Please musicians and soloists, do not let Rota's concertos get lost. Please!

Some truly excellent playing by both soloist and orchestra. They make the concerto sound like it's a piece of chamber music, and you can't do much better than that. Giovanni "Nino" Rota (1911 - 1979) is known to just about everyone for his film scores, which include the first two "Godfather" movies (he won an Oscar for the score to no. 2), "War and Peace" (1956 with Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer) and numerous scores for movies directed by Zeffifrelli, Visconti and Fellini. In many ways - composing 171 film scores - he was to European movies what Korngold and Rosza were to Hollywood - it is surprising that he found time to compose works of "pure" music. But he did, and his oeuvre is surprisingly extensive. Cellists should be pleased that Rota wrote his 2nd and 3rd cello concertos (he wrote a "no. 0" in 1925) in 1972-73, given that the first 2 Godfather movies were released in 1972 and 1974. It would seem that The Godfather struck a cello string in Rota. One of Rota's compositional habits - which came up for disapproving remarks fairly often - was his penchant for pastiches of various past styles, which quite often turned into outright quotation of his own earlier music or even others' music. However this may be considered as an homage to earlier composers. One of the most noticed examples of such incorporation is his use of the Larghetto from Dvorak's Opus 22 Serenade for Strings in E major as a theme for a character in Fellini's La Strada. His use of a motif from Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G major, K 216, with which his second concerto for cello and orchestra opens, should not be seen as a quotation but rather as a recollection gratefully acknowledged. The first bar comes direct from Mozart, though it is immediately enlarged upon with a melodic intensity typical of Rota’s themes. It was also Mozart who prompted him to avoid a move from tonic to dominant and back in the first part of the double exposition and to remain, instead, in the tonic until the soloist introduces the second subject. The learned harmonies with their French flavor and the fluid movement between tonalities lying a semitone apart are, however, Rota’s own.Rota was not a true neoclassicist. His works do, however, reveal a direct link with the classical period in music, especially with Mozart. His expressive techniques, his idiom, were those of the romantics and the composers of the early twentieth century. Even though the work of Schoenberg and his school was entirely foreign to him, there are strong hints of modal flexibility and polytonality, used with naturalness and moderation, in his works for orchestra.Certainly, the style in which Rota's 2nd Cello Concerto was written in 1973 was anathema among Boulez-Darmstadt composers (which was pretty much all of the composers in those days), which is probably why we haven't heard the concerto performed until the 2000s. Since then, it has received at least 3 CD recordings, so its stock is on the rise. If I were to program this concerto, I'd include Prokofiev's Classical Symphony or Stravinsky's Symphony in C and Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin or the Valses nobles et sentimentales - with one of the suites from Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances as a further possibility.

Notável no seu todo - alguma discrepância entre o violoncelo e os metais sobretudo no 3º andamento. Mas uma peça que faz lembrar a vivacidade "séria" de Hindemith ou Honegger - sobretudo no 2º andamento, excelente. Grazzie.
