I carved two spatula blanks from an alder log at our cabin in Alaska. Alder is a nice piece of wood to work with. I really enjoyed carving at this spot while listening to all the birds and other nature sounds. It was still relatively cold which was great since there were no mosquitoes! I planned on bringing the spatula blanks on a trip and finish them while traveling.
I was using the Adler Classic Scout Hatchet I got from REI during a sale. It's a nice packable hatchet that does the job.
