Route Planning Using Komoot - With the Wahoo Element Bolt

I was pretty late getting myself a route planner linked up to my cycling 'navigation unit' but for the last few years I've been using the Komoot and Wahoo Element Bolt combination. It's opened up lots of great rides I would have probably struggled to find time to plan without.
I hardly scratch the surface here, of the planning options in Komoot and showing the Wahoo Element Bolt's features but I hope this gives at least some vague idea what they can do.
Any excuse for a ride out and a bit of camera faff! Happy cycling folks!

I am like you and also did not start losing a route planner until three years ago. I also use Kamoot and since I have been using it it has dramatically improved the rides I take. It sometimes takes me on some odd routes and to dead ends but it is all part of the fun! Love watching your videos and keeps making me homesick :)

Thanks, Jay. Glad to bring a little slice of the Pennines to those off far and wide. Agree the odd detours are all part of the fun! Happy cycling!

Any method for introducing novelty and encouraging exploration has to be a good thing because it's so easy to fall back on default circuits, especially when time is tight or the weather is challenging. Wild place for that little footbridge.

It really is. I've run across it before in really strong winds and it's quite the experience. You also get a good sense - including as a cyclist generally, I suppose - of the noise pollution from major roads. There must have been a couple of years when construction of the motorway meant very boggy detours for the fell walkers up there. 'One man and his bog' indeed!

I used Komoot years ago then stopped. After seeing this video I will go back to it and maybe plan a few routes. Nice intro with piano music. Lisa Stansfield used to live near you.

Thanks, Adam. Ah yes I'd forgotten Lisa Stansfield was local. Never seen her out and about on the trails though! 😉 Happy cycling!

I tend to use Gravel as the MTB option quite often takes me on hike a bike sections ( I got stuck in a bog once lol ) or having to lift over locked gates & foot paths .It's ok if you know the area & can alter a MTB route but to be safe I use Gravel & bike touring .What's interesting is that it can completely miss a cycle path & take you on a road .But It's improving all the time .

Good to know. I haven't played with the Gravel setting much but will check it out. If I'm 'road bike touring' I tend to keep it on the road option and manually check/adjust the route at the planning stage as it can get a bit rough on the bike touring setting. Occasionally on road it can take me up and down a pointless hill when you can just continue flat on the road you're on for a few hundred yards but I'm getting wiser to its quirks and tricks now. As you say it's improving all the time. Thanks for the comment.

thanks for sharing. do you know if its possible to have it automatically sync with komoot so every new planned root would show automatically in Bolt? other question, i saw that Garmin has a nice web based map to plan the routes including climbing info, etc. does wahoo also have anything similar? cheers mate

Thanks for the comment. As far as I know (i.e. as I have it all set up) a planned Komoot route syncs with the app automatically but isn't on the Element Bolt until you pair it via the app and 'send it' to the device. So there's always that step where you have to get the route from the Element app to the device 'manually', if that makes sense. You can actually get caught out by this step if you start a ride somewhere where there is no phone signal - and haven't opened the app since you planned the route on Komoot - as the sync with Komoot doesn't start until you open the Element app again. I'm not aware of Wahoo having a planning map like you mentioned for Garmin, although I must admit I haven't fully explored the Wahoo ecosystem with other devices/features so they may have something. I'm quite tempted by the larger devices with more features/functionality/solar charging etc. but I can't honestly say I've ever missed anything or had any issues when planning on Komoot and touring with the little Element Bolt and synced routes. Happy cycling!

Thanks for your video. Will it give you turn by turn instructions when planning a route like you've done?

Once you've transferred the route onto your device (in my case the Wahoo Element Bolt), yes you get the turn-by-turn information for your ride. You get a beep and a flashing light on the unit to tell you when a turn is coming up and a 'warning noise' if you miss a turn etc. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling!

Hi thanks for the great video. Is it possible to adapt the route via Komoot on the go and sync it back to the Wahoo (without pausing the actual track recording). Thanks for your feedback

Thanks for the nice feedback, Marius. I'm not sure that's possible via Komoot. When I've been out and decided to change plans mid ride I end the ride on my Wahoo, plan a 'fresh route' on my phone in the Komoot app and essentially start again. There are options to plan on the go (certainly with some of the Garmin range) but I'm not 100% sure what routing software and specific head unit you'd need for this. It would definitely be a 'nice to have' but for me not essential. Happy cycling!

Lovely scenery, I just don't understand when you're riding why you wouldn't wear a helmet for your own safety especially riding on your own. I'm not being negative or patronising towards. Nice content though and very educational.

Thanks for the comment. It's certainly a nice part of the world to ride a bike. I made a video about helmet wearing and my own thinking and why I don't always wear a lid. I appreciate though it's a topic with differing and often strongly held views.
