ROYAL TOUR 'MALTA TO GIBRALTAR'

(13 May 1954) During their stay at Malta, the Queen and the Duke went out by royal barge to visit HMS "Eagle". In the afternoon of that day, the Queen came to watch the Duke play polo for the Royal Navy. On to Gibraltar, where a tremendous welcome awaited the royal travellers. Her Majesty was presented with the huge bunch of keys, the original keys of the fortress, which were offered by the Governor, General Sir Gordon MacMillan. An important engagement of the first day was a combined services parade on the airfield. The real highlight of the stay in Gibraltar - so far as the Royal children were concerned, at any rate - was the visit to the famous Barbary Apes.
