Rough Roads & Crystal Waters - Boondocking Colorado
On my second fall colors tour through Colorado I take on challenging backroads to see a picture-postcard wooden mill. I also get to look at a new Flagstaff A-frame Trailer!

REPOST: Sorry Folks, but there was one mistake I could not live with and had to re-edit the video. Being on the road this took me 8 hours to get back up again! Thanks for your patience, and thanks to the viewer for pointing out the error! SP

Slim Potatohead Oh my gosh, that road is crazy! I was actually just there with my daughter about 10 days ago and hiked in from the other side. We parked at the end of the road past Gothic where the sign says “4 wheel driver only-experienced drivers”, and hiked down from there. Beautiful scenery!! On another trip, we hiked up to Ice Lake west of Silverton, another incredibly beautiful place to see! A fairly strenuous hike though.

Tina Bost how long was this strenuous hike “mileage”?
@tinabost4748

Grace Iovine , approximately 3 miles each way. The hike to and from Crystal Mill was not overly strenuous, I was referring to the hike up to Ice Lake. I remember that one being more difficult, partly because we got off the path.😬
Keep America clean, thank you. That’s awesome for picking up all that trash.
Here's a tip for traveling rough roads like you were on. Carry a small 12V air pump. Lower your tire pressure to about 18 lbs. This will both lessen the bumps and improve traction over loose rocks. When you hit smooth surface just pump up your tires.
Colorado is one of our most beautiful states.
Crystal is beautiful and so is Marble and Ouray.
The tree colors in your country is mind blowing this is USA at its finest
You caught the aspens fall colors at the exact right time. The Mill shot was gorgeous! Ouray is called the Swiss Alps of US. When I was younger I drove all over Colorado mountains. Never saw a cop. They don't have to worry about speeders there due to the absence of guardrails.
Since my budget does not allow me right now to explore beautiful places as you do I would just like to say thank you very much slim potatohead for letting me ride along. I will continue to watch you're awesome videos
I agree with you about rude people with generators. I was in a National Forest this summer and the guy next to me ran his generator 8 hours a day. He sat inside all day long with a big screen TV and a portable air conditioner. These people have no appreciation of nature, much less caring about their neighbors.

Dennis wow, why did he come out into the wilderness if all he did was sit inside watching tv, makes no sense unless he can’t afford a sticks n bricks.

Had an experience like that in a BC provincial park. They have hours posted when you are allowed to run your gennie, but some people are ignorant. There was a group that ran one of those huge ones on wheels all day long. And they weren't even in camp. Just left it running. I was tempted to go shut it off, but... The parks here are now maintained by contractors, not government. They do next to nothing besides collect fees.

A lot of people go by what the RV dealer tells them. YOU NEED a GENERATOR. A's they were talked into buying it they feel that they should use it. Sad but true.

go out into nature to sit in AC... why not just stay at home... so strange.
Lucky nobody coming the other way on that road.
The Marble area is my favorite spot in Colorado! When I was a kid, dad drove a 1968 Cadillac ( long and low) up the Crystal road as far as Lizard Lake to fish. I doubt he’d make it now. Last time I was there my kids and hired a driver to take us to Chrystal and on around the loop. Gorgeous drive! I’d never try driving it myself, tho. I’ve heard the locals laugh about those that try with big trucks and Hummers. Those are too wide. I’m glad you made it up and back with no damage!
Slim, great video as always. Your picture of Luna, with the Earthshine and Venus was great, however the picture of the Milky Way at dusk and then after nightfall was just gorgeous. Very well done. Also, sorry to hear about the less than courteous neighbor. Keep the great videos coming, its always great to see your adventures. Thanks! Mike
Thismay be an older video but its really a delight to see. Plus i get to see your A frame pop up ..So its definitely a pleasing flashback.
Thanks! Like your videography/photography very much.
Stunning scenery Slim! As far as generators go people should be mindful of others. I bought a quiet Honda inverter generator that is whisper quiet while recharging the trailer batteries. I use it sparingly to respect others camping nearby . Its the worst when someone shows up with an old construction generator and blasts everyone out.

