Well said, Ash! What I love about my 124270 is it is both sporty and elegant, durable and reliable, incredibly accurate, dependable and robust, disappears on the wrist, and incredibly comfortable to wear. Another bonus is it flies under the radar screen. The Explorer is a very iconic watch, with 70 years of history. And the 3-6-9 dial, combined with the Mercedes hands, makes it the easiest analog watch I own when it comes to accurately and quickly tell the time. It is a keeper and a worthy addition to anyone's collection. Cheers!

@@vantage789 I guess that depends on the watch, I definitely had the phases with other watches where the waiting was fun, but after a few months of actually owning you get bored of the watch. I now have my Explorer for almost a year and some people consider that watch boring, but I think it’s so plain (in a good way), hence why I can see having it in my collection until the end of my days since it’s such a cornerstone of my collection, imo it’s the perfect “go anywhere, do anything” watch.

In my opinion the 36mm Explorer is the best of all worlds, you get the upside down triangle, Mercedes hands, baton markers, lollipop 3rd hand, beautiful gloss black dial & the 3,6,9. The brushed case and tapered bracelet with the polished bezel and sides looks perfect. I always appreciate your Explorer videos. I'm sure the 40mm will fit perfectly on Iceman's wrist and at this point he might as well complete the collection and grab a Day/Date as well.

The definitive officer's watch. It took me a while to adapt to the 36mm size, from 40mm Sub and Sea-Dweller and 42 Speedy, but once you get your eye in you begin to appreciate its understated, functional brilliance. It does everything you need, nothing you don't and for me, can be worn for a day climbing, shooting or forestry, before progressing directly to a formal dinner. Yes, I love my divers, chronos, complications and DJ but the Explorer is the ultimate GADA - a watch of quiet genius.

I have to admit I don’t have the financial means to buy a luxury watch, but as a designer I’m interested in timepieces, design and marketing in general. The most fascinating thing about a Rolex branded watch is that I know a few people who are too afraid to wear their Explorers because those have become investment instruments, instead of a daily timepiece. The ’watch market’ is in a silly place, and Rolex sits at the top of this silly pyramid.

Agreed, can you imagine all of the mature men, watch collectors, debating the value of a watch because Ian Fleming may or may not have written about it in his novel? Even worse, instead of making memories by buying a watch for your own spouse, spending millions of dollars on a Paul Newman watch bought by his wife, Joanne Woodward. Are we that intellectually and emotionally bankrupt as a civilization?

I’m wearing the new Tudor 41 ( I chose Champagne), which is sort of a DJ without the date, a great Jubilee with T-fit, curvy case now, and hits the spot for me size wise (sizes for everyone).

You will not be disappointed. I picked mine up last month. I had a choice between the DJ and the Exp 124270. I had thought I would prefer the Explorer, but when I tried both on, there was no other choice than the DJ. I have a 19cm wrist, and the AD had been trying to convince me to size up for both watches, but the 36mm DJ is just the perfect fit. Understated, classic, and functional. I am considering the Exp 40mm for the future!

So glad you brought in the idea that the Explorer is the true watch of James Bond. Flemings Explorer was on display at the National Watch and Clock Museum in Pennsylvania some years ago as part of an exhibit of Bond watches used in the movies. Flemings daughter in a published interview stated that it was highly likely that the Explorer was indeed Bonds watch. She stated that her father gave Bond virtually all of her fathers preferences; vodka martinis, literature, women, music, automobiles, etc. She said that it would be obvious that her father, Ian Fleming, would also give Bond his choice of watches, the Rolex Explorer. By the way, It appears the only reason Sean Connery wore a Submariner, starting with "Dr. No", was budgetary. He was given the watch owned by someone in the production department to avoid buying a Rolex on a very limited film budget.

