Thanks for the straight forward walk through. Really helpful for people like me who have inherited similar stoves through home-purchase!

What a beautiful O'keefe Merritt, mine is a 1951 the whole left side is storage. Thank you for your video. In the 28 years that I have owned mine, this is the first time that I needed to relight my oven.

So far this is the most thorough vid Inhave found for lighting/relighting a vintage stove’s pilots, thank you! My local vintage stove repairman walked me through the steps over the phone and said to start by lighting the pilots on top, then the oven and broiler pilots. But my guess is the order doesn’t matter??

No. The order doesn't really matter, as long as you light all the pilots shortly after turning on the main gas supply.

Great video, I think your reconditioned stove has added safety features. I see a regulator, flame sensors etc.

We have a 1947 version of that exact stove. We just finished restoring it. Except on our stove, the safety valves are both under the cook tops in the back. By the way. Thought you might like to know. There's nothing electronic about the pilot thermocouples. They're strictly mechanical. There's an oil inside that expands when heated. This transfers through a tube to the safety valve operating a catch. After the pilot is lit. You press the button to engage the catch opening the safety valve allowing gas to flow to the oven or broiler control valves on the front panel... If the pilot goes out the thermocouple releases the catch which closes the safety valve stopping gas flow to the burner.... Be aware though. These safety valves don't shut off instantly once the pilot goes out. They take about a minute. Also the cook top pilots have no safety features on these old stoves...

Hi Daniel. First of all thanks for the video. It made lighting the stove very easy!!! I was wanting to convert my O'Keefe and Merritt stove to propane like yours. Do you know what parts I would need to get and where to get them? Also how would I install them? Thanks!

Good evening J Jander, Sorry for the delay. I am a CPA and in the middle of Tax Season. Just now getting a moment to look at your question. This stove is from my family cabin. I rebuilt the stove after tearing it down to the metal. All the parts are available from an eBay company call Grapevine Sally. They are out of southern California. They have all the guides and parts to repair the stove. These stoves are built like tanks. My stove is dated 1949. You do not need to convert the jets on these stoves. You can just buy the gas switch that goes on the feed line, switch it to LP gas, and then you just need the adjust the jet heads and the pilot lights to a lower setting. There is an adjustment screw on each jet and pilot light. Original parts and refurbished parts are available from Grapevine Sally. They also sell guides on the old stoves. It’s amazing what is available for these stoves. I ended up having all my valve refurbished by a company out of Louisiana, and rechroming done through grapevine sally in LA. Caution, its expensive to refurbish. Cheaper to by a new stove. By my cabin is from 1934 and I am keeping everything in the pre WWII vintage. Here is the link to Grapevine Sally grapevinesally.com/okeefe-merritt-stoves/ they were very helpful in advising me on the conversion and the parts.

@@danielross292 Thanks so much for your reply!! I didn't know it would be so easy. We currently live in the bay area, but are moving out to the midwest and will only have propane in our property and we love our Okeefe and Merrit stove so much that it would be worth it to just take it with. What do you exactly mean by gas line switch? I went on Grapevine Sally and I saw a pressure regulator to switch it from natural gas to propane. Here is the link. grapevinesally.com/new-ng-lp-pressure-regulator-3-4-x-3-4-4/ Is that what you are talking about. When we got our stove we had a stove repairman come with a lot of old stove experience and I got to see and help him a little with adjusting the stove and replacing parts so I know a little, but I'm definitely not an expert! Also wanted to say that my wife and I are so impressed by how you keep your stove in such a beautiful condition!!
