I have seen other rain screen try builds where they nailed the furring strips at a 45 degree angle to the slope. That gives up-slope airflow, and cross-slope support for steel, all in one layer. Would that have worked for this build?

Thanks Corbet great alternate to the 45degree method. Just one question about the sturdi strips, how well do they hold up to the heat under a metal roof, will they soften and compress under the pressure of the screw holding the 1x4 battens? One thought .... do you think a fully threaded screw and a counter sunk hole would be better as the wood batten would not compress the sturdi strip as the screw is drawn tight to the deck.... I will be installing a metal roof on my self build and like you suffer from paralysis of analysis lol..

Haha, good question- this is not my first build with these Sturdi-Strips. They’re on the TinyLab roof too, and no, they’ve given us no issues with softening, shifting etc. You want a tight fit, so don’t worry about pulling the connections tight- you can’t hurt these things. The screw head would bust thru the wood before that happened.

Corbin-why did you choose Cora ent versus Benjamin Obydyke mesh of a dimple product (delta MS etc)

I had experience with Cor-a-Vent before, and knew it paired well with Mento.

I don't understand the need for the sturdi strips. Wouldn't wood work as well? After all, you are attaching wood strips to the sturdi strips. Is it to get just that little extra ventilation? I understand the cora vent at the top and bottom, just not those strips running vertically.

It would have to be GT pressure-treated, which means chemicals potentially leaching onto the mento- want to avoid that. Plastic is tried and true for this purpose.

@@HomePerformance what about the wood strips you are attaching to the sturdi strips? They aren't pressure treated. Is it because they have an air gap beneath them so they don't need to be?

Right, they won’t be sitting against a wet surface, since they’re elevated.

Were those 10d Commons in the strapping? Been curious about the venting details, thanks for showing your approach. I'm in an extreme high fire zone and don't think it gets mentioned enough that for people in similar high risk areas,

Or you can build out of fireproof material but yes an air gap can increase fire risk.

Great concept with vented rain screen. Curious why you didn't any exterior insulation on the roof?

@@HomePerformance I know this is old now but do you remember what your standard roof insulation was rated at and what zone are you in? Did the fact that you did a vented rainscreen roof decrease the need for exterior roof insulation? Ive always understood the roof insulation to be more important than the walls. Sorry for the paragraph, just trying to learn as much as I can before I start my build here in zone 5

You mean in one layer, I imagine. Here the same effect is achieved. My question with Matt’s way: how do you make certain you’re hitting the joists every time, and do you use continuous butyl like this method? More material on the diagonal.

@@HomePerformancedepends on the underlayment thickness. 5/8 & 3/4 is as good as hitting a stud. Also I would screw the furring strips down. Nails are for shear force, if anything in highwind those will be subjected to lifting force which is not what nails excel at.

Have fun knocking on exterior board insulation to find your trusses.

@@HomePerformance I watched it. And don't assume that I didn’t before you get sparky. You may not be using exterior insulation, but CI is becoming the norm for building codes including roofs.

Could you do a self sealing demo with that tape to show us?

Cool product, but way cheaper to just use regular furring strips or ripped plywood to make the regular battons, and trim with the coavent sv3/sv5

What is the spacing for the 1x4 furrowing strips, 16" on center?

Not every nail hits solid wood- on any crew in the world.

Just use Sharkskin underlayment.

That Screen over that plastic Cora vent will clog within a short period of time then you are not allowing airflow. Even worse the condensation will not be able to escape or the heat. Bad move. You didn’t do your research

When the sun hits this roof it will heat the air and bring in new fresh air. This thing will thermosyphon quite well. I'm sure one day he will be able to show a thermo image of air leaving the roof caps/vents.
