Rolex Said NO to SERVICING This Rolex: Customer Q&A on How To Care for Your Vintage Rolex
The Watch Guys are back once again when a beautiful Rolex Sea Dweller comes through the door. The owner had a lot of interesting questions for Robertino, ranging from water pressure tests to proper storage for the vintage Rolex and its box. Relax and enjoy this candid conversation, and hopefully learn something new! Also, if you think you know the value of this beautiful neo-vintage 16660 let us know in the comments!

Rolex actually didn’t refuse to service the watch - they just had certain requirements, namely, that the dial and hands would have to be replaced with service parts in order to bring the watch up to service quality.

Yeah, but that's insane. Can you imagine if you took your car to the mechanic because the starter was broken, but they wouldn't fix it unless you agreed to a new paint job, replacement of all the shocks, new upholstery, a new headliner, and new tires? Nobody would go for that. The customer bought the watch and it belongs to them. They should be the ones to decide what work they want done on it. We need to reject this idea that the manufacturer can set the standards for what work an item needs. It's the customer, and only the customer, who decides that.

@@jaybleu6169 well it’s partly because every Rolex that gets serviced also gets a Service Warranty card that guarantees a certain level of quality for a certain period of time. There’s a standard that has to be upheld. The customer still does have the ultimate say on what they want to do by choosing somewhere else to have their watch serviced.
I have a rail dial 1665 and honestly there's so much to worry about with these vintage ones. My dad never thought much about it since it was his watch for years. I know too much so it's, like, stressful to think about. 😂
Spider dial is due to a lacquer issue, nothing to do with moisture ingress to the case.

I brought my 2004 14060M to an authorized dealer for service and asked that they not polish it. They polished it. They did not charge me for the service.
Simple solution, find a good independent watch maker who’ll treat you like a customer who owns the watch, not a mark.
Since the guy didn’t want to show his face, the watch is worth $0 to me !! 😂
The Bracelet is a solid end link so that’s not original to an 80’s watch. Those came out about 2000. Oh but it’s a sea dweller. I don’t know about those

@@watchguys_ My first Seadweller was from 1983 and it had solid end links, and I think it was a new model that year. The Submariner that I had from a few years earlier did not have solid end links.
The date of the watch goes by the first letter in the serial number for any Rolex pre 2010. The date on the card means nothing, that can be filled in at any time. This dealer knows nothing
@watchguys_

The watches serial number tells you the exact year that the watch was manufactured. The date on the card is the date the watch “sold” or “left” the AD. The customer was confused as to why the paperwork was a different year than the serial number revealed. This is the reason as explained.

@@user-ew7qx9zj6v Hi there. As explained in our most recent comment, the watches serial number tells you the exact year that the watch was manufactured. The customer was confused as to why the paperwork showed a different year than the serial number revealed. He understood once we explained that the date on the card is only the date that the watch "left" the AD, and not the date that the watch was produced. Regarding the "spider dial" effect, this is indeed an issue caused by a defect in the lacquer. This does occur with some glossy dials of watches made from this time frame whose lacquer causes a cracking effect also known as "crazing" or a "spider dial". Spider dials are actually more sought after as many were/are replaced by Rolex during routine services and repairs.
@TheRacerRich

Not really, it is industry norm to refer to the watch by the year on the card. Yes, everybody doing this knows that is not necessarily when the watch was made, but that is the proper jargon
@watchguys_

Correct! Date on the card (date the watch leaves the AD) is the date the warranty is from forward. Serial number tells you year of production.
Does Rolex refuse service or says they will only service if they can replace parts? I have an 86 Sub which my father had serviced by someone other than Rolex about 25 years ago and they replaced the dial with a “rescreened” dial. Since it’s not original anymore I’d rather have a “service dial” from Rolex and to get the watch back fresh shape. I am not sure if this is even possible due to the watch’s age
@oaktree1628
2 ай бұрын
Not sure what a rescreened dial is, but I had a similar issue with my 85 Datejust which I recently brought to a Rolex authorized dealer for service, but I had changed the dial to a different color dial a long time ago. Even though the replacement dial was an authentic Rolex dial, they told me that it would have to be replaced with a new service dial, and new service hands, and that the old parts would not be returned to me. This is apparently their standard procedure now, to prevent authentic Rolex parts from being potentially re-used in fake Rolex watches.

This guy (the owner) is exactly why the Rolex market is out of control - people who have no idea what they're doing or talking about who just want a flashy watch so they can tell their friends "it's a birth year watchhhhhhh from nineteen eighty-eighttttttt with a spider dialllllll".
This is the reason that I sold my sub and daydate. Rolex thinks their shot doesn't stink. Highly overpriced. With the prices they charge for a service you never own it, you're actually leasing. I gave em up 10 years ago and I don't miss them!
Blur his face but not the reflection lol
If this person is in a "wet" area, I would suggest to pack everything hermetically (zip bags) during a dry day or dry environment inside and put some good quality food safe silica gel packs. And finally, never swim or dive with this watch. Not worth the risk.
So caught in the dollars he has no sense.
That's why i go for Patek Philippe as PP have all the archives of the watches it made before and can service / replace them with original parts even if its 100 years old. For more than 1 generation, PP is the brand to go. That's why i am passing on this legacy to our baby.