Personally, if I ever could afford an Explorer, I think (apart from my trusty Seiko 5 beater watch, which I’ll never part with) it would end up being my sole everyday watch - I think it’s pretty much suited to any occasion or dress style. I love the idea that only those in the know appreciate what the Explorer represents - it’s one of the most subtle Rolex watches. I’d go for a 36mm myself - my current Tudor BB36 is the perfect size for my slender wrist!

A big part of the enjoyment for me is the history of this model and enjoying a piece from the lineage. Most people that don’t appreciate it aren’t aware of its past, and I was one of them. I’d choose the 36mm all day long as it’s true to the 1954 original, it is also lighter and more comfortable as a daily. The latest model is by far the best. The bracelet is uniquely sized to the explorer, steeply tapered down to 14mm which feels great on the wrist. Having all the modern features in a classic package is also great, such as the superluminova, white gold hands & markers, larger numerals and superior movement also used in the no date submariner

I think considering this viewers height, and the fact that he seems to own mostly complex models, the Explorer 1 in 40mm should be a good fit for him. The size will be right. And it’s always nice to have one piece that isn’t within your normal preference for style. For example, all of my watches are understated, including my explorer 1, but I also have a bigger, louder, and shinier watch that just adds some balance to the collection. There are times I’m about to walk out the door and I grab it, see it in the mirror, and realize it works. I think this chap will be surprised at how well the 40mm Explorer can help round out his collection. If he hates it, well, he’ll likely make a few dollars selling it off.

Bigger watches tend to look clunky and less classy. 36mm is the perfect and original size for a classic sports watch for men with many wrist sizes. 40mm and up is the arnold/rambo era of watches like Hublot. I loved brushed bracelet on the explorer, i tried on the submariner and felt nothing.

My watch doesn’t have a date complication - however, my phone, laptop, Outlook and so on does, so once I know what today’s date is, all I need to check is the time! I even write it in my notebook! You could argue that I don’t even need a watch - I mean, even my car tells me the time and date - but I love wearing a mechanical timepiece, and I’d hate to wear one of those Apple Watch things that just about everyone I encounter these days wears! Do I need to count my steps - no, if I’ve climbed a flight of stairs or walked home from the shops, that’ll do for my daily steps quota! Do I want my emails pinged to me instantly? No - most of them are junk Mail anyway!

I bought an Explorer homage in 36 mm. Yeah, I don’t like how small it looks on my 7.25 inch wrist. Glad I did this first before paying a few thousand dollars on the real thing. The 40mm Explorer has my interest. I only have 6 watches which I rotate for each day of the week. I have a watch for each category: Dive, Drive, Field, Fly/GMT, Classic/ Dress, & Sport. My favorite Rolex is the Oyster Perpetual in champagne. I think that’s the most versatile in the Rolex range. A timeless piece yet quintessentially Rolex.

The 36mm is closer to 35mm and aimed at women. It's child-sized. The 40mm is closer to 38mm and has a far more masculine - and thicker - bracelet, which complements the overall look of the timepiece. The 36mm also comes across more of a dress watch than a classic sports watch because of its diminutive size.

Love your channel, but there is one slight correction regarding Ian Fleming. Fleming did owna Rolex explorer 1016, but it can’t be the watch. He had in mind for his characters use as the model Fleming owned, did not exist until 1959. The first mention of Bonds watch was in 1954. Fleming also directly states that it’s a Rolex oyster perpetual in on her Majesty Secret Service.

