    Jonas Isacsson himself responded to this video under my post in the dedicated Roxette facebook fan-page, and he wrote "Good video Sergei working out the riffs. We often doubletracked the riffs to make them pop out a little more, it's not a 12-string on 'The Look', the riff is overdubbed in 3 different octaves, played on a Larrivee´ guitar."

    I'm not a guitar player, but it's great to finally hear the truth about how they got that sound. I'd love to see him or Per do a breakdown with the original recordings to isolate those parts! Thanks 😊

    Hi Sergei, Love the video! I do have to add that the engineers and producers were probably essential to creating the intricate and polished sounds on Look Sharp. Think of names like Anders Herrlin, Alar Suurna and Clarence Ofwerman. I remember reading somewhere on Facebook they did about 8 layers for 'The Look', and in the record sleeve of Look Sharp, Anders mentions them using a mix of clean and distorted guitars for 'The Look'. Also on 13:24 of this 'Look Sharp' making of (kzread.info/dash/bejne/gXtty8WoZ9itnLg.htmlsi=rDcUhUG3ykEfKZiK) you can hear the guitars without the octave on top. I think a video with the producer and engineers where they go into the technical side of making the album, would not only be amazing for Roxette fans, but to any musician, as the sounds they put on tape making that album are not only timeless, but also extraordinary for today's standards!

    @@imarkarovic976 thank you very much for the info and link! Never seen that before. I absolutely agree that sound engineers did a magic here (and in many other songs). Despite the song is great by itself, I never heard that Roxette sounded close to recording on concerts with this songs. It suggested me that there should be some magic done during recording.

    Thanks for the video! As a fellow die hard Roxette fan I think you nailed it with most of the riffs! Jonas Issacson at the time he joined Roxette was considered one of the best guitar players in Sweden. For example, when Europe were looking for a new guitar player he was a top candidate. That intro riff for The Look, the song that broke them through in USA even before the single was released there, is his creation and for that part, in my humble opinion, Jonas is massively responsible for the international success that Roxette has achieved. After 2001 he was playing on and off with Roxette as Christoffer Lundquist of Brainpool, who initially joined the band as a bass player, eventually took over the lead guitar role. There's no doubt that Cristoffer is great musician and I enjoy what he does with Roxette but I think the songs recorded without Jonas did lose a lot once his ingenious guitar work was no longer there. They had another great guitarist, Mickael "Nord" Andersson, who joined them for Crash! Boom! Bang! Tour. I do recommend to check Live in Johanessburg 1995 show, that was officially released, or Live in Moscow 1995, that was televised in the country. They are both freely available on KZread. If you like what Jonas did, you will definitely enjoy what Nord brought to Roxette's live performance, as he added that full-throttle-devil-may-care-proper-rock'n-roll component, that took these songs to the whole new dimension. You would be surprised to see another guitarist playing leads on the same stage with Jonas, but it did actually work very well! After watching these shows, you will change your opinion as you will see that Roxette were in fact quite cool live rock band! Anyways, thanks again for the video, it made my day!

    Thanks a lot! Didn't know about Nord! Will certainly check those live shows! I only heard few live versions of Roxette songs and noticed as well that live version is more rock tnan records. What is your favorite Roxette live show to check?

  • @Dafthippie

    @Dafthippie

    Thanks, Sergey! I would say that these two are my personal favourites. I haven't watched them for a while so will have to watch again to see which one I would choose between the two, but from the memory I'd probably go for Moscow. However official Crash! Boom! Live DVD has more songs, so more fun! Like I said it is freely available on KZread. After the show in Moscow they didn't tour for six years, the next tour took place in 2001 and had a new band. I went to see them live and by that time they already had enough chart hit singles to fill the complete show so it was more pop. I know you are into electric guitar, but if you are also interested in acoustic sets, do check out their MTV Unplugged concert, again it is fully available from KZread. Jonas has completely reworked guitar parts for few songs like The Look, Hotblooded, Cry and they sound amazing in their acoustic versions. Also some brilliant piano parts from Clarence Ofwerman, their keyboard player and producer, without whose input, Per admits, they wouldn't be where they are now.

    Jonas isacsson even wrote solos for those guitarists so they could show off on stage, because he was too shy to do that himself. He talked about that on the Boxette. As good as Christoffer is both in the studio and live, Jonas is something else.
