Oh Yeah! Why not, right!!! This stage of Led Zeppelin is so good, a very raw hungry sounding band.

You have to understand the conditions under which CODA was made. Bonzo died, the band dissolved, but Atlantic records said they owed an album. Jimmy did the best he could to dig out some material, but there wasn't much left. Robert and Jonesy came back to add a few bits that were necessary and that was the end. I'm sure that given the circumstances, Jimmy could be forgiven for altering these to make them sound like "new" studio cuts to fit the parameters of the album and be done with their Atlantic obligations. Yes, Jimmy did do a bit of editing, and the RAH version does sound more full on both. I love how even during this raw, early stage, their musical power is evident and they sound utterly gigantic live.

Well said, Henrietta. I came back to add a comment about the conditions under which Coda was developed but no need to now. You know I have a soft spot for Coda just because of those conditions. Had to be difficult for the guys. :)

@@jmar7631 I agree. In a strange way, Jimmy came full circle. The end of The Yardbirds came with tour dates still owed and only Jimmy left to pick up the pieces and finish it. Hence the use of The New Yardbirds as Zep's name so he could finish the dates. Then the heartbreaking end of Zep with an album owed and primarily Jimmy left to pick up the pieces and finish. *sigh* So much sadness.

My only question would be. Zeppelin was not affiliated with Atlantic records since Houses of the Holy. They started their own label Swan Song. So what is the obligation to Aylantic to release 1 more album ?

@@josephlinnell9855 the Swan Song label was Zep's, however, Atlantic didn't want to completely lose Zeppelin, so they worked out a deal with Peter Grant for the distribution rights. Basically, their Swan Song releases were financed and distributed by Atlantic while Zep retained control over design, content, and the rest. In addition, Swan Song wanted to sign new acts to the label. According to Peter Grant's biography, Zep was supposedly interested in starting their own label as early as the 2nd album due to Atlantic messing up some early pressings of that album. Also, according to the book, Atlantic had just renewed this deal not long before Bonzo's passing, therefore Atlantic was expecting *something* so Atlantic paid an advance on condition that if they couldn't produce anything, the advance would be refunded and CODA came to be. Unknown to the others, Jimmy had a recording he'd done of Bonzo that would become Bonzo's Montreux. Jimmy and Bonzo often practiced and jammed together to work out riffs, time signatures, etc. All of that hard work would ensure Bonzo could flip flop and follow Jimmy's guitar just as easily as the bass.

Yeah I prefer the live version of this song. But this whole concert just rocks OMG

I have the entire Royal Albert Hall show, soundboard recording, on CD. One of the best of Zep's live shows from their entire career. Highly recommend the two Eddie Cochran songs from this show, Come On Everybody and Something Else.

I've been listening to them since I was a teen in the 70's and they just seem to sound even better now. Whilst their studio work is incredible with much overdubbing, their live work is another level of excellence, so raw and pure!

Jimmy liked imperfections as well, that's why he left Bonham's squeaky bass drum pedal in one of their songs.

Plant sang like this from start to finish every concert during this time. His voice was pristine. No one could top his bluesy and powerful voice.

Yeah sucks it only lasted a year/18 months. Although I love his 70-72 voice too., The rasp of 73/75 The clarity and power of 77. Ever changing

Agree that the live performance sounds much better, fuller. The entire concert is excellent from start to finish. One of my favorites. Thanks for a great reaction. Edit: Enjoyed your comparison of the live versions to the Coda versions. Good stuff, that.

I always agree with that statement because Led Zeppelin was a "live" band and improvisation is what drives a band into the studio.

Live....Led Zeppelin was amazing far beyond any concert you would ever see in your lifetime. The sheer power was mind boggling and brilliantly played.

I could listen to them Live everyday for 1000 years straight and NEVER get tired. These guys are BETTER LIVE. THEY ARE AN IMPROV BAND PAGE SAID WE SET OUT TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW EVERYTIME WE PLAYED LIVE. CHECK OUT THEIR 73' MSG Dazed n Confused 28 minutes

It is said that Jimmy Page's mother bought or knit him that jumper (the one with the diamond shapes) for his birthday and he wore it for that performance. You can tell that they hadn't yet reaped the full rewards of their work from the clothes they are wearing. They're dressed more like students.

