ROTUMA | PEPJEI FARA | 2019
Here is a video that captures the life and spirit as we farewell 2018 and welcome 2019.
Every year Rotuman people celebrate what we call "Fara" where we dance and sing and celebrate the ending and beginning of a new year and is very unique to our culture.
Fara (Which means "to ask" in Rotuman) is a traditional Rotuman cutlural and social event, occurring in the summertime festival of "Av' Manea" (Party Time) where groups of people of singers and dancers travel from house to house to perform and entertain their hosts.

pouring powder and spraying perfume is to show your appreciation of the group that has come to your home, it works well as with all the dancing from house to house, we appreciate the perfume that is sprayed on us due to sweat etc

In the islands It's just a way of appreciation and also cause the group either walks from house to house or travel by bus but when they are actually there and perform for the house they are of course sweaty and thirsty so the house powders them or sprays perfumes and gives the people water or juice so that they can dry themselves and smell nice for the next house to go and celebrate and sing and dance during the festive season . Maybe one day you can experience this when you come to Fiji or Rotuma.
What’s the meaning of the white powder and spray? Interesting and great video.
