Roselle, ruby red flowers with a sour and fruity taste

※Click the "cc" button in the menu bar to choose your subtitle language!
Roselle, or Hibiscus sabdariffa, has medicinal properties and special effects, but it’s just a simple ingredient for us. We dry them in the sun to make wine and take it out to treat our guests during the New Year's Pork Dishes. We can also add rock sugar to make Preserved Roselle and eat it as a snack at our leisure or breaktime. Would you like to have a taste of Preserved Roselle?

In Jamaica we call it Sorrel. We make a spiced drink with it during Christmas time. Some people add white rum to it or they leave it to ferment to make Sorrel wine. It's really delicious.

Bit late to the party but here in Australia, that is a hibiscus plant known as the Rosella Hibiscus. We make them into tea, jam and use them to flavour sparkling wine. I’ve got one growing in my yard and a jar of the flowers to make drinks with. The flowers “bloom” in the bottom of wine flutes whilst releasing a red syrup into the drink.

Fresh Roselle is the best. The nutrients are as rich as cranberry and blueberry. There're tons of vitamin C and A. Good for eyes. There AHA for skin (should use the dried one). However, it effects to kidney, should eat with jujubes coz jujubes remedy kidneys. Roeselle shouldn't be consumed too long. However, I love it!!!

This is called "LABOG", in our dialect in the Visayan region of my country. We put the leaves in chicken or pork stew. It gives a nice sour taste to it. One of my favorite dishes from our town. I haven't eaten it in a while since I am far from home (in a different region). I just learn today the English name of this plant. I even google it just now, just to verify if it is really the same plant. Thank you.❤