Bonham was such a beast!

This is the one where Page goes into space on the bow in Dazed. I mean watch that bit after Plant says be on my side and I'll be on yours the usual live shenanigans, then he steps over and just blows up, anyone that want's to know what pure musical art looks like should watch this, there are very few examples on video.

Live is different because they are performers and the energy multiplies live. You can tell they love playing for people.

I saw Led Zeppelin perform this song in concert in 1969. They were electrifying in concert

Zep RAH rocks on both, but esp ICQYB....phenomenal & monumental imo...

"Auditory caffeine!" Love that phrase you coined ,Dev. You are so hip. : ) I liked and heard the second Groove song before. It has less guitar, you can tell. Check out an album audio here on The Tube called " We're in the Promised Land " Live! by Zeppelin.Never heard it before but gonna check it next. They are soundboard recordings from Orlando and Toronto during 1971 tour. Fantastic and much adlibbing.

Studio version sounds like Sl Kooper, of "Blood, Sweet and Tears. Blues and swing. Bonham up to the task!

Dev and Mike..Love your reviews. I believe the dynamic duo ( Pagey & Robert) are putting together a final release of unseen footage and vault songs for a release in the near future. I guess they have a lot of goodies to rummage through. Also, Jimmy is THE greatest rhythum/lead guitarist ever!!! Peace & Love.

What’s your source on that? Not challenging you, just curious because I would REALLY like that to be true….but I don’t see it happening…..There WAS a documentary that was previewed about a year ago at the Venice Film Festival called Becoming Zeppelin …about the roots of Zeppelin music, but a release date has not been announced……problems with finding a distributor I’ve read. Bummer.

I bought CODA the moment it was released. I was under the impression at that time that CODA was an album of unreleased Zeppelin songs. But couldn't figure out why "I can't Quit you Babe" was on it . Because it was definitely on Zep I. I know there was some information/ credits on the back identifying the song was recorded live at the Albert Hall. I hadn't had that album in over 3 decades so I can't quite remember what it said about "were gonna grove" That song became my favorite from the CODA album.? And you talk about CODA as a compilation Album. Well maybe so. But given the circumstances of Bonham's untimely death just after the release of ITTOD . The public were screaming for more Zeppelin and were still hoping for a change of heart by getting yhe band back together with another drummer. Even though Plant and Page made it clear that it wasn't going to happen. So I thought Jimmy went to grabbing anything they had on tape. To give the people what they want and to cash in once more on the Zeppelin name.

Also ..1970 Royal Albert Hall How Many More Times Live. 24 minutes. Best ever version of that song

'Coda' was an album of leftover tracks that didn't make it onto their mainstream albums. I'm very surprised at that as this was one of their best tracks ever

Poor Jimmy having to fulfill the coda obligation under the circumstances....that's tough 😓

In a lot of ways this was a better show than TSRTS because it's got more fluid footage.

I prefer the second one too, it sounds more natural and the bass is far more pronounced. Really enjoy your LZ reactions, thank you.

I agree on both counts that the raw, live recording is superior. The solos are much more intense in both cases. But I think that Page had other factors to take into account in his CODA editing decisions.

Also love JPJ's bass on this. btw, Animal from the Muppets was based on Bonzo, I believe.

You are wrong about Page editing the live version to make it sound like studio on Coda. The Coda version was recorded in studio at the start of their career and played live but never released the studio version until Coda.

wait, do that again @11:30. I Can't Quite you Baby is what put Heavy on the map. It's hard to imagine but watching this is more revealing than TSRTS because by then they were settled in. Not here. BTW I think "Animal" from Sesame Street was based on John Bonham.

He also smoked a lot back in the day n go on stage n rip it up

You are trying to compare different videos to a recording which back then they the band would record the sound they didn’t video it was on film so they always trying to link it up to the recording of different shots your watching someone’s hatchet job of splicing together two different camera’s.

I hope you guys eventually do Zzz tops 4:27 minute studio version of " just got paid " . The guitar solo version rocks on for quite a while and I'd like to see the Stoic pretty one's reaction .
