Rose Wylie | The Painter who was an Aero Girl | News item | Apr 2014

Final part of a mini-documentary series, which tries to hunt down the "Aero Girls'.
The Aero girls, as they're now described, are a series of portraits of young women, commissioned by chocolate maker "Rowntrees' in the 1950s, to adorn their advertisements.
This final episode is especially interesting, as it turns out one of the Aero Girls is celebrated artist Rose Wylie. Although aged 80 in this doc, she only found recognition as an artist in her mid seventies.
The Aero Girl portrait of Rose, was painted by celebrated artist Anthony Devas, whilst she was an art student in Folkestone, Kent, aged 21.

3:34 For American viewers, an "agony aunt" is an advice columnist, e.g. Dear Abby or Ann Landers.

Ever since I first learned about this painter a few years ago, I mispronounced his name. Now I know better. It's De-VASS.

Define contemporary art! Poor Nicole. Does she know she is depicted as a non recognisable blob of red paint randomly splashed onto a piece of paper? Art???, honestly???

Contemporay art is art that is made in the same era we live in. A slightly narrower definition is art that is influential in our own age. If you think those are just random blobs you should try to do something like this yourself. You might disapoint yourself. It's not as easy as it looks.

so contemporary art is conceptual...do not like this type of painting at all as I think too much remains in the artist's mind and never makes it to the canvas - some might say 'complete rubbish'