Those Honda's are extremely quiet, and they last forever, expensive initially but pays off in how long they last. I had a Champion 3.5k for a while, it wasn't quiet but wasn't extremely loud...I got rid of it because why do I need to lug that thing up to the hills I'm going camping to get away from everything not bring all the crap along LOL.
Gorgeous scenery and great tip about NOT taking your vehicle on the road the Crystal Springs! Thank you for beinging us with you on your travels.
I've lived in Arizona over half my life (I'm now 55) and I have never seen this place (the mill) and I've frequently traveled to Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico & Utah
Thanks for the memories!. I lived in Colorado for 28 years and traveled through the Eisenhower Tunnel and over McClure Pass many times. Beautiful State and I miss it.
I found this channel and subscribed a short time back.. it has become a current favorite when I want to decompress and relax. My only complaint .. if you could even call it that , is I am always wishing the videos were longer. Especially this one .. I could have watched for at least an hour without even noticing the time going by. Amazing content .. great entertaining videos for those like me who are simply spectators... but really well researched tips and useful information for those who actually participate .. I would rather BE a participant .. if life was different.. but for now .. I can live a bit vicariously .. My favorites are ones like this and the ones involving cold ... for some reason I have always gravitated to the colder climes ... Well, before this turns into a little novella , I will close with a heartfelt thank you for awesome content ! : )

Thanks Sharon! I occasionally have a chance to extend some videos, but I am confined as to how many hours are in a week. Glad you like them! SP
I just discovered your channel! Your voice sounds like a nature documentary voice!
Jeeps are made for those roads all i have to say is slow down abit the saying goes as slow as possible but just enough momentum to get you up
Last June I took that trip in my 3/4 ton, extra cab, longbed Chevy... scariest 4 miles of my life! Took an hour from Marble to the mill! Had to drive through a snow avalanche that someone had carved out to get through....At one point I could see a flattened Chevy pick-up truck at the bottom of the cliff...been there since the mid-70's.
A+ production...you are my favorite boondocker to look forward to new videos
What great scenery!! The old town. ❤
Slim, I can’t express enough how relaxing and interesting your videos are, please keep on doing this!
Fall colors🍁and beautiful night sky's!🌙🌌
Jeeps are ruff tuff do the ad for jeep ...gag it slim ...zoom !***
Dear mr. P, I'm not the subscribing kind of guy, but I never fail to watch your adventures. You just know how to live.
Once again I was captivated by the visual and story telling. Thank you so much. I am going to take my time to catch up on all you videos so I can savour them. Maybe one day I too might witness some of these gems for myself. 😁🦌🐿
Outstanding, Slim!
Your Nack for finding such great places really incurages me. Video work is awesome. You sure that was a road and not a river bed you were on.
Fantastic. You're really living the life. Hoping that one day in the future I'll be able to get an Aliner. I've been researching different campers and the practicality of the Aliners seem like just what I'd need. Thanks for the videos......the quality and production are excellent.
Dang! Just when you think you've seen the best that Slim can dish up, along comes a video that just breaks new ground with stunning scenery and color. Honestly, Slim, I don't know how you manage to outdo yourself time and time again. And to think that you do all of this on a shoestring budget with very modest equipment. Your creativity and resourcefulness are boundless, it seems, and ALL coming from a One Man operation. It's truly humbling to armchair travelers who are still planning their own escape. We appreciate you so.
Instead of an ATV, I bet a horseback ride would be much better. A beautiful location. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful scenes and very thoughtful narration
That was great. The scenery, the wildlife, the annoying neighbour (!) - and that landslide that was trying to pass itself off as a road. Excellent video!

I love all the videos what pretty country
A trick few use to dissipate engine heat is to use the heater, even in Summer, temporarily to avoid excessive heating. I do the same. It works.
I always love your videos. Last September, my wife and I flew out to Colorado (being East coasters, this was the furthest west we had ever been) for a 8-9 day vacation all over Colorado including Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado National Monument, and more. While we were there, weather closed the road in Rocky Mountain NP so we were bummed that we didn't get to drive the whole way through, but the snow mixed in with the fall colors were breathtaking. Anyways, seeing this video reminded me of how much I miss the views and colors of the fall in Colorado.

