January 5th 2022 ~ YRK has just arrived back to the colony and to OGK at 14:43!!! ♥ This morning, OGK was hydrated with 600ml water with vitrate (a non-antibiotic supportive treatment for dehydration). Theo held and Chris McCormack from the Royal Albatross Centre gave the fluids via a tube. As you can seen this is a 2 person task. OGK struggles as he is a wild bird. But he gets back on the dummy egg after a shake on release because he is loyal to his mate and nest. This is day 15 for OGK on the nest. He is still incubating the dummy egg that he received on day 13. The natal egg is in the incubator along with 2 others who have long changeover times at their nests. The weather has been warm and New Zealand is experiencing a marine heatwave currently. We also have several other nests approaching the 13 day mark for changeover time. Foraging changes for some of the breeding birds may be tough if food stocks are not where they expect.

Oh God!! What a remarkable example of loyalty and love OGK is!!!! Sitting on the nest fulfilling his incubate duties for 15 days, facing the scorching heat of the sun, strong winds, rain. Dehydrated, hungry, waiting for his mate to come home and take her turn to incubate the egg and then care for himself. This is deeply moving. OGK is an exceptional parent and mate. OGK is a very impressive Dad with how well he handles being 'handled' by humans! He needed fluids after all this time and the Rangers knew it was best to take care of him and they did a fantastic job as always. The best news is that YRK finally came home! I am happy that YRK returned since I was getting worried for her. Thankfully the rangers are keeping their eyes on all of the albies so that they will get any assistance they need.

Hi dear Lady Hawk! Popped back to January to have a look at this video and admire OGK's plumage pattern of speckled black-and-white feathers. I wanted to remember his distinctive markings and compare them with QT's. What a handsome male he is! ✨✨💖✨✨

That was so interesting to watch! I noticed that OGK was feisty before and after the feeding but calm during it. I'll bet those cool fluids going down his throat felt so nice and refreshing, especially if he was getting dehydrated. Then afterwards, OGK seemed to have a boost of energy, doing some gardening. It's also interesting that albies don't roll the egg like eagles do ~ I guess they don't worry about the growing chick sticking to the inside of the shell! Now I'm beyond happy that YRK has returned.

This demonstrates how dedicated the Ranger squad is on Taioroa Head!! They've been monitoring all 25 chicks in conjunction with the ongoing health of the parents as well! BRAVO DOC Rangers! *I had wondered if OGK was physically healthy enough minus food /fluids for all of 15 days?? I'm sure he was weak... Dedicated, but overwhelmingly weak😔 We never know when the parent Albies leave TH if they're finding adequate food resources for not only themselves, but for their precious offspring?! So many reasons why Conservation of our royal albatross is so imperative ✨

Hi Kathleen Mccaffery - The rangers do an amazing job with the parents and the chicks each season! The parents are used to sitting on the nest for extended periods of time - the rangers keep a close eye on which parent is on the nest and how long they are on the nest and then give fluids to help them stay hydrated so they do not abandon their egg to get nourishment. I remember in 2020 OGK stayed on the egg for 3 weeks so he is one very dedicated Dad! And with the warm weather and climate change affecting fishing and food sources, the albies may have to forage longer and go to different spots to feed themselves and their soon to be hatched chick! ♥

Wow. I understand the fluids, but I’m unclear why a dummy egg is needed? With a long change over, the parent seems to remain on egg. Thanks for info. I’m so impressed and appreciative for the care given. Wow!

After 13 days on the nest, the real egg is moved to an incubator for safe keeping. This is in case the parent abandons the nest due to hunger. In the wild either the parent dies of starvation or abandons the nest. The dummy egg keeps it on the nest.

I believe the rangers placed the egg in an incubator in case the adult decides it must abandon the egg and fly to sea in order to survive.

They can go up to two weeks without fluids. Because of the heat and extended time on the nest, the parent is given fluids on day 13, and food on day 15, and then every two days thereafter. This is for the welfare of the parent and to keep it on the nest.

O boy! Bit stresful. What might would happen to the bird if he stayed another 2 days without supply/swapping ?

i love albatri they are so nice. isnt it possible just to feed the birbs as they sit on the nest, offer them fishs or smth?

I don't understand "dummy egg." Why are they not incubating the egg themselves? I am not familiar with this bird.

OGK was on the nest for 15 days without food or water, waiting for his mate to return and take over, if OGK was forced to abandon the egg in order to survive the rangers wanted to make sure the egg was safe. The real egg was returned when his mate returned the next day 🙂

L H-- 99 % of the time--The Best Solution to a Problem is a Simple Solution--I'm wondering ,as another Comment suggested--Why Not Put a 600 ml Bowl with Elect. Sol in it along with a Squid floating in the Mix out next to OGK.--Or as you are Frequently Referring--Grind the Squid up in a Blender into a " Squid Smoothie " and pour that into the bowl along with the Elect. Sol. --OGK Most Decidedly did not like his Medical Treatment and being Manhandled.--Surely there must be a better way to solve this problem in the Future !

I don’t believe an Albatross would drink from a bowl, as they usually obtain fluids at sea as they are feeding. Through many years of experience, these rangers know the best way to care for this species.

I’m sure it was to keep him from being dehydrated. 15 days without water is quite a while
