For me,the Buddy Rich Big Band was always about the music, and this is one of the best I have heard in a long time. All professional musicians who understand Big Band music and played together to make it so exciting to hear! This is the Buddy Rich concept on how a Big Band should sound. Excellent charts with exciting soloist to make the music come alive and always play at the highest level possible. So many outstanding soloist like Nigel Hitchcock on tenor sax,Simon Gardner on 2nd trumpet who played with Buddy, Bob Bowlby on 1st alto who also played with Buddy, Matt Harris with his great feel on piano and a great arranger for Buddy Rich all made this an exciting concert at Ronnie Scott`s. Plus the fact that you have Eric Miyashiro on lead trumpet, and the solid and swinging-rocking Laurence Cottle on bass, this is what is needed to make it a great Big Band the way Buddy would of wanted! Of course no drummer could replace Buddy Rich, but Dave Weckl and Gregg Potter in their own style did play to what they thought would fit the music and give it the drive in the Buddy "style". So wonderful to hear rare Buddy Rich charts like "Hookin It" which Gegg Potter played and the "Rotten Kid" that Dave Weckl performed. Outstanding job of singing by Cathy Rich on the very rare "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" from the album Sounds Of 66 that Sammy Davis Jr. with the Buddy Rich Big Band recorded live at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. It was always about the music first for Buddy Rich. I saw the Buddy Rich Big Band live from 1969 to 1986 and the reason to keep going to see the world`s greatest drummer was because of that Big Band he had.I learned so much from watching and hearing him on how to play music and drive a Big Band. The reason I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is to make sure this great music will not die out. I honor Buddy with every concert I do by playing the rare Buddy charts like Porgy & Bess, The Trolley Song, Apples, Step Right Up, Silver Threads Among The Blues, Hello I Love You, Harco Shuffle, Winding Way, More Soul, Mr.Lucky and so many more because this great music must be heard today. I have put these performance I did with my Ken Loomer Big Band on KZread so the people will have a chance to hear these great Buddy charts again. Thanks to Cathy Rich we get to hear a world class Big Band play the amazing music of Buddy Rich. Now I`m inspired to keep my Big Band going and play these great Buddy Rich charts, along with new charts from new arrangers who in the Buddy way will make the music so exciting to hear. Lets celebrate the 100th year of the birth of Buddy Rich by keeping the sound of a Big Band alive for a long time!

I must say that seeing this show live was quite an experience and the only thing that really upset me was the attitude of Greg Potter on his interview. Age and Maturity is the issue with the Buddy Rich band. Dave Weckl changed the whole bands attitude as soon as he came on board as I watched these guys play 4 separate times in 2 days and then to listen to those Crashing symbols of Greg Potter and to top it off was his Buddy Rich Wannabe attitude with cornball jokes and I guess what he thought in his mind was Buddy Rich style. Well it was not the Buddy Rich that I knew. I am now 64 and saw a lot of years with Buddy Rich and a lot of Names here I recognise as we get older. One thing that Cathy Rich said was that her father was getting better with age. From 18 Months to almost 70 that is a long time to keep learning and let us all face the Fact that Buddy is with God as Cathy Rich said on camera that her fathers talent was bestowed on him from God. The man is not alive. There is no drummer that will ever be like him again. I do not like bashing another person drummer or not. Greg Potter in my opinion is a rock drummer who met Cathy Rich on a dating site. Because of this encounter Greg Potter became the drummer of the Buddy Rich band. It is plain to see this is it not? But I saw a swelled ego that needed to go. Greg Potter is not anywhere close to the one Buddy Rich. Greg, what was the need to beat the kit to pieces? He needed no microphone that is for sure. After the first song on this Video at Ronnie Scott's Mr. Potter goes into some stupid remark about timing in the score in which the band was wrong and Greg Potter was very very right. This embarrassment to the band was uncalled for. But this is where Dave Weckl was spot-on with the swing and he was professional about his work and he had humility and the band see,s that. Buddy Rich is Dead. But I stand behind Cathy Rich and Greg Potter and the effort the people at Ronnie Scott's that put this memorable contribution to Buddy Rich together. But Greg, get professional and get a haircut learn from Dave Weckl. Spot-on to Ronnie Scotts and The Buddy Rich big band with the some of the worlds best brass players. With no shame from Brisbane QLD Australia. G'day.

