Rome: Back-Street Riches

Venturing through the crusty Trastevere district, visiting the historic Jewish Ghetto, and enjoying art treasures in a string of rarely visited churches, we uncover charms of hidden Rome that compete with its marquee sights. In Rome do as the Romans do ; and the world does . The magic of Roma , the capital of history and culture of the ancient times .It still works its spell on modern travellers !
Italy is a sort of emotional rescue and therapy for the common american guy , but the representation on media is often full of stereotypes. So usually american people are far to understand the real italian culture . Mr Steves does his best work to improve the situation .
I traveled for other european cities like London, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdm and Paris, but for me Rome is definitely unique. In Rome every stepwalk is a dip in the history of mankind, and you walk in streets and avenues from more than 2.000 years of history and enter in buildings who were part of the colossal Roman Empire. There is not a single person who is not hypnotized in front of the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi or The Vatican............ For me Rome and Athens are UNIQUE for sure

Totally agree, just a pity that there's a Nigerian around every corner trying to sell you something (like in Paris)
It’s so refreshing to see people back in 2014 actually enjoying themselves and not on their phones 24/7
The world is something, and Rome is something else.

I am Italian and from my perspective the world outside is very beautiful! We Italians have a saying in this case, namely 'the neighbor's garden is always greener!' It is a matter of perspective, when you are always in the same place you tend to take everything for granted, so it would be right to have a dynamic life, to travel at least two or three times a year, so as not to acquire that tiredness. in perception, always renewing one's gaze and perception spiritually, having a similar approach to children!
A good rule of thumb if you want to avoid tourist traps in Rome: If a store, restaurant or cafe has ostentatious English signs or menus, avoid it. The best, authentic stuff, whether it's food, clothes, jewellry, pottery, etc. is found in places that are signed in Italiano only.
My last visit to Rome, and the most enjoyable, my wife and I didn't do any sight seeing and just enjoyed Roman culture, eating drinking and listening to music. It was fantastic.
Rome is truly amazing. I loved every minute being there. Nothing really compares to its history.
I was lucky enough to visit Rome as well as Lake Como & Milan just a few months after this was filmed & I completely fell in love with Rome & Italy, it's the most beautiful country in the world & of the few places I've seen I would say Rome & Lake Como are my favourite. I personally don't think any other city could compare to Rome.

I visited Rome while at grad school in London in 2018. I was just there one night but thank my lucky stars to have that memory now as we endure the pandemic. I can't wait to go back and see the Sistine Chapel, Spanish Steps, Catacombs and so much more. Best food in the world too!
Ostia Antica is amazing! The village of Roma Ostia is just amazingly cute and picturesque! The muesum at Antica Ostia is just incredble! You are face to face with actual inhabitants of the 3rd and 4th centuries!

I was fortunate enough to study and travel all the capitals as the typical “starving student.” Believe me there are ways to cut Rick’s budgets to the bone. I was very selective about the museums and a short train ride out from the historical centers of all these cities made all the difference in food and lodging. Your experience will be priceless if you learn the language. I look back and realize I did sell everything I could as well as sell a horse and a motorcycle. Beans and rice and rice and beans helped me save. Just do it.

Yes right bro, I will do the same,
Rome is my City of birth. It will always be home.
For me, Rome is truly UNIQUE! It has everything from delicious food, to beautiful views, from open air museums, and affordable hotel rooms. Rome is truly the birthplace of democracy, and you feel like you're in Europe with all these roman ruins and the Coliseum. If you're also spiritual, the Pope is there too. So it's certainly the most unique city in Europe.
I agree with another comment here back in 2014 people looked relaxed Wandering through the beautiful streets of Rome without a smart phone...if only i could time travel back centuries ago just to gaze at Romes ancient architecture...
These videos not only bring back delicious memories of my visit to Italy, but fill in the blanks of history which I had left out from my experiences. Amazing narration - respectful to local history and culture, without being boring for the viewer.
Loved it ,the backstreets are the soul of any city .

Did you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain ? if so you will go back !
I thought I had seen all of Rick's Italy videos and watched them all many, many times, but somehow I missed this one, and it is simply fantastic.
I have been to Athens 3 times, Rome maybe 8 times, it's great for connecting flights to other European countries. I love both Rome and Athens, but I love the open space, the sunlight in Athens more. One thing I felt really safe to walk all over Rome at night was because there are police everywhere and I can ask for directions. Recently, I watch this UK program called "GINO ITALIAN ESCAPED " ITALIAN chef traveled all over lesser known cities/towns and cook traditional Italian cuisine, it made me wanna visit every coast of the "boot"👢 , especially the olive Grove
While educational, it is also very enjoyable. Thank you.
The part when Steve was on the bus and warned that anybody could be a pick pocket was hilarious even though he was being serious hahah!
For some reason Rome is the most interesting city in the world, It makes me feel a certain way.
The tour guides really earn their keep. It is so moving and upsetting to learn about the Jewish ghetto.
Thank you Rick! I followed your advice and popped into several churches while in Rome and the memories will last a lifetime! An organist practicing hymns, a Family preparing for a Matrimonial Mass with Red velvet Ribbons! And more! Thank You So much! FYI. St. Peter's Basilica is open at 7 am on Sundays. No lines anywhere, maybe 20 people in the entire Basilica!

Splendid! Thanks Rick

Beautiful videos and this one very nice music to the end. Thanks Grace
Roma è bellissima città! Grazie mille Steve’s per il video! 💖👍
....so beautifully done ,..thank you!!
Beautiful
Just a little nitpicking here: in the carbonara you must use the "guanciale" (from the pork's cheek and neck) and not the "pancetta" (from the pork's belly). It's more tasty and flavoured (and it has more fats), often seasoned with garlic and herbs, and it is left to mature for more time than the pancetta, so it's usually more crusty when cooked.
Absolutely a tjme capsule of magnificent beauty far outweighing any modern city. Soemtimes u cannot out do the best when its alreadt been done. That is Rome.
Love Rome
Thank you for another great video, as always lots of useful information.
Fantastic Rome. I am taking this as a guide for my upcoming visit to Rome.
Enjoy very much your travels. Keep on travelling forever.
Stunningly evocative. To think of how much more beautiful and prominent the colours and architecture would've been then without today's visual pollution is truly fascinating.
Thank you. Such an inspiration. I am thinking of just getting a group together and only to visit the places you mention in this video. What a beautiful, Catholic, holiday. Thank you.
Another informative video. Thank you Rick👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Great video. I love it.
I spent ten days in Rome last summer... how did I miss these churches?!... I guess time to go back!

Really great, wish we would have gone to Ostia Antica But we did walk into that beautiful courtyard at the end of the video (off Campo d' Fiore)...I have the same picture. What a coincidence!

This was awesome watching 2019, we lost so much to barbaric Germanic tribes, they've been menace to Europe ever since. Romans were so skilled at ensuring diverse agricultural practices, artificial farming techniques, and food preservation methods, through Empire the use of raw material from every corner. Indeed, their relative success is indicated by the fact that such a scale of food production would not be seen again in Europe until the 18th century CE.
Can’t wait! Heading there on October 22nd 🐸🌍