Thanks so much for the motivation, off to Frontenac State Park, MN tomorrow rain or shine.
Pilgrim, you are fast carving out yer place among the respected and admired Naturalists of our time! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I love Your videos. Great scenery , great history and no drama. Now that is what i call a winning you tube channel.
this is beautful .im trying to watch some of your older videos. and that cold water will keep a watermelon perfect.
Hell's bells.... I didn't mind watching that again at all
You are there at the right time of the year to capture those beautiful colours of the Fall trees, wow that road was insane, and the beauty also, just so beautiful...! Thank you for sharing your fantastic video, the best!
You drive a bit too fast over those rough, rocky roads. I would take it down to a crawl to prevent damaging my vehicle & trailer.
Man that old hydro station was too cool!! Shit like that never ceases to amaze me. Just gorgeous.
Slim, you are amazing! Thanks for taking us with you. Incredible every time you post.
Your videos are awesome. Each one better than the last one.
That route through Ouray, CO (US 550)is such a beautiful route. I've taken that route with a loaded semi, it is a challenge especially the tight curves, and steep grades but totally worth it.
That's a nice camper ... Awesome video as always
Thanks for sharing Slim. Great video, enjoyed traveling along.
Spectacular scenery, love the aspens!
Beatiful trip
Just beautiful. Regards AJ
Beautiful country 😁👍
I recently found your channel. Love your videos. While I travel in a 35 ft class A with wife and cats, I get a lot of ideas from your videos. You were in my area with this episode. I live at the other end of that road in Mt Crested Butte. You were on the good part of the road. Keep up the work.
I love your videos. Generators are such a buzzkill when you are out camping.
Outstanding !
Beautiful!!!😊
absolutely beautiful, thank you so much, so much
Just found your channel and loving it, thank you for all your great videos and adventures!
Absolutely beautiful. Looks like your timing for a Colorado mountain trip was perfect.
That would be loosely called a road! 👌🌞
Love this
Marble, crystal mill and the crystal river, my backyard! Gotta love living here. Thanks for coming through
Slim, you are my teacher. Thank you. Jeep should be a sponsor!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing!.
The Fall colors are awesome. Thanks.
I have been on that road to Crystal city in a Chevy equinox. To say the least it’s rough. Tire had to be fixed in Crested Butte. But love the scenery! Thanks! I’m in love with Colorado!
WOW! Freakin Wow! Thank you for your great videos!
Beautiful scenery,
Beautiful
Love it! That is some FANTASTIC country!
Thanks for sharing your explorations
thanks slim,,, good one
Slim, I have to ask. Are you retired ? You look too young for that & how do you finance these trips? Please forgive me if this too personal. I simply can't get my head around how your able to find the time and resources to do what you do. Your a VERY lucky person. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

Great trip!
Very well done, I enjoyed watching.
Hahahaha that's so funny my wife said the same thing about those trees that they look like they have eyes. That's too funny.
Back in 2000 i drove my car to the top of Mt Evans (Colorado) which is a little over 14,000ft... up there it is just too cold (summer time) and the air is so thin that we could hardly breath and my car had lost a good portion of its power so it was dogging big time. Neat views up there above the tree line...plus there was still snow on the ground in late June. I loved Colorado.i think a lot of other people do to because i think its been one of the fastest growing states the last decade or more...so probably people everywhere now...
Great video editing and photography. Thanks Slim
That really is a beautiful scenery - thank you for sharing the experience.
I always enjoy your videos. Another fun trip.
Great video keep them coming

Beautiful country side. It is now on my bucket list. Thank you
Very nice video as Always THX
Thanks for the ride, great scenery going through that area. I'd love to be able to get out and go on trips like that someday.
Welcome to our beautiful State, Slim, Excellent Video!!!!
I've been to Crystal, CO. My friend took me and showed me a cabin he built in Crystal many decades ago and shared old stories of the Fogels. Sadly, he lost the rights to the cabin through some complicated family drama.
loved it ,i lived in co. for 5 years
