Amazing. Roy is 92 now and going strong. Love him on “Out of the afternoon” with Tommy Flanagan and Roland Kirk. I’m 70 so let’s hope lm still vigorous at 92.

Roy's still going strong and playing dates now at age 93. Not many people left who played with Bird!

I’ve been listening to Roy since I was a baby. My mother was playing his music and now I can’t live without it. Roy is beyond! It’s nothing like being in a front row seat at the Blue Note listening to Roy Haynes.

I've been playing drums for many years and my style is fairly different. How these types of jazz drummers decide when to follow the band and when to play against, it's fucking amazing. This guy is so good.

The coolest drummer on the planet! So hip! He plays that flat-top ride and gets a very distinctive sound. I only got to see him live once but I will never forget it.

Like a (jazz) rock star! Man, the guy plays better than most people who are more than half his age! Excellent performance.

The thing about him, is that he makes something so intricate, and difficult, and he makes it sound so easy to do! Awesome solo. Definitely a different direction, unlike te other drum solos.

Roy Haynes should get a heck of a lot more time than 3 minutes on Letterman. The guy is a living legend but then again I guess we are lucky he got that these days. It's a shame as there should be some sort of movie made about Roy with all the people he has played with and being one of the greatest to ever play the drums.

I am a drummer and drumming instructor. How do you teach what Roy Haynes did here? The way he played with and also against the band! His magnificent feel and bounce. In his early years, Roy played mostly traditional grip, but like so many of the veterans, he switched over to matched grip. What a sensational drummer.

@ Mr. Bejerano, you said : ""Summer Nights"…standard by Harry Warren I think (not sure)" I`m sure, it IS "Summer Night" ! (..without "s"..) Lettermann mentioned your next Album "Roy-Alty" (2011). "Summer Night" is not on Roy-Alty. Milestones is on Roy-Alty, but above it`s not Milestones. But "Summer Night" is also performend by Keith Jarrett Trio, Miles Davis, Flora Purim, Shelly Manne, Chick Corea, .. a.s.o. .., ..so, M. Bejerano, you are definetly in best company !!

Such unnatural technique! Holding the sticks by their ends... Can any drummers tell me if he was self-taught? So elegantly in-the-pocket though.

That’s not the point so. It’s all a conscious decision of feel and sound. Including how he holds his sticks. And he got formal training from James ‘Reese’ Europe’s Band. That is some old school drumming.
