Michelle I just want to stop by and say how inspiring you are!!!! I just got back into roller skating (used to do it more when i was a kid) and you've been such a huge icon for me in this time. I'm from Huntington Beach so I guess you just hit super close to home for me. Keep doing your thing!!!!!

This is great. I love that blade and rollerskate culture are becoming more intertwined. I havent tried grinds yet but keen to try and I am lucky I have blading friends to help me understand them. Totally true that they all feel very different (I only stepped on a mini ledge so far). Thank you for posting

The only difference with mini ledge and proper ledge is just the jump height. I got some problem when doing 2 foot grind but at least I can jump with one foot resting on the ledge when grinding. My maximum jump height is 120cm, which is slightly Ok, but I can only jump into stall on 80cm height max

Difficulty is subjective but starting with a backside stall will help you learn grinds along the coping parallel like what is required for all the other grinds

Look at some inline trick sources. They are a great place to get ideas, and give a reasonable idea of what might be a good trick progression. Just keep in mind that some of what is easier on blades will be harder on quads and vice-versa, and different people will find different things easier. For example, the soul grind is *usually* the first most basic grind on blades. I find those much more awkward on quads, where other people find them their easiest grind on quads. The Mizzou is the easiest grind for me. Similarly the Kind Grind is a tougher trick on blades, but the [Box Grind/Kind Grind/Negative Mizzou] is one of the easier grinds.

Yorely, I can't wait for you to visit! The trucks are 1st edition Sure Grip trucks first promoted by Lisa at Rollergirl.ca SG has redesigned them to be taller but they feel unstable to me since the pivot arm is so long. They are attached to the Marvel plate that comes on the Beach Bunny skates.

Very nice! Thank you for doing this breakdown. I enjoyed watching all the nice, clean, technical grinds. To get a bit nit-picky, many of these tricks are ones that a group of us among the IGORS Admins and other groups have been debating proper naming conventions for. Our general consensus is that Negative is a better analog for grinds done on the ramp-side leg, rather than Topside. (Negative being the inline term for a grind on the instep side of the soul.) The balance point is a bit different with negative, but topside really requires the leg being cranked over. So Negative Mizzou or Negative Soul rather than Topside. I still feel like we need a better quad-specific term though. One trick where we do seem to have had a quad-specific name stick, is the Box Grind - what you are calling a Kind Grind. That is the term I would use for a grind with the leading foot sliding rotated into

  • @estrojen8755

Cameron- I totally agree that we need quad specific grinds/slides. The coping is directly underneathe the middle of our wheels- so I cant see a soul or a negative term actually applying to balances the same. Since box grind covers so many variations - it seems to me it should be respected for all the different ways you can do them. It becomes hard to teach or learn when 4 different poses are treated with the same name. We need more NEW terms - not borrowed ones and I have all the confidence the world that quad skating will get there with more talks like these.

I agree that the movements are more similar to negative grinds than topside grinds. That would make the “x-grind” more of a Stub Soul, right? At the end of the day it isn’t really either since there is no functional difference between “soul”, “negative”, or topside for quad skates (especially on a round rail). Perhaps it’s useful to think of it differently. Since the foot placement is the same regardless of the variation of the grind, it might be more meaningful to think of them in terms of frontside and backside. So, standard soul grind is frontside and negative/top soul is backside. On the other hand, standard Mizou is backside, while negative/top Mizou is frontside. The only place where this breaks down is makio/fish brain since they are one foot and could be truly forward-facing. Alternatively, quad skaters can borrow the term “far side” since this term doesn’t change the mechanics of the trick, only the approach. It also works because they are grinding on the foot furthest from the obstacle during approach. Or perhaps a new term that has no prior association with the sport (I.e. They could get anatomical and use “medial” to mean the inside of the foot towards the obstacle, and “lateral” to mean the outside of the foot towards the obstacle - “Medial Soul Grind” has a nice ring.) Nevertheless, I am ok with “topside” since they are still more on top of the obstacle, so IDK.
