The draftsmen that came up with all the drawings in those manuals were extremely skilled individuals. By hand. Amazing.

I agree, it's an art in it's own way. There are also hand drawn pictures of all the pcb's in most manuals, I don't mean the schematics, they actually drew the boards and where all the chips go, etc.... you probably already know that though but like you said they were Amazing.

I love the 80s AMI CD jukeboxes The digital ones, that allowed you to go online in the 90s and select what you wanted to have on the machine, that was awesome. We had a phone line, and the machine would call the company at 5am No one realized that you could create an account on the website and select from their catalog what you wanted on the machine and this was back when most people had dial-up and I went on the site and created an account and selected a couple songs and I remember having talked to the bartender the previous week about wanting quarterflash on the machine and when I came in that next week she said you won't believe it the song you wanted is now on the machine and she didn't realize that I had requested it and that the machine when it called the company downloaded over the phone line at 14 KB per second, which was as fast as the phone line would allow back then it took an hour to download one song that was I think about 5 MB. Usually it would connect for a couple hours and get two or 3 songs. Really awesome. High speed internet is great and all of the social media and everything we have now is great but back in the old days when there weren't that many people on it was a lot more professional because the people that were on the message boards and groups that existed then were there to help and learn. It's amazing to have lived when having a phone was a luxury and most people had a party line and you'd have an entire city block on one side of the street where there'd be a dozen apartments that had a phone and we all had the same phone number and I remember taking messages for my neighbors when they wouldn't be home and I would answer the phone and I remember pay phones everywhere and I remember when cell phones first came out and I remember the early days of the internet and dial up and voice over internet phone being able to dial calls anywhere for free over the internet back when during the day a call from Albany to Allentown was $3 a minute and the operators there were so many employees of the phone company in every city and the information number people calling to get a phone number for a listing or a person and with the internet all of those people lost their job because people could look up online to get a phone number and the phone company I remember when the cable company first offered voice over internet phone lines and free Nationwide calling and the landline companies like Bell and AT&T they dragged their feet but eventually they had to give everyone free unlimited calling as well So much has changed and I can't wait for the self-driving vehicles and the home robots and being able to place an order online for groceries and sending your car via your cell phone to go to the store and the robot at the store will load your car with your groceries and the car will drive itself back home and your home robot will unload your car and for people like me who are sick having a car that can drive you to the doctor when you're not well enough to drive yourself instead of having to take an ambulance or an Uber will be terrific and being able to get in the car at 8:00 at night and tell it where you need to go and have it drive 12 hours while you sleep and arrive at your destination in the morning and not have to go through the hassle of flying. It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the airlines So much is going to change

Ever run into songs by Peppermint Rainbow in the boxes? They made one album I think , late 60's, and they have better known songs, but Pink Lemonade is one that haunted me for 20+ years. Until I ran into a CD remake of their album and got it. There is quite some story to how I found what to look for in the first place. It was on my late grandad's reel-to-reel tapes that I inherited as a kid, and I copied it on a cassette too... wasn't too good with English then but the song stuck in my ear canal so that at a later time when I had learned a good deal of English I could recall the lyrics... "When I'm with you, one glass will do, of pink lemonade".

I’ve serviced many Rowe R-90s andR-91 cd/record combos They had electronic mech control boards and credit solid state boards. Most of the problems I encountered on these models were in the CD player whereby communication wast lost to the cpu logic board. Sometimes it was resoldering and cleaning the connector pins on the cpu board. Also cleaned th ICs on the cpu board. They had plug in IC sockets. The pins would tarnish in due time. Cleaned the IC pins with a standard pink rubber eraser and took care of the problem

the selector circuit board (30:40 into the video) reminds me of the board in the throttle position sensors in some older fuel-injected cars (70s and 80s). these boards have a contact arm (attached to the throttle arm) that sweeps across an arc-shaped trace on the board to signal to the engine computer the relative position of the throttle. in some of these cars, the boards become worn from the tip of the contact arm and stop working properly so they have to be replaced or repaired

I'd like to have seen the read in and read out relays you were pushing. Mines being a headache, works when it wants to. Ohmed the rows of switches and did find a dirty switch, cleaned and now it searches forever. I'm getting there, just taking time... I messed with the plug at the bottom of the circuit board and now it searches and stops, but doesn't push a pin out or do anything. Still trying to find what causes the play side to rotate and find the pin, but since the pin doesn't pop out, that's for future me. Ohmed the circuit board and wipers and they seem fine. cleaned everything.

This video is fantastic. It has helped me get my Dads old Rowe/Ami MM2 working again. Thank you! I have one issue I’m hoping you might have some insight on. If I select any top row letter and number combination it works as exactly as expected( I.e. Q0, E9, etc). The issue comes when I select the bottom letter associated with each number. Instead of playing the selection it plays the same number but advanced one letter. For example if I select P0 it will always play R0, F9 will always play H9, etc I’ve read through the manual and from what I can tell it may be centered around the search unit select coil arm assembly needing adjustment or the stop switch adjustment. Does this sound correct? Or is there another adjustment that is targeted toward the bottom letter associated with each number. Thanks again Mike

I repaired one of these Tropicanas last year. Exact same fault. Unfortunately cleaning the switch contacts didn't help on this occasion, the switches were too far gone. Ended up having to build a custom relay board to do some of the switching. The latch coil had survived, but was running hot due to a free play bodge. My fix for this is to remove the coin sorter, and mount a microswitch underneath the now-defunct coin reject button. If the credit unit is salavageable, you can just wire the switch to it to simulate a coin being dropped in. (If it has an 'add credit' button, just wire it to this.) The machine I was working on had a ruined credit unit, the previous owner had removed the subtract solenoid and other parts to make it freeplay, so instead I built a little circuit with a 555 timer IC and a relay, wired in series with the latch solenoid. Push the switch, and the latch coil energises for 40 seconds or so, long enough to make a selection before the solenoid drops out, stopping the dreaded overheating problem.

Hoping you can help me out...I have a Ami Rowe Jan which is almost identical to the one you are showing. The wires from the latch coil were disconnected due to the fact that the coil was was malfunctioning. Unfortunately they happened to touch while the unit was powered on and now the turntable is turning and no selections will register. Guessing that the power surge messed up something down stream. Would you have any idea of what damage was done and what I need to check/replace?

This is a perfect project to use a light bulb current limiter. Protects the tube amp from too much current on power up and allows the power filter caps a little time to reform, if they don’t blow up. If the bulb doesn’t get real bright then it’s not pulling too much current and things are probably OK. 😉

i suppose that latch coil burned out because it's meant to only turn on for a few seconds (after you insert a coin, before a song is selected) but they'd hacked the machine into a kind of "free play" mode which meant it was energized constantly?

I always wonder what cause the death of the jukebox around the late 80's/early 90's? in the 70's, they were every where. When the 80's came around, they all ended up in the bars and when the 90's came around, they all disappeared. I know it had nothing to do with the internet or music downloading because jukeboxes were long dead and buried before the internet came around. And speaking of the internet and jukeboxes. There was this one company that made a internet based jukebox called "touch tunes" and the fact that you now had a jukebox that had access to a much bigger library of music was really cool. Unfortunately, It was too little, too late. There were a couple of these install at 2 local bars in town and nobody used them and within 3 months, they were removed.

Sometimes the serial number makes a difference because they make changes during the run of the series. Same model number will have 2 or 3 different parts inside. Good companies will put a letter , so like ver 1a, 1b, 1c That tells the difference between the three
