The Esso Northumbria was an enormous oil tanker built at Wallsend by state commission to carry crude oil from the Persian Gulf around Africa to Britain in response to the Suez Crisis and Egypt denying British ships access to the Suez Canal. Her design was effectively a scaled-up version of existing designs, which introduced a number of unforeseen structural problems as she was at the time the largest ship ever constructed in Britain. She was also constructed on a tight budget to a fixed-price contract, and there were major cut corners in her construction. The story told in the song, of an oil spill and fire at sea, never actually happened. However, the Northumbria required frequent repairs and only served for 12 years before being retired due to fears of a minor spill. She was broken up in Taiwan starting in 1982, followed by her Sister ship Hibernia not long after.

Any time I listen to his rendition of Foggy Dew I remember getting my ass kicked by the pitch shifts in my voice class. So I sang Fischia il Vento instead.
I just want to pay a moment of respect for the Irishman who had to sing about how he loves the British Empire without visibly cringing. That’s an almost impossible feat! Kudos.
For those that might not know, this song was written about the Esso Northumbria, an Esso Corporation oil tanker that was launched in 1969 and broken up in 1982.

Northumbria was built in my hometown! Singing WAY along with this one.
All your stuff is good but holy crap Colm, this is the perfect song for your voice, the performance has got such energy. Fantastic, keep it coming!

During the pandemic lockdown, there was a period of about 6 months where my work (a library) was closed to the public, but we were still working. I would sometimes sing Joli Rouge to pass the time, got a few of my coworkers to join in. Such a good song.

Thank you for the amazing music I was listening to this song as I arrived at the wrong location of the interview late. Walked my anxiety ass over to the correct location. My face beat red, my legs were cramping, and nearly in tears with the stress of the situation. In a damn dress too. Despite all these horrible marks of a bad interview. I still got the job. :)

@WhitzWolf92

Funny, that's the opposite sort of environment from where shanties originated. They were originally devised as a way to keep sailors (and other work crews) motivated and in-step (when that mattered). Nowadays, of course, the term evolved to encompass a far wider variety. 'Roll Northumbria' is a great example of that broadening, given how slow and chill it is (at least, as performed by the Dreadnaughts - Colm might hit us with a curveball and crank up the tempo) compared to something like 'Drunken Sailor' or 'Fish in the Sea'.

Holy cow, this has to be the best version I’ve heard straight from the first second, literally started the video and was shocked with a shiver to my spine with that amazingly haunting and powerful opening!
So happy to hear a much deeper and grittier song than what you usually do. This is a great fit for your talents!
Well, that was incredible. Not that I expected it to be otherwise.🧡
One dragon slayer to rule them all, and Colm is his name! Great story telling and arrangement/cover sir!
Beautifully haunting! Well done, Colm!

Colm, your vocal range never ceases to impress. That low note at 2:31 floored me it was so damn deep and mighty. Keep doing what you are, because you have a gift my man!
That low note really sounded more like a metal growl than just a low note. Amazing! =D
Loving this new color and smoke theme!
At least, like, 50 of these views are just me listening over and over and over 😍😍😍
Built in 1969, The Esso Northumbria was once the largest oil tanker in the world with a beam of 170'. She truly was a royal monster.
Thank you so much for covering this one. Ever since I heard the version by The Dreadnoughts I've been wanting an epic cover of it, and between the instruments and your stellar voice, you have absolutely nailed that epic vibe I envisioned. Definitely a new favourite.
When you hit that Eb1 at 02:31, you do a grand impression of a double bass; first time I've heard a human voice do that.
I live near the Tyne myself, in Northumbria. This song is ever so nice.
Can you do a 2022 version for the wellerman? I would be so excited! The addition of the instruments in the newer sea shanties is EPIC! Also, can you do Davy Jones theme as tavern music? Please!
I love when you scrunch your brow, you get that V line! Maybe you don't so it doesn't feel like a compliment, but I do mean it as one. I love listening to your "old" songs as much as the new ones.
Love your harmonies and range. Amazing cover, amazing work as always!
Oh ya!!! It's gonna be good!!

That bit when Colm hits those low notes. Mmmmmhhhmm
I did *not* expect your voice to hit so hard, the energy of it knocked me off my feet. I love the original and I might love this one even more. Thank you for doing such a good job on this.

My favorite shanty covered in such an epic way - goosebumbs. Especially those low notes. Thanks Colm 🤩
I just saw that you did this and my heart dropped, I love this song! This is my alarm, ringtone and I regularly listen to it on loop for hours. All I can say, that I love your cover of it equally. ♥
Would love to see you cover some of the Bards Tale 4 OST tunes.. they're beautiful Scottish Gaelic songs! Maybe "Iain Ghlinn Cuaich", "Cha D' fhuair mi'n Cadal" or "Am Braigh Uige"

Ye keep me going to Apple Music to find ye, then give em a good telling off when I can’t (even when I can!) cheers. My great papa and Nana sang these to me when I was a lass. I sang to my wee one’s, now they sing to theirs! Never let the history die.
