Rome: Back-Street Riches

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2012 | In this third of three shows on the Eternal City, we'll explore this grand metropolis - so rich in art and culture - on a more intimate scale, delving into its back lanes and unheralded corners. Venturing through the crusty Trastevere district, visiting the historic Jewish Ghetto, and enjoying art treasures in a string of rarely visited churches, we uncover charms of hidden Rome that compete with its marquee sights. Part one: • Rome: Ancient Glory Part two: • Rome: Back-Street Riches #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #rome

Italy is a sort of emotional rescue and therapy for the common american guy , but the representation on media is often full of stereotypes. So usually american people are far to understand the real italian culture . Mr Steves does his best work to improve the situation .

I traveled for other european cities like London, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdm and Paris, but for me Rome is definitely unique. In Rome every stepwalk is a dip in the history of mankind, and you walk in streets and avenues from more than 2.000 years of history and enter in buildings who were part of the colossal Roman Empire. There is not a single person who is not hypnotized in front of the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi or The Vatican............ For me Rome and Athens are UNIQUE for sure

I am Italian and from my perspective the world outside is very beautiful! We Italians have a saying in this case, namely 'the neighbor's garden is always greener!' It is a matter of perspective, when you are always in the same place you tend to take everything for granted, so it would be right to have a dynamic life, to travel at least two or three times a year, so as not to acquire that tiredness. in perception, always renewing one's gaze and perception spiritually, having a similar approach to children!

A good rule of thumb if you want to avoid tourist traps in Rome: If a store, restaurant or cafe has ostentatious English signs or menus, avoid it. The best, authentic stuff, whether it's food, clothes, jewellry, pottery, etc. is found in places that are signed in Italiano only.

I was fortunate enough to study and travel all the capitals as the typical “starving student.” Believe me there are ways to cut Rick’s budgets to the bone. I was very selective about the museums and a short train ride out from the historical centers of all these cities made all the difference in food and lodging. Your experience will be priceless if you learn the language. I look back and realize I did sell everything I could as well as sell a horse and a motorcycle. Beans and rice and rice and beans helped me save. Just do it.

For me, Rome is truly UNIQUE! It has everything from delicious food, to beautiful views, from open air museums, and affordable hotel rooms. Rome is truly the birthplace of democracy, and you feel like you're in Europe with all these roman ruins and the Coliseum. If you're also spiritual, the Pope is there too. So it's certainly the most unique city in Europe.

I have been to Athens 3 times, Rome maybe 8 times, it's great for connecting flights to other European countries. I love both Rome and Athens, but I love the open space, the sunlight in Athens more. One thing I felt really safe to walk all over Rome at night was because there are police everywhere and I can ask for directions. Recently, I watch this UK program called "GINO ITALIAN ESCAPED " ITALIAN chef traveled all over lesser known cities/towns and cook traditional Italian cuisine, it made me wanna visit every coast of the "boot"👢 , especially the olive Grove

Just a little nitpicking here: in the carbonara you must use the "guanciale" (from the pork's cheek and neck) and not the "pancetta" (from the pork's belly). It's more tasty and flavoured (and it has more fats), often seasoned with garlic and herbs, and it is left to mature for more time than the pancetta, so it's usually more crusty when cooked.

This was awesome watching 2019, we lost so much to barbaric Germanic tribes, they've been menace to Europe ever since. Romans were so skilled at ensuring diverse agricultural practices, artificial farming techniques, and food preservation methods, through Empire the use of raw material from every corner. Indeed, their relative success is indicated by the fact that such a scale of food production would not be seen again in Europe until the 18th century CE.
