    Fantastic hunt. Sure does bring memories. I've been in some of those horrendous canyons but that's where the big, old boys tend to be. And you can't go wrong with a .270. Been hunting with one for 58 years and still doing it! I have a lot of other calibers but a .270 Win. will always be the faithful one. Great video. The way you presented it, I was right there with you. Thank you for taking us along with you on this great hunt!

    An ethical hunter. Good to see. Many less patient hunters would have taken frontal shots and the results could have been much different. Nice job. I don't say that to many hunters who post stuff on line. Even if you would have backed off and have left him the experience would have just as valuable. When I first started hunting a special bit of canyon land in the Bighorns I found a group of 5 deer on the opposite side of a canyon. With another steep canyon on the other side of the small plateau they were on. About 400 yards away. When the biggest lay down his belly swelled up toward the sky like a big old steer's does. Biggest bodied deer I've ever seen. Typical antlers but huge. I watched them for at least 15 minutes and then decided to pass on a shot. Too far for a sure kill for me and I thought I'd never be able to get to him. I've been back to the spot many times and I still think I was right about that. My reward is that many years later I can still him lying there. And I can still feel the beauty of those canyons that were at that point forking off into three separate deep canyons that emptied into the desert 3K feet below. T'hat is still my favorite place to hunt and to play even when it's foo hot and dry to hunt. And you're right, it's not just the deer - it's all of it.

  • @kshoey73

    @kshoey73

    5 жыл бұрын

    Of course it would. Please contact your regional FWP biologist and tell them it does effect mature male deer numbers. I have witnessed this in the area I live. There was 120inches of snow on the plains in a 3 county area the winter of 2010-11. Public land hunters came fall of 2011 and 2012 but there were almost no deer. The word got out and there was little to no pressure for the next 2-3 yrs so the deer that survived were able to get some age on them. As a result in the fall of 2014 and 15 there many deer taken that were near 200 inches (many is 10-15 that i personally saw photos of just in the county i live) In my opinion, if the pressure is off they have a chance to become older. And when it comes to mule deer, 5-8 yr old deer are what you would consider quality. Of course genetics will play role in antler size but at least you can witness the potential thats out there.

    The mule deer foundation does nothing for the deer in that area. (@19:52) The deer have what they need right where they are. That statement makes it sound like a foundation planted the trees and grow the grass. Mule deer over 6 or 7 years of age are a rarity on public lands and that is mostly caused by hunting during the rut. If it is so hard to find places, and you really mean mature deer, then use your fame and influence to change the mismanagement of Montana deer herds. The era of "opportunity" has to give way to sound management practices at some point. Montana's public areas are being over hunted and that is the reason why your buck is so hard to find. There are many a hunter out there who would like to see healthier populations of our central and eastern Montana game herds. I have sat and watched nice bulls and bucks for an hour just as Jason did and decided to walk away. I am not a trophy hunter, but sometimes i believe a mature animal is worth more alive than dead, just like catch and release fishing. I like to think that animal could live 3 or 4 more years. It is too bad most hunters harvest animals on public land based on the logic that the next guy to see that animal will harvest it anyway, so I'll take it first. I am not trying to shame anyone here or degrade the work Jason does, which is done well, but the logic in MTFWP management needs to change from opportunity to a little more quality. Not bigger deer, but healthier populations which would include mature deer. Jason, your videos respect the animal and the environment so thank you for not being a fist pumping, "now that's what I'm talking bout" type of hunter. The change in management will have to come from hunters putting pressure on FWP. I hope there are more outdoorsman/women out there that share my thoughts.

  • @jasonmatzingerofficial

    @jasonmatzingerofficial

    5 жыл бұрын

    kshoey73 I appreciate your thoughtful message and I do agree about bigger deer would come from not being able to hunt the rut. The problem with that is the more we limit hunting and hunters the harder it is to keep this sport alive. Opportunity is key to keeping hunting relevant. So do we want to only shoot big deer every 10 years of our life or do we want our kids and others to be able to fall in love with hunting the same as we have? My statement about the Mule Deer Foundation wasn’t specifically meant for that drainage but the area in general. I know they pay a lot of attention to our herds and their well being and I for one and happy they are. Whether it affected this deer or mule deer in general it’s a win for everyone who loves to see them. Best of luck this season and I really appreciate you tuning in!

    Maybe it would help if you watch this video again. Jason talked about taking in the majestic surroundings and admiring the animal in its habitat. I believe the saying goes something like, “It’s about the journey not the destination.” For some, it’s about being in the hunt and not just the kill. I agree with Jason that basking in the moment of the present, this is what replenishes the soul!
