Rolex Explorer II 16570 Review | One Month of Ownership Review (Polar)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It has been nearly 12 months since making any significant watch purchase, but after hitting 100,000 subscribers (thank you) I decided to put an end to that streak and ended up purchasing a Rolex Explorer II 16570.

Absolutely love the 16570. Bought it 20 years ago and got a few other Rolexes, IWC, Omegas since but I keep coming back to this watch for everyday use. It’s tough enough to take a few knocks and yet presentable enough to slide discreetly under the sleeve without being ostentatious. It’s versatility is unmatched.

I had the 2004 version...didn't like it (felt like a 38mm)...too small on the wrist. Traded it in on the new version. It is an absolute beast.

I bought one too in 2001. It was a gift to myself for closing a big deal when I was an expat in Australia. To this day, it’s easily my favorite watch.

@@TeddyBaldassarre I think the 42mm for someone with a 7 & 1/4 wrist has very similar proportions to the 40 in your wrist . Remember the indexes are larger and so are the hands to match increased case size

Great review, thank you!! Purchased my 16570 while living in Ansbach, Germany, mid/late 90s, military aviator. In fact I just got it back from a factory service today. It’s gorgeous, literally like new (highly recommend a factory service)and I’m in love all over again. 😊. Stunning watch that will w/stand the test of time. 👍🏻👍🏻

Great work, Teddy! I always enjoy your videos. This is my favorite Exp 2 model. 40mm just fits my wrist a lot better than the current 42mm. Like you, I also prefer the drilled lugs on this model as this piece just goes well with a lot of leather straps! At some point in time, I'll have to own one. Not now as I've spent what I believe is too much on watches the past couple of years! Time to enjoy and bond with what I already have. Cheers!

Congrats on 100k and commemorating it with a Rolex. Hands down, out of all the current production Rolex models, my favorite has to be the black dial explorer 2. I am patiently waiting for my AD to call me with the news that they have one for me.

Fine choice! I just bought a polar "swiss only" to commemorate the birth of my son. I love both! I feel the swiss only may have additional value/collectibility, but I've been wearing it non-stop on the bracelet and can only hope it holds value over a few decades while I beat it up...

Great video. Got mine June 4th of this year to commemorate a special occasion. I got an 04 polar no holes case and solid end link band. I ended up finding (and overpaying) for a 214270 bracelet and now it is the perfect modern-esque watch. I’ve only worn my sub once since I got the explorer 2. Wear yours in good health.

Congratulations on reaching 100,000 subscribers Teddy Baldassarre, well deserved. I don't own any Rolex watches and if in the future I did purchase one I would probably go for something like your Rolex Explorer. I really like the design of the watch which is ideal in a sports watch. I personally have three sports watches which are solar quartz Citizen Eco Drive watches and also a Orient sports watch which I do wear often in my rotation of watches. Thanks for this interesting review and greetings from here in the UK.

Congrats on the 100k subscribers, and on a great watch. This is my favorite Rolex model, and I have owned several of them. Given the combination of non solid end links of the bracelet and Swiss Made dial, I assume your watch is from late 1999 or 2000. My first 16570 was from 2001, and had the SEL, but the lume was similar to yours, which is what eventually made me part with it: it had the same permanent green hue, even in day light, which ended up bothering me. And, contrary to you, I thought it was poor at maintaining night time readability after an hour or two. The hands, especially the minutes one, would become unreadable. So I sold it, and a few years later acquired a 1995 version with a nice and consistent ivory patina on the hands and indices. I am very pleased with this one, and of all of the watches in my collection, it would probably be the last one I'd part with. One last thing on the 3185 vs. 3186: a full turn of the crown will jump the hour hand by 4-5 hours on the former vs. 8-9 hours on the latter.

Just ordered the exact same model still not sure I shouldn't have got the 42 mm but this came up first and think you're right about the red gmt hand looking more business-like and prefer the way it pops against the polar dial .Good to see you wear it on leather too ,so many never stray from the bracelet ,

I bought a 216570 when I turned out 50, in 2012. It was my first Rolex. I'm brazilian but I bought it in Florence, Italy. I tried the "older" model like yours but found the newer one more fun, more modern, more interesting and that orange hand was very beautiful. The larger indices and hands were simply irresistible. Well, it is just my opinion. Great video, as always. Congrats on the 100,000 subscribers, but I'm sure your channel deserves more.

I really enjoy your videos. With that being said I wanted to comment on the watch. I've owned the same watch for about 18 years now and I love it as much as the first day I bought it for many of the reasons that you point out. I was not a fan of the GMT mostly because I felt like the bezel was cheap looking with the color just sort of painted on. I saw a jewelry store add in the NY Times with an image of the Explorer ll and that was it for me.The engraved numerals on the bezel really made it stand out and the polar dial just popped. Great choice, great watch!

