I really liked Marcus Aurelius. His philosophical writings helped in shaping who I am. What a shame that Commodus couldn’t follow his father’s philosophies.

I’ve studied ancient history and if you read contemporary third party accounts, you’ll get a better idea of how they looked. It’s well known that sculptors were under orders to flatter their subjects with idealistic and unrealistically better looking sculptures. Just think about portrait photos of today and how they look much better than the real person.

Thanks for your comment! I once read about a strategy of an artist who was trying to find the most realistic-looking sculpture/portrait by picking the ugliest one 😅 Although they say roman sculptures of this era used to be pretty realistic, I start having serious doubts. All in all, the personality of Marcus Aurelius was pretty much perfect, him being good or bad-looking would not really change the fact of what an amazing human being the emperor was.

The production of Gladiator probably began more than 25 years ago. All this technology used to reconstruct with accuracy is less than 10 years old. It was good for what was known at the time.
