Go to www.learntreehab.com and download a copy of our new eBook just released this season! The ideas presented here are designed to inform homeowners and help them understand where to focus money and resources during their next tree evaluation project. There are lots of preservation based approaches out there that do not involve tree removal and debris disposal. We discuss some fundamental approaches to tree health and maintenance that can be applied during any phase of homeownership. Pre-existing native trees, planted trees, volunteer trees, and large heritage trees will be the primary subjects in this book. We talk about things like identifying critical areas for improvement and upgrade. Where to focus resources during each phase of preservation action. How to evaluate progress and determine next steps based on budget and seasonal requirements. These are the practices that we’ve used during the last two and half decades of working with trees.

Why did you stop at 12 inches on the first tree? I still didn't see the root flare exposed.

Many of the root collars we find during the initial excavation are buried to the point where the dirt has nowhere to go. We have to inform the client that to remove the fill dirt would require a place for the dirt, and often a return trip for specific trees that need addition excavation and aeration.

@Earthmasters08 It sounds like your saying if you remove enough dirt, there's no where to put it in the yard without just making a mess of the yard. Is this what your saying? If this is the case, even if you don't remove a lot of dirt, where does it go? With making a hole, it seems the only way to dispose is to just scatter it in the yard or haul it away. I haven't started doing this yet, but I always thought all the dirt you remove you have to haul away. So with that, you'd have to use 1 vehicle for pulling the air spade machine, and another vehicle to pull a trailer to haul the dirt away in to the dumpyard.
