RR Diamonds Of Danville, Illinois & Train Knocks Down Signal, CSX & Norfolk Southern Trains
Ойын-сауық
Railroad Diamonds Of CSX & Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing Each Other In Danville, Illinois. Norfolk Southern Train Knocks Down The Signal, Railroad Jargon For Signal Dropping To Red. Flange Greaser Next To The Road And Auto Racks Cars That Are The Size Of Apartment Buildings. These trains are in downtown Danville, Illinois just west of the Indiana border in Midwest America!
Trains with DPUs and 5 trains total.
Thanks to the local railfans for showing me the area. I never knew this existed and I have driven by on the nearby interstate several times. It's a nice small town with plenty of trains from both CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroad. Count the cars on the last train. That was a monster! Let me know what you came up with.
Filmed Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

At the beginning, that double track main was once the Wabash main line from Detroit to Kansas City. The single line was the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, which carried the most direct train from Chicago to Miami, the Dixie Flagler/Dixie Flyer, back in the day. That's a route Amtrak should revive.

I have family in Danville. One family member has the trains timed coming through town, and he knows how to get around them. No, he's not a train fan. Next time you go to Illinois, you have to visit Decatur. NS and CN cross each other at a diamond. NS has a massive flat bowl yard there. Also Watco's Decatur Eastern and Illinois has a small yard adjacent to NS. Love watching your videos J.T
Mixed freight is my favorite as well. It’s very interesting to see such a variety of wagons!

I used to live in Danville, it's a tough old town. GM had a foundry plant on the south side of town but it closed in the mid 90s. The train action in Danville is pretty good with both NS and CSX having main lines that come through town. CSX runs up to Chicago and NS is the old Wabash main from Detroit to Kansas City so you'll see several trains with auto parts on them.

Great job JT !! I live in Paris, IL (about an hour south of Danville on US 150/IL Rt 1). Don't see a lot of railroad action anymore but do see some. A regional railroad (Decatur & Eastern Illinois Railroad) serves our town and run mostly grain and soybeans between Terre Haute, IN & Decatur, IL that also have connecting tracks that run between Hume, Brocton, Oakland, Charleston & Sigel (all Illinois cities) where it intersects with Candian National tracks at Sigel that go north/south that run between Chicago & New Orleans (freight & Amtrak).

Hi Jawtooth, I'm glad to see you up in east central Illinois. I have family in edgar and Douglas counties. You wouldn't believe the amount of trackage that has disappeared from the area. Conrail had a line that ran east to west , Milwaukee road had a route that went to the coalfields in Indiana, and the old Egyptian line ran north to south. Decatur IL is another great railfanning town. The old Wabash station is a favorite of mine. Stay safe

This railroad diamond proved to be a good railfanning location for you on 2 July 2o24, Jaw Tooth! We see numerous Norfolk Southern and CSX trains in this video. I did some research on the history of the two rail lines that cross at this diamond. The CSX acquired the line when they merged with the Family Lines System. The Family Lines System gained access to the line when Seaboard Coast Lines and the Louisville & Nashville and other railroads formed the Family Lines System. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad acquired the trackage when the Chicago & Illinois Eastern Railroad was sold to the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the L&N. The Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad ran from Chicago, Illinois south to Woodland, Illinois where it split into two lines. One line went in a southwesterly direction to St. Louis, Missouri (the MoPac portion) and a southeasterly direction through Danville, Illinois to Terre Haute, Indiana (the L&N portion). North of Woodland, Illinois the two lines join and both the Missouri Pacific and the L&N head north to Chicago. Union Pacific merged with Missouri Pacific. North of Woodland, Illinois the trackage is referred to as the Joint Line and in 2024 both Union Pacific and CSX trains are seen on the Joint Line. Norfolk Southern acquired their trackage over the diamond when Norfolk & Western acquired the Wabash Railroad. (Posted 11 July 2024 at 1738 CDT.)

Thanks for the info and for watching Thomas!
my guess on the abandoned homes is that owners couldn't resell them as the noise fro the bust diamonds. Railroad needs to install the 'raised flange' diamond that you showed in another video. the 'greasing flange' setup was interesting. my guess is greases the outer rail for the sharp curve to deuce wear? probably triggered to go off from the weight of the car? either way, very interesting, thanks1

Jaw Tooth - Wish I could say this in a different way, but - thank you for another fabulous video!! Several times previously I have said I am really impressed at how you "talk to us" as if we're there railfanning with you. A perfect example of what I mean starts in this video at 19:30. That type of interaction with the camera is what puts the bar high and challenges others to aspire to. So glad you do these videos. I get thousands of ideas for scenery possibilities on my model by watching your videos, and I have learned a lot of neat history and trivia about several locations, all thanks to the one and only JAW TOOTH!!!! A little "By The Way" thing here: When you had to shoot into the sun - it was still good video.
