Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) Pruning Guide - How to Prune Correctly for Maximum Flowers, Hedge

Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is a stalwart in the garden. These long lived flowering shrubs may not be the showiest plants, but they are incredibly easy to grow and very robust. They are so robust in fact that many times they outgrow their space in the garden and should be pruned back. In this video we demonstrate clearly step by step how to prune our Rose of Sharon in the spring time. These plants produce their flowers on new growth so this can really be done at any time, however I believe an early spring pruning is the optimal time as they will quickly regrow. I am demonstrating on my Althea hedging by my deck so that my plants will stay nice and upright as well as retain their bushy habit. #shrubs #pruning #gardening

The best of the Althea pruning videos I’ve watched. Lots of specific instructions here. Mine is an umbrella shape right now and I want to make sure I don’t kill it when I trim it today. Thanks!

I relocated a 10 footer with multiple trunks from good soil to crappy red dirt up in northern California. From that one I now have 22 more. Love them, hard to kill . They take the Redding heat well.

Thanks Devin, for showing us a very good video on Rose of Sharon. Your video was right on time for me...tomorrow I am trimming back my plant. I watched a video suggesting adding some Rose fertilizer to your plant in the spring. Do you agree with this recommendation?

Great pruning advice as usual. Again, I love your property looking a bit hap hazard even with interspersed weeds. I’d love for you to do a video solely on what are weeds, dandelions, invasive and okay weeds. Not all weeds are necessarily bad. People don’t know what are good weeds or bad. Just a suggestion. Thanks again for your enthusiasm!!!

I got a question Do you recommend any sort of spray to combat mold for the rose of Sharon? My mom did a stupid thing and use the pressure washer on her plant and the bark got compromised and now her tree is infested with some sort of mold.

Devin, I live in Toronto and was wondering when would be the best time to plant Rose of Sharon, what fertilizer do you suggest and how tall and wide do they get. Thanks for your help

Now is a great time to get them planted! size can vary depending on cultivar, but typically 8-10' tall and 5' wide, sometimes bigger. a basic osmocote slow release fert will be just fine

Have you done a show on elderly azaleas? After removing years of vine and wisteria coverage, I found that some of mine had adapted by growing in weird directions with lots of spaces. Not sure how to prune

I have rose of Sharon. It's spreading no matter what i do. I do prune it and remove the the seedlings. But every year it just has a mind of it's own and just grows wild and out of control. I'm in SW PA.

Perhaps rip it out and replace with a newer cultivar, the new ones don’t produce seedlings like the older ones do
