In the much-anticipated 50th episode of "Rolled Up", Budo Jake ventures to OC Judo to hone his skills under the tutelage of none other than the esteemed 6th degree black belt, Juan Montenegro. As the training ensues, the conversation naturally drifts towards the fascinating and ever-evolving world of martial arts.
The duo delves into the crucial aspect of balance between standing techniques and ground techniques, a topic that has sparked numerous debates within the community. Juan Montenegro sheds light on his experience and imparts invaluable wisdom about the importance of mastering both, as they complement each other and form the foundation of a well-rounded fighter.
As the training progresses, the two delve into the equally important concept of leaving one's ego at the door. Juan Montenegro emphasizes that ego has no place in martial arts, and that humility is an essential trait for any practitioner. He imparts this vital lesson to Jake, emphasizing that ego can cloud one's judgement and hinder their growth as a martial artist.
As the session draws to a close, Juan Montenegro demonstrates some of his signature moves, including a brilliant Osoto Gari counter throw, a series of impressive pinning techniques, and an armbar that left Jake in awe. The sheer finesse and technical proficiency on display were a testament to Juan Montenegro's mastery of the art, leaving Budo Jake with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of Judo.

I have the honor of knowing him and being his friend since his beginnings in Judo back in the mid-70s, together we have competed and belonged to the Peruvian Judo Team. In the 80s we traveled together to international tournaments, very strong judoka, he has some of the best Tai Otoshi I know. Today he is already retired from competition and I can see him in his role as Sensei and coach with great success....he is a great person and an excellent human being, always willing to share his knowledge with everyone who approaches him and without any reservations. .....a big hug Juan and may the successes continue.

That's really wonderful, thank you for sharing. Juan really is a truly kind and honorable martial artist.
I'm so proud to be part of OC Judo. When I first got covid, people reached out to see if I was okay, juan included. When I recovered they made sure I started back into it slowly. I've been at other gyms before and no other places have made me feel like family.
Sensei Juan is a gem. I have always enjoyed training with him at GBHQ. Whenever we started from standing, I'd quickly pull guard 😁. I'm bummed I never took the opportunity to go to OC Judo to practice judo with him. Great 50th episode and congratulations!
Excellent! Its good to have Rolled Up back.

it was nice having you over at our dojo!
Never been to OC judo but I did get train with some of the people from that gym at a Flavio Canto seminar last year. Really nice and helpful people. Very solid judo as well.
Great video!! Nice to see you covering judo. I highly recommend you check out Bunasawa Kai Judo in Costa Mesa. Sensei Nori Bunasawa is a 9th degree black belt who was taught by Waseda and the famous Masahiko Kimura

It's definitely on our list!
Haven’t practiced Judo in a long time but this video is giving me the urge to get back on the mat! Thanks!
Great video . Much Respect To Sensei Juan Judo is The Best
My Jiu jitsu school incorporates judo into our weekly lessons and I’ve found it really helpful. I do have to say that the only time I’ve ever had an injury is from judo. A broken rib from a harai goshi where my partner landed on top of me 😂. Judo is still awesome.
Thanks Jake. I too love judo
Judo is a great Martial Art and you learn some good tools

Absolutely. Life saving tools.
When my gym does live stand up sparing in the regular classes its like basically just a matter of time until someone gets a knee injury.
