Rosette Design & Construction - Part 2: Preparation of Design Elements
Ойын-сауық
Stephen Faulk, Constructor of Flamenco and Classical Guitars.
This was made in 2011, I no longer have the access to the original digital file. I thought about remixing all three videos and over dubbing them with a new narrative but I can't now. At the time the sound was as it is and I can't fix it now.
When this three part series was put up in 2012 it was one of the few videos that showed how to make rosettes. Now there are dozens, if this one is too noisy try one of the other ones. Or you can turn off the sound during the flamenco music.

Josh, Sometimes I do, or just pass them over the bending iron for a few seconds. The strips are so thin then do not need much heat. But if you use strips that are under 0.20 thick they usually bend without heat or water. It depends on the wood the strips are cut from. Sometimes I have trouble if I use hardwoods to get the dark colors, but with Poplar dyed veneers usually no trouble to bend.
thanks for sharing.I enjoyed the music too ;)
You can learn more about this process by consulting the Guild of American Luthiers article on rosettes by Eugene Clark, he was the one who taught me this system and then later published it in the GAL. I put the method in KZread for people to see it and use what ever parts of it they find useful. There are other ways to do rosettes, but this is one of the ways Spanish makers used.

Stephen Faulk I'm restoring an old blanca with some issues and just wondering if you have any useful advice on how to bring colours of an old faded rosette back to life, which btw. is pretty cool looking in itself. Seem the black wood is the only one remaining consistent with the passage of time, all other dyed pieces of wood have faded away during years and exposure to sunlight so the pattern becomes less wisible and I wish I could revive them. Thank you for your great contribution, I love to watch your informative and original videos.

རྫོགས་ཆེན་ Hi, It depends on the maker, in some cases with rare guitars by important makers it would be better to leave the guitar more intact with all the historical wear and tear. A mistake to remove too much patina which shows the history of the instrument. Usually the rosette will return to being more colorful with a light cleaning and a very thin coat of clear shellac. In any case I would not deeply sand to reach unoxidized wood. If a careful cleaning with distilled water and Q-tips will remove surface dirt, and a Q-tip used very carefully with tiny drop of naptha will pull up stains made by skin oil and dirt. You really should not go deeper that cleaning the topical grime and dirt. That usually allows the rosette to be seen better, but not over cleaned.
what ever music you like is cool but it was too loud other then that I appreciate your vid
I have not thought about metallic elements in the rosette, but I'm sure you could add certain types of shiny materials
thank you so much the info is great for me
Is somebody strangling a chicken in the background?
Interesting thought process, Stephen. I like your thinking on the simplicity of colored lines like Torres often used on his simpler guitars.

Thank you, I hope the music was not too distracting- We did not know the level would be so high in the final video.

The problem could be edited out. We did not know the music would be so loud. I will check to see if I can overdub that section. Sorry for the trouble. If you want to know anything about that section I'm happy to answer questions.
do you soak your strips to make them more flexible?
What is the thickness of the top?
Do you ever consider using some shiny metallic materials?
no one would patent that music, so it's free

How can you expect interested viewers focus on what you're doing with that cacophony in the background?
That load music in the background is very distracting . Anmoying
I’m a flamenco lover, but cante in the background while you’re speaking is quite distracting.
I know that this video has been posted for sometime but you have a very strange taste in music, or either the cat in the back room sounds like he's dying.
That wailing in the background is so distracting
I could not watch the video because of the music. Horrible!
