A true gentleman, eloquent both verbally & musically; modest; man of the people; no "star" antics or pretensions. I saw him only once 1972 Xmas-New Year concert , Dublin National Stadium. A terrible, unnecessary loss to Ireland and far beyond. World's greatest guitarist , ever, with a true, rich singing voice. R.I.P. Rory.

Saw Rory 3 times, a force of nature. Not enough superlatives to describe how good this guy is, Magician, Genius, Maestro..that'll do for starters. Such a humble modest man, like most people who are so talented, they don't realise it.☘

The night I saw Rory live. Winterland S.F. Cal, January maybe February 1977. Rory opened for Blue Oyster Cult & Bob Seger. I was a newbie 15 year old guitar player who loved the blues so I was familiar with Rory and couldn't wait to see him live and man was I ever blown away. To this day I've never seen a video of his live shows that equal his performance that night. It was jaw dropping from the opening note until the end of his second encore. Second encore for a third bill opening act? Yep, he killed it that hard and it was like 'screw the other bands, this is what we came to see'! I seriously thought all those lighters were going to burn the joint down. It was like he was on a mission to put his imprint on everyone's brains forever, well mission accomplished, I can never forget that show even 40+ years later. Poor Bob Seger trying to follow Rory that night, actually felt kind of bad for him because he was quite good but the fans were drained and kind of gave him half-hearted applause. Same for Blue Oyster Cult, on any other night it would have been a mind blowing BOC show but Rory kind of put everyone in their proper place that night. The only other live performances that I've personally witnessed that equal that night were Clapton, Johnny Winter and SRV (who I each saw several times but only once played with that type of ferocity and energy). That's saying something folks.

His bassist once said that playing with Rory was." a nightmare " because one couldn't ever know or even guess where he " was going next". . , I'm convinced Rory didn't know either because he was actually channeling a Divine Mind in which there were zero rules other than Commandment 1. No rules, just follow your gut, your fingers will figure out what they do, all by themselves , just trust and love and go with whatever, wherever your fingers decide to go ! Once, somewhere in London, a then young girl I knew had gone to London ( as a lot of Irish students such as myself did ) with a bunch of her fellow students to earn a few quid for her next year at College . They used to go out for a beer and fun every weekend and one week one of them saw an ad for a music venue and the act on this particular night was someone with an Irish name and this girl had heard of this guy, he was supposed to be famous as a guitarist so she suggested to her pals that they go and see this Rory Gallagher ! The venue was only 2 bus rides away from where they lived so they shrugged their shoulders and agreed they " might as well " go if only to see what all the fuss about this guy was about ! Ireland was a deeply conservative Catholic country where priests were at least as powerful as politicians and the regular music on radio was mostly the mind-poison fondly called " country and Irish", I kid you not ! Marie told me about the gig and her terrifying experience as she watched this apparently famous rock guitarist :: When we got there the noise was blistering even from outside ! At the door were a few guys in the queue and we paid our 10 pounds entrance fee and went in despite the noise. Yer man was on stage playing his 'heavy metal and in the audience the guys were jumping on the tables and dancing to the tuneless noise. We were kinda pushed forward towards the obvious maniac who was torturing his guitar on the wee stage but I turned to see my pals but I I couldn't bcos the crowd was all moving towards the stage and though nobody was pushing me from behind we were all moving towards the stage as though we were trying to hear better though at times it sounded like this so-called famous Irish guitarist was playing a few hundred jet engines ! I kept moving forward with the crowd even though I didn't want to and, nearly deaf, I could feel the edge of the stage pressing against my chest but the pressure from behind was still growing though nobody seemed to be pressing behind me and then it was getting really hard to breathe and, Leonard, I started to panic when I couldn't breathe at all and I was crying and I dirtied myself because I I couldn't shout for help and I managed to look up at the noise guitarist and he was about 3 yards from me and then hre looked at me and I thought he was in love with me and I was crying because he loved me and I can't breathe and Im going to die .. .. .. " R.G. is centre stage when he sees someone with blond hair and a very red face just beside the stage and he knows this person is in trouble and crying for his help but his fingers won't stop and he walks the short distance over to her, still playing, and kneels down in front of her and screams as loudly as he can " Grab my fuckin jacket !" She reaches up with both her hands and grabs my jacket and hangs on as I pull her up on to the stage and she's able to walk with me to the side of the stage and then I go back to work ". Rory kept playing and shit-scaring the bassist during the entire stretch of about 10 minutes of his saving a stranger's life and all I can write now, right now, is God Bless you, Rory and Marie. I know no more than this about this drama but I will happily give my phone number to anyone who loves Rory as much as I do ! Leonard McCormack

Just had the 25th anniversary of Rory’s passing, June 5, 2020 and I still remember where I was when I heard the news. Been a fan for over 45 years and saw The Master a couple of times in my youth. Sadly missed by the Blues genre and I’m sure many a blues player have used some of Rory’s techniques in some way. R.I.P.

Rory passed away on June 14th, 1995.. Not June 5th.. I just thought you'd want to know the correct date. I love Rory forevermore.. the superb, wonderful, amazingly talented Liam Rory Gallagher.. Angel Rory.

Moved to the Netherlands in the mid seventies and was fortunate to see one of his last concerts in Rotterdam in the mid 90’s. Sadly he passed away shortly afterwards !

Great video. Good raw talent. The only problem with this, and the video of Taste that followed it for me, is that it hardly ever occurred to the camera man to focus on Rory's hands. Great to hear him talk, though. One of life's unassuming gentlemen. For Rory it was all about the music.

What an amazing, stormin' version of the Freddy King song 'Tore Down', absolutely brilliant. Have heard this by Freddy, Clapton and a few other bands but this is very different and IMHO vastly superior. Rare to see this line up. Rod De'Ath did join Rory's band shortly after this gig and just after the group was expanded to a four piece, with the addition of keyboard player Lou Martin. They both joined from the British band Killing Floor. Rory's 25th anniversary is on Sunday 14th June 2020. I miss his gigs so much.

There will be a time in history that Rory will be acknowledged as one of the top ten blues rock guitarists of all time. This will be at a time when the past commercial critics will no longer be relevant and the body of work that Rory put out there will have stood the test of time.
