Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

Steve and Sara, I think there might be a couple of solutions to your chair rail issue lying flat to the wall. 1. Use shims to take up the gap. Either wood or styrofoam like material. It's the stuff that some ceiling medallions are made of. You would try to insert with the narrow end going downward behind the rail and trim off the excess at the bottom. You paint them and it will be far less fiddly than trying to shape the rail to the uneven wall. 2. Terry and Ash at LaLacelle made their own molding using some kind of poured latex like material that was actually tons better than it sounds. Personally, I would use shims. I cannot believe how perfect that wallpaper and paint color goes so well in that room! Bravo and brava!

I think you should do mini models of each room as you renovate and then you can make a doll house of your chateau. Now that would be joy.

A BIG CANADIAN CONGRATULATIONS!!! Just a stunning job, and LOVE Vincent's reaction, as well as the puppy's. If you haven't found a solution to the wood chair rail moulding gaps, there are (not so bad as many might think) plastic or polystyrene trims that easily bend and contour to even the worst wall conditions. We've had to use similar even in brand new construction homes. Terry and Ash from Chateau Lalacelle have used them incredibly successfully in the restoration of their property. GREAT JOB to you both!

Hey guys, nice job. Look up the work at the Chateau de Lalacel , instead of wood they buy trims of some plastic flexibility material that makes easier for them to apply to funky walls. They go over with the color they want and it looks like wood

You could add a quarter-round piece of trim to the top (and bottom as needed) since caulk won’t fill enough. Once painted it should look fine. Try a couple different diameters but i think 1/4” should do it.

No panic! There may be a solution for the chair rail. Drill holes in the rail and the wall and put plugs in the wall. The use long screws and screw the rail tight. Make sure the screws sink a bit into the rail. Then fill the holes over the screws, sand, paint. Make sure to use the glue on the rail as well for extra strength. I did the same once, worked perfectly!

My suggestion for the dado rail gaps: Add masking tape on the wallpaper at the top and bottom of the dado rail then fill the gap with expanding foam. I’d then trim the foam level with the rail once dry and then paint the foam to match the dado rail.

  • @Andrewtafelklavier
    @Andrewtafelklavier7 ай бұрын

Make wooden or mdf shims by fitting a plank accurately to the irregular surface to get the profile then cutting off the portion that will be used to pack out the back of the dado rail. This will be glued to the back of the dado. Another method would’ve to kerf cut the dado rail halfway through from the back with a fine saw at regular intervals so it bends easily. The kerfs are later filled before painting.

I think the room turned out beautifully. I also think that your chair railing could benefit from some extra depth and dimention. It seems out of proportion when taking in the height of the room and the scale of the paper. I would add another horizontal piece, perhaps another 3-4" to increase the total vertical height of your chair rail. I would also bump it out into the room slightly, perhaps 1" to 1.5" this would allow you to shim the entire length of chair railing parallel to the wall, as if the wall was straight. Then you could scribe the top piece to match the wall, and caulk across the bottom as this would not be as noticable. It's hard for me to discribe, but you would have three pieces of trim total that act as one. Two verticle to the wall and one horizontal to the wall on top scribed to fit the wall.

I LOVE the wallpaper! The room looks beautiful 😍 But you should consider, changing the name. Chateax don't have Cafés - they have diningrooms and breakfast rooms 😉 If you notice, Vincente even called it the breakfast room😁 Now, the room really just needs a nice guilt mirror (could even be round or oval, if that means no decapitated birds😉), over the fireplace, and a romantic, guilt mantel clock! 😊 And I will have to agree with several comments, that the breakfast room is now the prettiest room in the Chateau. But... That just wont do... The Dining room should certainly compete for that title, so I really hope Vincente had some ideas and inspiration for that 😁😁😁

@@mariahoulihan9483 If its called the "café", that would probably make sense- but I have actually not heard them say that either. To me, because of all the storage, I would think it was actually a butlers pantry - but it does seem very large for that. And I don't think it has been altered. But anyway, that is why I went with Breakfast room. Especially with the new, beautiful paint and wallpaper! And it would make sense for a Chateau, to have a seperate dining- and breakfast room 🙂

Regarding the wonky wall where you are trying to apply chair moulding to the wall. Think like a seamstress that you are. Can you make small slit cuttings to the back of the moulding to allow it to bend to the surface of the wall? Like the small cuttings you make when sewing a curve. Then possibly fill with wood putty. Good luck.

Awesome papering skills. Mine are average but many years ago we went to help 2 friends wallpaper their lounge. We prepped the walls etc and measured up and cut the first drop on a pasting table in the next room. Suddenly realised Christine was missing. We found her in the 'cutting room' looking very triumphant and with a stack of wallpaper beside her. "I have cut all the rolls to the right size so they are all ready for you" Indeed they were all the same length but it was a patterned wallpaper with an 18 inch repeat! 😢 Cue much cussing and swapping round. We only had to buy 2 new rolls in the end! I will never forget it though!

You should be darn proud of yourselves! That room is absolutely stunning! With respect to the Dado rail, could you slice the wood from behind in small sections (where it wouldn't show on top) vertically to your wall to allow it to "flex" to the wall surface? Otherwise, I'd say make a mold and use the latex product that Terry and Ash used to make a flexible molding. A lot more work, but then it would be "perfect." I'm so glad you got rid of that lavender. I like lavender, but it has it's place and it was just too much of a dichotomy. The green is so much more quiet! And of course, the lamp now goes with the room!

I used to have tall glasses with that Grecian design. Amazing! Stunning! Very welcoming for a symposium!

Congratulations! Little Green should buy your program to use for other buyers of their patterned paper! It sure pays to know the tools one can utilize to be a perfectionist!

I’ve used Ekena brand moulding here is US that is more flexible. Alternative is to scribe a flat piece to the wall and mount your trim to that- fill the top seam with wood filler/caulk and paint. It Would result in a greater projection from the wall and be painstaking but could work. Flexible moulding seems the easiest route. The room looks stunning.

FIll the chair rail gaps with painter's caulk and paint to match. No biggie. Wallpaper looks great, BTW!

A more substantial chair rail and perhaps the use of a small cove molding to cover gaps.

I thought of shims too with the railing. You have a tremendous "resource person" ask Amaury at Chateau LaLande. See if he has any tricks up his carpenter's sleeve. Doesn't hurt to ask.

You could use polyurethane trim that will bend to the wave in the wall and be light weight and easy to glue on. Ash & Terry have used it in their 400 Suite in their chateau and it looks beautiful.

You should be proud of yourselves! Could you use a small wallpaper or even a fabric steamer on the moldings to give them a little more flex? I imagine the two of you having meals in this room when it's just the two of you. ❤

You can cut little lines across the back of the dado rail to make it bend. Sort of like sewing a curved seam.

Put a backing board behind it to fill in the space. glue backing board to the wall then glue chair railing to the backing board no gap and less to fill.
