Roval Terra: ONE Wheel for ALL Roads

"Road light, off-road tough, smooth as butter. Terra wheels bring leading-edge performance to the diverse needs of mixed-terrain rides. Durability is a must, since nothing sucks more than breaking down miles from the nearest paved road. Lightweight is key, so we didn’t stop until we made the lightest wheels in their class. Ride quality is critical, so we engineered each wheel as an integrated system to optimize both confident handling and a comfortable ride. Because versatility is the name of the mixed-terrain game, Terra wheels are compatible with the widest range of tires to match any terrain imaginable." - rovalcomponent...
In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew demonstrates the versatility of Roval's Terra C and CLX wheelsets. What does this mean? Roval / Specialized supplied JOM with four different pairs of tyres to ride these wheels with over pavement, gravel, and some pretty dodgy terrain; Rhombus Pro 700c x 42mm, Pathfinder Pro 700c x 38mm, Tracer Pro 700c x 33mm, and Turbo RapidAir in 700c x 30mm. All tyres are tubeless, sealant provided by Specialized.
Terra CLX:
One Wheel to Rule All Roads
"Terra CLX offers everything you need to ride any road. They’re the lightest gravel wheels on the market with 25mm internal-width rims, deliver a durable and exceptionally smooth ride, are compatible with 28-47c tires with up to 90 PSI, and they come with a lifetime warranty and no-fault crash replacement."
"Because versatility is king for all-road performance, we engineered the 25mm internal-width CLX rims to handle tires ranging from 28c to 47c wide, with up to 90 PSI on the 28c rubber. The ability to run a wide range of tire widths as well as a broad swath of pressures allows unparalleled versatility. To ensure both high and low-pressure performance, we relied on hook-bead rims."
Terra C:
Unlimited Potential For Adventure
"Taking the notion of flagship performance and workhorse dependability one step further, and easier on the wallet, meet Terra C. Sharing the same hub and spoke architecture as the Terra CL, but paired with an entirely new rim layup. The rims on the Terra C are crafted using Resin Transfer Molding; maximizing strength and material performance. Matching the internal and external spec of both the Terra CLX and CL, with only a slight weight penalty coming in at just over 1600 grams. The end result is an incredibly tough set of wheels ready for the rough stuff."
Roval Terra C wheels also feature hooked rims.

Thanks for the info JOM. I have the Pathfinder Pro tires on my bike currently. Fast rolling for most conditions and no punctures. Might consider looking at Roval next time I upgrade wheels.

I have a set of the Terra C’s. These are great wheels for the money! I have Pirelli cinturado gravel H tires mounted to them. The weight is reasonable and this combination is fast and versatile as long as the trail doesn’t get too chunky. Upon servicing the free hub on DT Swiss 370 hubs, I discovered that they had the star ratchet system in 18 points of engagement which can be easily upgraded to the 54 points of engagement. This will happen down the road at some point!

Did your hub start squeaking? I’ve had 3 different sets of Terra C wheel sets with hub failure.

@@stabizzle6026 it did start to squeak. At first I thought it was derailleur pulleys. It turned out to be the inboard bearing of the freehub body. Of all the bearing in the hub it’s really the most exposed. It has no real dust cover so it’s the easiest contaminated. I’ve seen them fail before on DT Swiss hubs. I did discover that this hub uses a star ratchet system as opposed to a 2 or 3 pawl system. The star ratchet is an upgrade.

Aeolus Pro 3V TLR got straight pull spokes, 108 engagements (compared to 18 on the Roval), no weight limit, limitless warranty, at similar weight and the same price as the Terra C, at least where I live. Not sure how how the Roval can compete here. The only thing I prefer on the Roval is 30 mm outer width, which is the sweetspot for mixed tire use in my opinion. My GP5000 28's reach 31.5 mm on the Aeolus (32 mm outer width), which is fairly wide but still great for endurance though.

My opinion as BAP 3V owner for a year and a half and a few thousand km: They really aren't strong enough for my gravel riding. They have been out of true after a single 165km race and the front bearings have seen better days. Worse, freehub is so noisy it's a constant pain, and I often find my self pedaling to get some quite. Have tried to mitigate by taking out 3of the pawls (=less engagements) but doesn't help much. And the tubeless band in them adds 150g pr wheel, which is not incl in official weight. I have taped mine instead but the seating is a bit of a pain. They are fast, I like the profile and width, and I got them at a good price, but I am not a fan. Looking at selling to get a set of Roval Terras. I know the hubs and tubeless system is superior at least (have a set of CL50s).

@@trykpaa Interesting to hear! Just checked mine. Front wheel is about 0.5 mm out of true, after about 2000 km on them including a 1000 km bikepacking trip with heavy offroad passages, about 90 kg total (incl. bike). So I'm fairly happy with mine. Still using the stock TL band though, got the tape ready for the next tire change. But 100% agree about the pawls. 108 engagements ride brilliantly on rough terrain, and some people enjoy loud hubs, but I definitely hate it. Come to think of it I'll at least grease it with some heavier grease to reduce noise (withing operability). At least for the DT 370s on the Terra C I can attest that they're fairly quiet.

Hey JOM - You seated these with the chamber pump. Have they changed the hook? Like your CLX video, I battle with seating CLX’s and have to use a compressor. Heaven help me with a tire that’s been on and off a few times, even with a compressor. I have tubolito’s just in case I break a bead in the forests as I cannot see 1 Co2 reseating the tire after a big burp (or a big puncture needing a tube).

Hi Dave, the CLX wheels in my full length review video, and this little feature video, are among the first pairs made. As you can see, I had no problems seating any tyres, but, I've experienced your issue with tyres that have been stretched out from a couple of mount jobs. I suggest adding another layer of tape, even a third if needed. I find that completely solves the problem of looser fitting tyres, that even a compressor won't mount. Good luck!
