Music by Farya Faraji, vocals by Farya Faraji and Kelareh Kabiri, lyrics by Ferdowsi, and artwork by Saeed Khazaei. This song is about the central character of the Shāhnāmeh, the Iranian national epic written in the 10th century by Ferdowsi, with the lyrics being from the same work. The Shāhnāmeh is effectively Ferdowsi’s adaptation of Iranian mythology; Rostam and his adventures predate him by centuries, and there is attestation of his legend as far back as the Parthian era. The greatest and most well known of all figures of Iranian mythology; Rostam is to Iran what Herakles is to Greece, and his name is known by all Iranians, some baring his name, even in non-Iranic countries such as Turkey or Georgia. The instrumentation harkens to both Classical Persian music as well as folk music like Kurdish and Khorasani music of Iran: the instruments used are the davul drums, the daf drums, the santour, qanun and tar. ​@@DefinitelyNotEmma Yes, tigers once roamed the forests of Tabaristan, a region in northern Iran along the Caspian sea. They went extinct less than a century ago due to excessive hunting. The new European hunting rifles, which were brought to Iran in late 19th century, drove many a precious species of Iranian wildlife into extinction, including the iconic Persian lion (which was on Iranian flags since 11th century). Now the Iranian panther is also on the verge of extinction.

Yes, I think we should be taught that at school in Greece. We learn too little on Persians, mostly through the Persian Wars and Alexander the Great's campaign but this is a shame - there is much more to Iranian history and civilisation to learn as Iranians had, like us Greeks, many civilisational cycles, including the Parthian and the Sassanid and the Safavid eras. Just like Greece was a civilisational tree in Europe and Eastern Mediterranean and China was such one in East Asia, Iran was a civilisational tree in the Middle of Asia.

Also interesting parallels between Rostam and Marko Kraljević. In mythology they're both presented as physically colossal, for instance in a folk story I heard, a rocky hill in a region in Serbia with a flat top is said to once have been a mountain before Marko Kraljević used it as a stool, flattening it. Also, Marko Kraljević has a famous horse as well, Šarac, who is also described as the greatest horse on earth. I don't know why these elements are shared, maybe they're borrowings from Iran into the Balkan Slavs, or maybe they descend from some much much older Indo European archetypes

another interesting fact is the similarities between Rostam and Hildebrandt, a gothic warrior of germany. there is over 500 years diffrence between stories. He also had fought his long lost son. Their endings are similar aswell.

Hello, Farya Faraji! I am brazilian and I have read Dick Davis's translation of the Shahnameh (although its abridged and one day I hope to read the entire version), the stories of the Shahnameh are awesome, it's a shame that it's not very famous in the West and even less in Brazil. I also read "Vis and Ramin" and liked it a lot, but I don't know if you have plans for making a music based on this book. Your music is very good and have cool themes, I would love to see one Epic Symphony based on the battle between Rostam and Esfandiar (my favorite part in the Shahnameh).

For those who don't know, Rostam is a mythological hero from the Iranian pantheon of heroes - a kind of Iranian Hercules if I may use a comparative Greek figure to give an idea. He faced fierce enemies and monsters, he did 7 Labours, pretty much what mythological heroes did. And like so many heroes he was betrayed and murdered by a close kin, his plotting half-brother. Great story.

I am from the „Teutoburger Wald“, so of course I would support this wish ☺️But imagine: Farya studies intensively the culture, music, history and language of the regions, his songs are based on. How can he dive into a new topic, when he publishes every 3.5 days another song, playing the instruments mostly by himself, translating the lyrics, every third song with a creative spot that he films and cuts. And inbetween there are his 1 hour lectures and long symphonies. Alongside hopping over the Greek islands and reporting from there. I think, we will have to wait for a long time…. This man is a mystery to me….One could think there is a whole professional team behind him, but his mother seems to be the only one that lends him a voice here and there. He does not even have a patreon link so far, although people are almost begging for it. Absolutely crazy 😵‍💫

Music is cool and smooth and professional as always. Keep being absolute legend. Only one suggestion for a future video or a series of videos hopefully. Imperial Russian Music, Nicholas II or Peter the Great something like that I am sure you would rock that too, knowing your slavic music is top tier. All the best man
