Roxanne Shante on How 'Female Rapper' Term was Created During Her Battle (Part 2)

Ойын-сауық

Watch Part 1: goo.gl/KYSSPu
Part 3: goo.gl/W63bTb
-----------------------------
Legendary Emcee Roxanne Shante sat down with DJ Vlad to discuss the origins of her career and hip-hop in general. She discusses a time before the term "female rapper" existed when everyone was just a rapper. She also talks about the day that all changed after Kurtis Blow gave her a low rating for a battle she seemingly won.
Watch above.

Why it’s so important to understand and respect the history of not only hip-hop but whatever it is that you gravitate to. Roxanne Shante is a cornerstone of the foundation of hip-hop. She did it based entirely on skill. Not on her looks or how sexually explicitly she could make her rhymes. It was all skill and hustle.

The title of this video should be something like "Roxanne Shante on how She Battled 20 MCs in One Day and Beat them All"...and this video should get millions of views. This is real Hip Hop shit. History of the culture coming from a Legendary MC. She basically said she dominated in battles because she was going off the top which made her more versatile with her rhymes, being able to spit bars that relate directly to the moment at hand. That's so dope, and something I wish we'd see more of nowadays in rap battling. I'd love to see a rap battle league with MCs going strictly off the top. I know they have them in certain places around the world, but one in the US would be dope. Anyway, this woman is an ICON in Hip Hop culture and should be given the respect she's due. Hopefully people will show this video the love it deserves. Peace.

In one of her other interviews...she stated Kane only wrote Have A Nice Day....and that's it....reason why it happened...she was on an euro tour while the rivalry started between Juice Crew and Boogie Down Productions...KRS called her out on a song..along with entire Juice Crew...so, Kane had her "response" done when she got back to the states

You need to do yourself a favor and keep your mouth closed when you don't have facts to back up your statements. The ONLY song Kane ever wrote for her was "Have a Nice Day" as far as ANY FACTS you can pull up proof. She also explains the reason for that. Back then if a battle rapper was dissed they were expected to have a response the SAME DAY. She was out of town and didn't even know that a beef sparked or that she had been dissed. Kane wrote it for her in advance so she'd have something ready to go ASAP but she didn't lie about that. As far as her other music, she has always been known to freestyle all her songs.

Kurtis explanation for making you lose, is pure hogwash; if you won, you won, regardless of your age, plus hip-hop was a youth oriented music at the time. Kurtis was just hating, because Shante was a girl, and a 14 year old girl at that, that's why I'm glad LL Cool J, came along and took his spot.

Kurtis Blow must've been too full of himself for that explanation. How would HE know about how the industry would have reacted by Shante winning? Many BIG records were out already and movies were being made in Hip Hop! (Krush Groove, Breakin', Beat Street, Disorderlies) By her being a young girl, she could have blown the fuck up like New Edition who was out at that time! Kurtis sabotaged her and her immediate future point blank! This woman is like the Sister Rosetta Tharpe of Rap/Hip Hop!! She just as many others in other genres unfortunately become "unsung hero" that only real fans of the genre or culture know about! We shouldn't have to dig to know about these pioneers! All hail the TRUE Queen!

VERY good points. There were other hip hop legends on the panel who voted more favorably for Roxanne. Do you mean to tell me that out of all of the judges, Kurtis Blow was the only one who had the foresight to realize that a young, teenage girl winning a rap competition would have been detrimental to hip hop -- and the other judges were just too absent-minded to see this??? Hip Hop was steadily gaining momentum throughout the mid to late 80s -- a teenage girl winning a rap competition was not going to stop that. I understand where Kurtis Blow is coming from -- I just don't believe that his defense of his decision has a strong foundation.

The ONLY thing I understand about where he coming from is that he seen the push and momentum behind this movie and KNEW Shante gonna do interviews everywhere and chances are good his name will come up about that moment he screwed her over, so he made some BS story to save face public relations type shit! He is too high on himself to just apologize and say the truth! Notice Shante says he came at her recently!! Cuz the movie was buzzing! 30 years but he waits until now... SMH

So because she was young and a girl she couldn't represent Hip-Hop? Hip-Hop actually would have been better cuz she actually was about talent skill. But Kurt says its about Age n Gender. There's always been youth entertainers remember Gladys Night no body said she couldn't sing cuz she was young n girl also Stevie Wonder kid and blind. Excuses. She was the best. snaked. smh He did her the way Don did him on Soul Train hating.

Roxanne Shante is a true legend in hip hop! I used to hear her name a lot as a little kid in North Carolina along with Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie and LL Cool J all the time. She was definitely a trailblazer for MCing and Battle Rap. The whole Kurtis Blow part was kinda understandable and visonary because it would have been taken as serious as Bubble gum Pop music if a little girl was the face of an urban musical artform that was already disrespected by the music pundits at that time as a fad and/or gimmickry. I just the way Kurtis went about it was classless and weak because he could have shown a little more compassion for a young female prodigy trying to claim the crown of her respective musical genre. Nonetheless, they are both legends and I respect them for paving the way.

I remember when Rappers Delight came out. I knew that music was for me! I remember when the Roxanne battle came out & loving it. I also remember a talk show called the Dinah Shore show. Sitting on the floor in my mothers room watching it and them saying how rap was just a fad.. It wouldn’t last.. Hahahaha!!! I love hip hop!!! I wonder if this generation knew all hip hop went through, would it be any different today?
