If Ronaldinho was better at everything then why did he have a worse goal to game ratio, a worse assist ratio, and a worse free kick ratio; among many more aspects... He scored 20 free kicks for Barca in five seasons, while Messi when he began taking them regularly from the 11/12 season onwards scored 50 in 10 seasons. In fact, Messi in just 3 seasons between 16-17 to 18/19 scored 20 free kicks for Barca, which was the same amount as Ronaldinho managed in those five seasons at Barca.

COMPLETELY agreed - It is Martinez's greatest failure to not convince Ronaldo to relinquish even the free kicks, when you have Fernandes AND Silva. It show he is completely spineless when it comes to Ronaldo.

Funny, I do agree Ronaldo should not always take a free kick. However: The last time Manchester United were to score directly from a free-kick was Cristiano Ronaldo against Norwich in the Premier League on the 16th of April 2023.22 Ronaldo scored another great one in October for al Nassr. In fact I did see other Portuguese players take a free kick with Ronaldo on the pitch. That is usually when the free kick is on the right handside of the goal. Usually it was Rafael Guerreiro who took them. But he never scored. Also Bruno has taken a few shots while CR7 was absent. He never scored either.

Craig is 100%. I’m a Portuguese supporter. Been one for as long as I can remember. I’m loyal to my team and not any individual talent and it breaks my heart to see such a gifted squad being held hostage by an aging, deluded superstar. The amount of free kicks that he takes with an abysmal success rate is inexcusable. I wish Bruno Fernandes or Bernardo Silva would have the guts to step in, but we know that’s not going to happen. Ronaldo said this will thankfully be his last Euros, I just hope we don’t suffer this display in the next World Cup. My blood pressure wouldn’t be able to take it.

no they didnt even require the keeper to take a step. He only goes for power now on every strike for some wow factor from people who dont closely follow sport or havent been lifelong followers. Thats always easiest ball to defend it takes skill to bend the ball or pass t into corner. Fact that hes the strker means if hes taking free kick theres no threat ni box to head ball in. He cant score only one in his career was against spain that went up and overwall. Bruno and bernardo will never go for goal thats what most "team" players and creators do, but at least force defenders to thiink and the keeper. Plus you have your striker in box to actually be a threat much more likely to score thatn shoot from spot thats why nobody has scored its math they are setting up team and strikers/defenders in box. This is youth level tactics its basics. It was a 4-2-3-1 formation bruno and leao id beating there man would only encounter ronaldo in there way anyhow and the two centerbacks he just stays in between. Not a true strker so never developed the skill to hld u play with back togoal like a proper striker. He doesnt drag defenders out of box so a bruno or leao can score or create. Watch morata for spain its why yamal and niko williams have so much space and a chance to score. Not only has ronaldo struggled but they have adopted a formation that if hes not scoring nobody else can either. Its a joke. He doesnt press either so portugal dont gain possession ni advantageous areas instead they have to play from out back and try to break down a low block every time. Its the stupidist system ive ever seen in 35 years watching especially from a team that scored so much in qualifyinig 36-2 they outscored teams all ranked similar to who they have played. Bruno had 9 goals and assists but because he rarely played wth ronaldo and was one when best pass s open pass and everyone was threat to score so they are so difficult to defend. They are one dimensoinal now with this formatoin not to mentiion all other issues lke playing full time in losing effort in non necessary group match when he planned to play 120 minutes in knockouts. Its all indefensible. This is embarrassing and and all Portuguese fans are suffering unnecessarily.

The proof that ronaldo crying was all about himself and not about Portugal is because when he scored the 2nd penalty he went and apologized to the fans DURING an active penalty shootout that could still have gone either way. The last thing on the fans and the players minds at this time in what happened before but rather if they will win the shootout or not. He cares more about him and his penalty miss rather than the team possibly getting knocked out of the tournament. The penalty shootout was still on a knifes edge, tensions were super high and everything was on the line but in his head after that second penalty he was happy because he redeemed himself, while portugal could have still lost!

And moreover, in 2019 during the nation's league group stage, Ronaldo asked to be dismissed from national duty to better focus on adapting to juventus. They gave him permission. Portugal played for almost a year without him, and they played the best, most fluid team football that I've ever seen Portugal play since 2008. As a football fan I always appreciated Bale's shooting technique, and I would have liked to see him having scored some more free kicks in his career, but Cristiano took so many opportunities from him, when Cristiano was clearly the inferior free kick taker. I’ve always loved Cristiano I just think he’s aging poorly. His glory days are clearly behind him but his pride just won’t let him accept it. When I started playing club I always knew the older guys were better but I always told myself you’d be nuts to think they would ever beat me to the ball in pace and outlast me in stamina. Cr7 is 39. Just looking at that on paper is completely nuts. He should let his teammates grow into his role.

Ronaldo was about these things and without them, he is no longer the threat he once was. Without ronaldo and pepe portugal dropped out of world cup 22 and it did them no favors and everyone said leave ronaldo in the squad as what else wrong could happen you already lost. Have these players took 60 free kicks in major tournaments and scored 1? What about 6 free kicks in 1 game including one he was meant to cross not aim for corner flag. His conversion rate on free kicks is one of the worst, it’s all about me me me, proving that on the left side of box shot when he should have crossed. It is funny how much is being covered on this so called washed up, past his use by date and past prime player. This shows that CR7 is still a brand to reckon with. How the team reacted after the saved penalty (not missed) shows they respect and value him. A tired ageing CR7 on the field still poses a thread to the backline. I hope Martinez plays him a sub next match .

Ronaldo has as good of a chance or better to make the PK than any other Portugal player. I have not issue with Ronaldo taking the PK.

Ronaldo should be dropped. But the reality is that he will play and take all free kicks and penalties. I agree with Frank that no-one in the Portugal team will have the gut to step up against him, just because he is Ronaldo. Craig mentioned Bernardo Silva with a champion league as if that has any weight against Ronaldo records. Among all people that played with Ronaldo, perhaps Ramos, as the Spanish captain at Madrid, had what it took to step up against Ronaldo, but he didn’t (to be fair to Ramos, Ronaldo was a beast back then).

He was arguably the best free kick taker in his early years. But from 2015 or so, his output has dropped dramatically.

The best player in the world has 1 penalty goal this tournament (Mbappe). no one is talking about him shows that these haters are just hating Ronaldo. Let him play every single minute. He missed a penalty, why not give to Bruno. Harry Kane missed the penalty against france that got his team out of the world cup. Mbappe missed the penalty Switzerland. I have no issue with him missing the penalty. It’s the fact that he burst into tears while the game was still in play and on the line, that bothered me. He’s supposed to be the captain of the team and when his teammates, some of them 15 years his junior had to console him, it just didn’t paint Ronaldo in a flattering light.