It is usually out of my deepest respect for Buddy that I tend to ignore Greg Potter and the disservice he does to Buddy's legacy. However, my appreciation for Dave Weckl grew four pegs on the ladder today. Thankfully, someone else noticed just how much the band came alive once they got a real drummer - one who played with taste, dynamics and finesse, in "the driver's chair." If you doubt it, go back and look at the change in the band member's demeanor once he started playing. They could hear themselves, each other, and the band swung! A totally different band. Damn, once Weckl sat down this was truly enjoyable! My hope is probably in vain, but I truly hope that Potter was sitting in the wings taking copious notes on how a band is to be backed, especially one who plays this well and with great charts. He may have Buddy's drums, band book and daughter, but he does the band a disservice with his excessive overplaying. And, with as many other comments that keep saying the same thing in other clips with the band, I don't understand why he won't sit down and just play time, and stop bashing the ever living snot out of the drums like Bam Bam with a set of clubs on every tune.

Dave Weckl played beautifully and the band sounded great! It's painful for me to watch Mr. Potter pound the hell out of the drums...he has poor taste, doesn't have a clue about what big band drumming is all about. Potter isn't listening, he isn't driving the band and he certainly isn't swinging. He should also lose his dumb Buddy impersonation between tunes...he's not funny and is making a fool out of himself!

Buddy was really a gem wasn't he? Musically he was like the Beethoven of jazz. Very enjoyable effort here to preserve the spirit of the man and his music. Much better than other tribute concerts I've seen on KZread which seemed to miss the mark, especially with regard to the level of energy necessary to pull a concert like this off. Bravo to all involved. Great to see band members who I used to see at all those Disneyland concerts way back in the 70s and 80s too. Thanks again Cathy for keeping all this alive. The music will never die. Salute from out here in Las Vegas! :-)

A must to skip over to @1:18:08 when the tasteful and great DAVE WECKL blessedly takes over. I went to a LA JAZZ Big Band festival a few years ago, and Cathy’s BR Band played a set. I really wanted to get up and walk out to clear my ears: Greg banging away at FFFFF, I couldn't hear a thing, what a nightmare. Oh well, I’m sure he’s a nice guy otherwise. It's the only tribute performance I've seen that TRULY captures the spirit of what Buddy did. Gregg's performance on the other hand is probably the worst one I've ever seen in any Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. I think the remarks about Potter a bit harsh. Two totally different drummers that you can't and shouldn't compare.

great show..I think 1:49:00 is the coolest thing Ive seen Dave do, ala Buddy. his smile near the end and the band says it all.

Buddy was the Man! -- speed, power, dynamism, and Killer fills. Weckl is excellent. Just more subtle, but no less directed; buzz single roll.

Buddy could have pulverized the kit every song, but he didn't. Despite being an absolute monster on the drums, he never overplayed it, there was always an appropriate level of restraint. Dave Weckl has that same sensibility.

Dave Weckl is just amazing on this. So tasteful and musical. The other guy, I couldn't listen to. Buddy would have thrown him through the nearest window. I hate to criticize but he should stick to a style that he's familiar with and maybe he would sound good.

As a drummer and a lover of Buddy Rich I have to say Dave plays with the same grace, style and ease that Buddy had. No offense to Gregg but he is too flashy and just doesn't seem to get what it is all about. If you listen to the 2 drummers without watching, it is so easy to not only tell the difference but to hear how the band sounds and plays to the two drummers. With Dave it almost like Buddy is there, when Gregg plays it is about Gregg and the band happens to be there. Dave also has multiple dynamics just like Buddy, with Gregg it is just loud very little dynamics. Also you can tell that Dave respects and loves the band and serves the music , Gregg well he's is just glad that he is there.
