The problem with this recording isn't that Rowan Atkinson is bad vocally. He's great. It's that he's such a physically comic genius, we don't get to see how good he actually is in this recording.

I agree, I feel like a lot of these comments are comparing him to Ron Moody but only basing it on the vocals, whereas - like you said - Rowan Atkinson uses a lot more physicality to create jokes. I’d love to have seen what he was doing physically whilst performing this!

I agree with lots of these comments, Rowan Atkinson is a national treasure, if his entire life's work consisted of Blackadder and Mr Bean that would make him a genius, but his other performances and stand up work are also great. However Ron Moody set the bar soooo high with this role, no one will ever live up to him and Atkinson falls very short.

Are we comparing this to Ron Moody's film performance or his stage performance. If its the film version, Moody had the benefit of mutliple takes if all went wrong. Rowan Atkinson here was performing on stage to a live audience.

You can hear him trying to avoid all the same cadences as Moody, but the result is clunky/unmusical/somewhat schizophrenic. It doesnt flow or swing like it should. But I suspect that he fell back on a lot of slap-stick which made it a good visual performance at least.

It's easier to be unsurpassed when you have unlimited takes, first on camera and then in dialogue replacement in post production. Doing the same thing on stage several nights in a row as well as the entire show besides is another kind of feat entirely.

A performer should never replicate another performers performance... it would have been bad taste and show off a severe lack of imagination, creativity, intelligence and professionalism if he’d just copied. He’s doing his own interpretation, and the audience laugh during and clap rather loudly, so he’s done his job, people were entertained.

Yes indeed, that famous Boublil & Schönberg musical. There are many parallels between Oliver and Les Mis. Cameron Mackintosh speaks of how the Dodger inspired the character of Gavroche. Also, one can imagine how the songs of Thenadier were inspired by Fagin's songs.