I own one Rolex. I bought it over 40 years ago when there were no waiting lists, etc. and prices were less obscene. I have worn it all over the world, from the jungles of Madagascar to the deserts of Arabia. It has held up and functioned well. In all that time I have only ever once had someone comment or ask whether it is a Rolex. That was on a train from London to Manchester and I was dressed like a scruffy urchin. The guy was probably perplexed how some one in faded jeans and a scruffy tee shirt could wear an expensive watch. Probably thought I stole it!😳 It’s been a good watch. But, let’s face it, they’re a mass produced item. Well made, no doubt. They are sort of like Toyotas. Were it not for a very, very good marketing campaign and a (possibly) contrived short supply they would not be worth what people seem to be prepared to pay for them. I have read that, in inflation adjusted terms, the early submariners sold for the equivalent of about $1200 in today’s money, i.e. 1/10th of what suckers pay for them now. There are a lot of watches that perform the same function, have very similar specifications, last just as long, but cost a fraction of Rolexs. It seems to a case of, ‘the more you pay, the more it’s worth’. I got mine serviced recently and it came back all clean and shiny, so I decided that I should not wear it doing gardening and get it scratched up again. So, I bought a Citizen eco-drive off Amazon for a about $120. It keeps better time than my Rolex. It is more legible (black dial vs champagne). It has similar WR and shock ratings. I can leave it sitting for a few days and it will not stop on me. Of course, it will not impress a watch snob, or some gold digging thot. I do not care. Also, I have never understood the notion of collecting, watches or anything else. I buy stuff for a purpose, not just to “have” it and look at it. The idea of a ‘summer watch’ is ludicrous to me, especially if it cost $5K, or $10K or more? Each to his own, of course. People pay over $300K for a Richard Mille watch or a Patek Phillip, but I won’t ever be one of them. Then again, it is unlikely that some mugger will ever shank me for my watch, either.

If I wanted something else over a DD, I'd buy a Nautilus. I have a 39mm mk2 Explorer. I love it. It really is perfect as an everyday piece. Only 2 people have ever noticed it on my wrist and commented in well in over a year. I like that. I buy watches for me to enjoy, not to flex over others.

Ash - Great video, as always! Thanks so much! I just purchased an Explorer I (124270) a few weeks ago, and I can't stop looking at it. It's a perfect watch for my wrist and my lifestyle. However, at the time I was "put on the list" with the AD, I was also inquiring about the GMT II "Batgirl" (jubilee) which is (IMHO) a very different watch. It just so happens the Explorer I came first. What to do (if I get the call)? Thankfully, I have the resources, BUT I am a practical person and may not "need" both at this point in my life. What does the GMT give you, esthetically wise, that the Explorer I doesn't? And, do you find the GMT II uncomfortable, after wearing the Explorer I? Thanks!

  • @TheChapsGuide

    @TheChapsGuide

Oh they are very different and serve different purposes in my watch-wearing life. The GMT is actually a very comfortable and pleasantly proportioned watch indeed and wears like a dream. If the GMT is offered it is a no brainer - bay it and ponder afterwards. If you really don't like it, you can move it along and there is no risk of financial loss (most likely a pleasant gain). Enjoy the Explorer - it is such a perfect watch.

Instead of another Rolex, I went with the Glashutte Original SEAQ 39.5mm with blue dial and fully brushed bracelet. Fully in house movement and keeps better time than my GMT Master in all six positions. My wrist is only 7.25 inches. If I had a larger wrist I would have gotten the SEAQ day date. These watches are significantly better finished than the rolexes and I can read the dial easier than the 224270 I was going to purchase. The best is no one knows what it is and are not intimidated until they are standing next to me. I put it on a Glashutte rubber strap and I can wear it anywhere without concern of drawing a potential thief’s attention. Only 200 of my model are handmade each year so no one else in the boardroom will have one.

The other benefit is that a lot of people in the UK have never heard of Orient, so they’re quite exclusive timepieces. I’d also recommend Certina - they make some lovely Titanium dive watches, and also the Prince DS, which is a more affordable equivalent to an Aqua Terra. Hamilton also make some lovely automatic tool watches too.

The Exp checks no boxes for you, and you already doubt its place in your collection. If you want a dressy-ish piece to complement the DJ, an Omega AT, Breitling Premier, VC overseas, or JLC (MC or Polaris) all sound like much better fits than an Exp. Plus, you’ll be letting someone else, a person legitimately jazzed about owning/wearing it, buy that Exp.
