There is a find and replace tool on Family Tree Maker. Do control F or go to edit find and replace. Then uncheck everything except places.

I think early on Ancestry should have made town, county and state as separate data fields. They should have also created a nickname field.

Then they would have to make this universal for all countries somehow. And how about historical place names. I have family in places that has switched both country and going from a historical administrative area to a modern one. This is a hard nut to crack.

That's not really the same thing that RootsMagic has unless we're talking about two different parts of the platform.

I haven't gotten that far with comparisons. It was something I had hoped to get to in 2022, but my family had medical emergencies this summer that derailed many of my plans. Thus, I tend to focus on some issue by issue comparisons rather than an entire analysis of the programs.

Country variation is also huge. FTM has a strong US focus in the maps and other countries vary wildly. eg places in Ireland (republic) are pretty good, but Northern Ireland is abymsal. Even if the placename is staring you in the face on their map, it's not in the list - very common. NZ is pretty good, places here Australia are terrible. I also find the use of the US placename format blindly used elsewhere to be really annoying as we have to manually remove all of the electoral divisions from place names, they're completely separate items here & never used outside of an election but FTM use them as equivalent to a US county (we don't have counties). Hours of fun.

In the past I used FTM, but for a lot of reasons I wanted to move to RM9. However, my online tree is mostly Ancestry today. When trying to use RM9 with ancestry , the suggestion is bulk uploads and downloads. If you have a lot of source citations, though, and on ancestry these come with image links etc., when you bulk download and attempt to bulk upload back into ancestry. You invariably wind up with duplicate source citations, decoupled citations, etc. It would be really nice to have a video comparing the two tools in regards to how you sync to an existing ancestry tree and an explanation of these issues. You have had videos that touched on this I think, but I have never seen anyone cover the duplicate source citations that happen, or losing the links to images that happens in ancestry when you bulk upload/download.

Oh the citations. I've avoided making videos about syncing citations because no software has a good handle on it. Since I don't want to put out too much negativity, I have just avoided the topic all together.

I wish there was a major Foundation study like that to encourage historians to come forward as so much has already been lost. And then compile what is already documented (but still unknown to the rest of us due to lack of access) into some kind of useable database genealogists could use. I think the website trackuback has the right idea, just needs to be something like that in our regular software somehow. Just had a thought - this would also be great for Google Earth to have historical timeline maps.

  • @FamilyHistoryFanatics

I think I understand what you're saying. It would be nice for historians and genealogists to work together to match historical place names with modern ones. Then, if each company would track both in their genealogy databases (or at least link historical places to modern ones), then we can stop fighting about what place names to use and stop spending time cleaning up the place names.

Please help!!! Years ago I had the Family Tree Maker program. We're talking years ago when we still used huge discs to put it into our computers. Well that computer crashed and the discs did not work on the next computer, for the next or the next etc. So I have been without a genealogy program in my computer for many years. I tried to find another program but my problem is the ones you download from the internet seem to all be connected to the internet. At this point in time, I only a software that keeps all the information on my computer unless I choose to share it on the internet. I don't like the idea of everything I enter into my genealogy program just automatically being sent out to the internet for the whole world to see before I'm ready to share it. Can you please tell me which is the best software for this? I know you probably get tons of comments everyday and I really hope you see this one because I really need your help.

RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker do not have to automatically sync with your Ancestry account. And only RootsMagic can write to FamilySearch, but it's a manual, fact by fact update that you do. No automatic updates to that website. Only one program writes to MyHeritage and no tree directly writes to Findmypast, WikiTree, or Geni. So... although you CAN easily share your information with online trees, you can turn off the syncing option with your trees. If you're worried about adding the wrong things to your computer or your online tree, I would recommend RootsMagic (they have a free version, which is so nice). Ensure you've turned on syncing to Ancestry. Then whenever you want to update either your FamilySearch or Ancestry tree, RootsMagic guides you person by person to which facts you want to bring from your online tree to your computer or the other way around.

You can copy and paste from Ancestry to FamilySearch and not use RootsMagic if you'd like to save money. This method does have it's draw backs. You can use RootsMagic to update both trees, something I explain in this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIyEttyjZrrNobQ.html For the combined RM/FTM place name strategy, I'm saving that for channel members.

Gramps has a lot of great plugins and is free to use. This would be my go to program if there was sync up with Ancestry and FS. Unfortunately, free means they do not have access to the private Ancestry API for sync and whoever was working on the FS sync removed the software from github.
