I was at this performance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He was the perfect Romeo: from the moment he climbed over the gate, he had the audience in the palm of his hand. This is an exquisitely romantic portrayal. Note the French 'r' is guttural, not rolled, which make his him sound even more sensual.

Watched this 28 years ago for the first time. HAve watched/ listened to it many times since then and still think it will never be sung/ performed better. Perfect Juliette also despite some challenges. supporting the high notes . Alagna was obviously setting the pace and perhaps Leontina could have used a second or two more to. Breathe. J'ai été très souvent assez critique envers Roberto Alagna. Tout simplement parce qu'il a voulu interpréter des Rôles hors de sa Portée et même qui pouvait détruire Sa Voix. Seulement,ici,on assiste à un MIRACLE. Roberto Alagna est à son Zénith (ainsi que Leontina Vaduva d'ailleurs). Il a non seulement LA voix (le Timbre,la Diction,le Style)mais QUELLE INTERPRÉTATION !! C'est digne du Roméo et Juliette de Zefirelli...Et je pèse mes mots. ! Il est LE Grand TENOR Français que nous avons attendu si longtemps. Il était l'héritier des Jobin,Vanzo,Thill.......Aussi loin que me porte ma mémoire,je ne me souviens pas avoir été autant bouleversé que par cette Représentation de Rêve......Un Moment de Grâce......

Une des plus belles production de cette oeuvre avec une distribution éblouissante !

@@abcdefgh-db1to Franco Corelli ? Certes son diminuendo final est époustouflant dans la plupart des vidéos sur KZread mais il y massacre le français. Phrasé, intonations, tout manque ! Aucune subtilité ! On dirait qu'il ne comprend pas ce qu'il chante. Pourtant, je sais qu'il parlait français.

@@sylviebasyl2835 Oui je sais mais Corelli a quelque chose de magique, en fait il chante le rôle à l'italienne, avec puissance et passion. C'est pas quelque chose qui est pas vraiment présent dans le chant français et qui donc n'était probablement pas voulu par Gounod mais moi ça ne me choque pas, au contraire. Alors certes la diction du français est mauvaise avec un accent à couper au couteau mais je m'y fais personnellement et le diminuendo à la fin vaut bien toute la carrière de certains ténors actuels ! Après la version qui respecte probablement plus le texte et qui reste époustouflante au niveau vocal est probablement celle de Georges Thill

@@abcdefgh-db1to C'est drôle, tout ce que vous aimez dans l'interprétation de F. Corelli, c'est ce que je n'aime pas. Un peu trop de puissance et de passion pour interpréter un tout jeune homme qui vient de rencontrer l'amour.j Thill, oui. Mais , j'en ai un peu marre d'entendre parler des morts. Ils ne remonteront pas sur scène demain. Et je suis pour que l'opéra reste un art vivant. Pas un truc qu'on écoute sur des vieux 33 tours tout seul chez soi (j'ai encore une platine et des disques)... Je n'ai pas l'habitude de comparer les chanteurs, encore moins de dire que l'un est meilleur que l'autre. Ça n'a pas de sens pour moi. Il y a juste des interprétations que je préfère, des timbres de voix qui m' émeuvent. Je peux tout autant apprécier Corelli en Manrico, Del Monaco en Otello, Vanzo en Nadir, Gigli et Caruso et j'en passe qu'Alagna dans le répertoire français en général (sauf peut-être en Nadir)

This makes me weep, as does the story of Romeo et Juliette. I saw the Met HD broadcast on Jan. 21...also quite gorgeous. But for my money, Alagna makes a more believable and heart-breaking Romeo. Thank you for posting.

Janice, I saw the Met HD recently and while it was very well done and I thought it in many respects admirable, I don't think anyone touches Alagna's performance in this role.

