The album goes through all the steps of a toxic relationship: 1. The omen of something bad about to happen 2. The wedding and the happy times where "she will be with me until dead tear us apart" 3. The first hints of jealousy from his side 4. The abuse: that's why the sounds of ambulance and overall strong sounds 5. The sadness and pain of feeling trapped in that relationship 6. A spoiler of how is she going to scape from it (thanks to "two angels"), voiced by actress Rossy de Palma. 7. the praying, where the protagonist "cries a river" 8. the passion, where it is implied that she meets a new secret lover 9. the lullaby, where she has a miscarriage and sings out of sadness (the first angel) 10. the scape, where the sounds of metal, splashes and the "river of blood" in the lyrics imply the abuser is killed, and probably the lover too (the second angel) 11. the reproach from the protagonist to her abuser about his behaviour.

so the whole album’s based on a medieval novel called “flamenca”, and that’s why the songs are in chapters. it follows the main character who is a woman that gets caught in an abusive relationship, and rosalia sings from her perspective for almost all the songs. we go from hinting at the abuse at the beginning to actual violence exploding (de aqui no sales has police sirens for a reason), and over the course of the album, the main character also gets pregnant and then kills her abusive husband in maldicion, and it ends with her declaring in the last song that no man would ever have power over her like that again. that’s a super short rundown, but i highly recommend looking at translations of the lyrics to get the whole story. the music videos are good too, especially the one for de aqui no sales imo. also in bagdad, rosalia did straight up use the melody of “cry me a river” by justin timberlake with his permission. if i remember correctly, he enjoyed how it sounded so much he happily let her use it. also RIP your chair.

I saw her in San Francisco and when she did De Aqui No Sales/Bulerias it was INCREDIBLE! She was whirling her hair around and doing flamenco dances I lost my mind it’s probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to!

This is one of her best projects ❤️❤️❤️ I still come back to this album at least once a week lol This album is about a horrible abusive relationship. Feeling trapped with a toxic partner~
