer, Matsuno still plays video games outside of his work. Same thing goes for other big people like Hideki Kamiya from PlatinumGames and Masahiro Sakurai from Sora Ltd. There are games they enjoyed which made them want to become a game designer in the first place, but there are games that came out during their careers that they take inspiration from for their later works. Don't know where you thought I said a game that came out 8 years after joining Quest Corporation would want Matsuno to go into making video games after its launch, but I never said that. Unfortunately, your thought stands as incorrect.

That's the thing. When the game came out, there was no way to exactly know if it would be considered part of the Ivalice Universe. Also, I would say that Sydney Losstarot being the Cid of that game is a bit of a wide stretch. When it comes to the character Cid, he has to be someone who has a strong zest for airships, machinery, engineering, etc. That's been very prevalent in almost all Final Fantasy games to this day, and Sydney Losstarot doesn't fit into that category, in my opinion.

Final Fantasy has 12 letters. Final Fantasy XII has it all. Final Fantasy XII is the best FF of all time, and the last great game Square-Enix has ever released (since they never had the resources or interest to recreate Vagrant Story nor had the courage to fund a proper sequel). Like all of Matsuno's works, it's not for everyone, so sadly not many people will come to this realization. Which is great, by the way. Better to create an enduring masterpiece for a few and remastering it for posterity than a bland pandering fashion product for the masses to please investors (i.e.: everything Square Enix released after XII, which won't stand the test of time like XII will).

By far the best game in Final Fantasy series... But not the best Final Fantasy in the series. 6, 7 and 9 fight for that title, I'd side with 9. Still, sad how much developers struggled with this masterpiece.

6 minutes in, this is a rapid fire list of facts, with no no time to digest any of it. Skip

If I digested every single thing, then we would look at maybe 2x or 3x the length of this video, and I do not do that for these retrospective videos. It's just straight to the point with the list of facts.

@RRPGReviews I get that these videos require a lot of work, all the more reason to add something meaningful to the conversation on the subject, what do I want an hour of facts for for when I searched "retrospective" for deep analysis of gameplay and story.

Hmmm 20 minutes in and nothing about final fantasy 12. I'm learning a lot about final fantasy tactics but that's not why I clicked on your video, just saying

You will get to Final Fantasy XII, shortly. Don't always assume that every video covering a Final Fantasy game starts with me talking about a mainline entry. Besides, I talk about Final Fantasy XII a lot more than I do about Final Fantasy Tactics or any of the other games part of the Ivalice Alliance.

For me, starting the video with the other games that featured Ivalice first, and how the devs came up with it come FFXII made it much more interesting. If I wanted to just learn about FFXII only, I would look for other videos exclusively about FFXII and not watch one with "Ivalice" in it. Just saying.

It's such a shame we never got FF12 Fortress. Seeing games these days, I think it could be well received now.