Yes... I think that I have never been so deep moved on seeing an Opéra. To my opinion it was stronger that the play by Shakespeare,because the Music. And of Course Alagna and Vaduva... Both have just be marvelous,incredible,they are Roméo and Juliette for the eternity

Thank you so much! I enjoyed this so much that I bought a copy of the entire opera! I love the hearing the French lyrics but seeing the words in English made me love it all the more. Gounod's music and Alagna's voice were made for each other, so heart-breakingly beautiful! What an incredible evening it must have been to actually have been at that performance!

This was shown on British television, not sure whether it was live. We knew that a star was born, unfortunately he never reached these heights again. Amazing as his wife had just died.

Nous le lui avons dit, il ne veut pas entendre raison, dommage, nous possédons l'un des plus grands ténor au monde, il passe légèrement à coté...les italiens ont eu Luciano Pavarotti, comme figure mythique, nous aurions peu avoir la notre en sa personne......son Roméo est la référence absolue du chef-d'oeuvre de Gounod

Absolutely superb. What does he do to get that top B flat? - Nothing. And I think that is the secret of singing well. Don't make a huge effort to push notes out, just let them out of their own acccord and above all GET OUT OF THEIR WAY.

Disclaimer, this is my opinion...It seems that singing different works in different languages as repertoire for all aspiring/ practicing classical singers is the culture... However, I find that hearing singers singing in a language they flently speak/ mother tongue OR a language they truly master makes a total difference...Especially if I am to appreciate the message in words/song. Even more a poignant aria. On the other hand, anyone attempt/ sing anything they like and there can be somethings to be discovered or appreciated. Alagna is singing this and I believe it totally. The beauty of his art. The mild inflections here and there, the punctuation and emotion are all there...I believe, I observe that it is very difficult to convey in a foreign language...something is simply amiss. If one wants to focus solely on voice and technique? Fine. But the more I listen to arias in languages I can understand, I find the the linguistic aspect really separates the singers in 2 categories : those who sound too far away from the language, the meaning and changes in meaning and those who do.Anyone? Wooohhh Alagna sings this with exquisite delivery. I keep coming back😊

Je ne veux pas être nostalgique, je sais que la voix est chose fragile et changeante, mais pourquoi Alagna a-t-il voulu d'un répertoire qui l'oblige à s'abîmer, quand il aurait pu être un digne successeur de Vanzo et Kraus? Cette video est comme l'image d'un trésor perdu. Il est beau comme un dieu et il chante pareil. Alors Calaf, Otello, Radames, A QUOI BON?? quand nous perdons Romeo, Nadir, Werther?

Tout à fait d'accord ..j’aurai pu l’écrire ...il devait rester dans les emplois de 1/2 caractère et ne pas aborder trop lourd pour jlui ...fuidité , ligne de chant ..comprehension du texte ..je suis scandalisé car les références sur YT oublient simplement le plus grand ..THILL ECOUTEZ LA CAVATINE ET LA SCENE DU TOMBEAU ....CHANTE PAR THILL .. ALAGNA est à un grand niveau comparé aux étoiles filantes actuelles comme VILLAZON curieux que sur le même air à une autre époque il soit démoli ...et bien sûr ressortent les idolâtres de J BJORLING dont le volume vocal passait mal l’orchestre selon des connaisseurs qui l’ont entendu souvent ...il ne manque que M LANZA ( 550 avis sur toute interprétation :on mélange les vrais chanteurs des icones préfabriquées aux voix trafiquées par les techniciens d 'Hollywood.....à 13 ans quand j’ai entendu la bande du GRAND CARUSO j’ai rigolé ... Sur YT un audireur dit d'ALAGNA qu'il " a la voix du bon dieu ..’’...curieusement une des premières réédition sur microsillon de THILL dans la guilde du disque ...en 1959 ... s'intitulait .."la voix du bon dieu " .. Eluzalyrics

And maybe Faust as well. I can hear him sing "Salut! Demeure chaste et pure." This Romeo is so heartbreakingly well-sung. (And he looks like Romeo as well.)