Check out the GMT Master II bezel swap. I actually bought one of these a few years ago because I couldn't afford a 214270 Explorer and the 36mm 114270 felt too small. The thing I didn't like was the fixed 24 hour bezel. I looked into it and the 16700, 16710 GMT Master rotating bezel is a direct fit to this case. No modification necessary. Now I have a Polar Pepsi Explorer Master II.

I have the exact same and it’s my favorite Rolex model. It’s not just the looks but it’s been the most comfortable Rolex I have ever worn. I bought mine as a like new but preowned watch for $3000 from Japan. This was right before the 42mm model 216570 was out and back then people were going crazy about bigger watches regardless of their wrist size. I am so very happy that I did buy mine at the right time and didn’t wait for the 44mm with Orange gmt hand. Of course I have to mention that right around the same time I sold my 2 tone Blue Dial Submariner date, complete and in perfect condition for only $4000 to my Boss and his constant insistence and pressure on buying my Sub.

I recently acquired it over the newer 42mm 226570 purely over the size. For me, an ideal field watch size should be around 39mm to 40mm. Still a classic and completely useful watch from a toolbox.

I used to consider the Polar but when i went to buy the watch i saw the black and liked the black much more. I know the black would look like GMT and Sub but as long as it looks better to my eyes on my wrist. Even though i tried to love the Polar more for the white dial black markers (i like that configurations so much on paper). But it just didn’t sing to me. I think it might be because of the not-so-white lume that make it look unrefined to me. If the lume was as white as the white dial, i might like it better.

With regards to the 216570’s orange hand which you referred to as playful - I think what is missing here is some deeper discussion on the history of the explorer II and the older model(s) that hand comes from. Everything is done for a reason, especially when it comes to storied watch brands, especially of course Rolex who are not quick to change things. Yes you must do a comparison to right this wrong otherwise I shall have to type comments in all caps. I own the 216570 polar - I do want to get a 16570 as well as I quite like both. I travel from the UK a hell of a lot, I tend to spend 1/3 of the year in the US and I’m often hopping to countries (just went from LA to Germany... a flieger will be bought) so the GMT hand is a godsend. Agree that the camera work has drastically improved in this video - not that it was bad before, but it is a marked improvement. I recently stumbled upon a small channel which to me, had the best outdoor wrist shot production I have seen (from a viewer/consumer perspective) I shall link it later for inspiration Stay black

Congrats Teddy and nice vid as always. I used to only know Rolex as THE watch brand due to its top-notch marketing. As I grew my appreciation to watch more, I easily would pick Omega over Rolex of the same tier for its better engineering and historical value. That said, Explorer series (explorer 2 specifically) really was the watch of "love at first sight" to me. Combining with the history of the first ascent to Mount Everest. It holds a solid seat in my collection. The only question left is picking 1016 vs 1655 and 16570 vs 261570. And if somehow, you decide to make such a video..... well that's a good day haha Ed

These are really nice watches for folks with wrist sizes between 6.0 to 6.75 inches. Out of my small Rolex collection, my 114270 and 16570 gets the most of my wrist time (along with my Speedmasters and Sinn 556i). I actually bought my holes case 16570 w/ a black dial a long time ago, then bought a polar dial along with a set of black hands. In the winters, I often swap in a polar dial and wear it on a vintage leather strap. It's incredible. Only takes about 20 minutes to do. It's good because I also have a chance to blow out any dust from the movement and case and also re-lubricate the gaskets with silicone sealant.

Teddy. I absolutely love your channel and it has been a mainstay for me since getting enthusiastic about watches again a few months ago. If I can just offer one point of constructive criticism, it’s very clear that you have a bias towards smaller watches, which of course is absolutely fine, but it almost comes off as suggesting that larger watches aren’t as desirable in general… and I know plenty of others agree with you and prefer smaller watches. But those of us with medium to larger wrists may prefer larger wearing watches so don’t alienate us :) I personally prefer a watch case size of 42-44mm and that sits up off the wrist a bit and feels substantial. Call me crazy I don’t know why! One of the things I appreciate most about your channel is that I feel as though you don’t have an agenda beyond the occasional mention of your website, which is totally understandable. In every product category influencers have to be careful that they don’t seem to be pumping something specific, and I would just recommend you backing off on expressing such a strong preference towards smaller watches so much because it could appear that you are trying to drive the value of the smaller pieces that you own or might have a particular interest in. When it comes to that point in your videos, it kind of pulls me out of it them if that makes any sense. Anyways, I’m truly only sharing this because I am so in awe of what you have done with your channel and the way you present the information in such a professional, sophisticated and meaningful manner. Keep doing what you’re doing and best of luck on your continued watch adventure!

Teddy, great comments; as a new owner of the 124270 (which I love), my next purchase will be the Explorer II when/if… it comes in 36-38m. 🤞🏻

Teddy, I purchased a 216570 Polar. Even with my 7.7 wrist I found it uncomfortable and too large. Sold it for the 16570 Polar version. Very happy with the 16570 and it’s my daily wearer.

Great video even thought a couple years old.. I been wanting the explorer ii forever. Looking into the 216570 or now the 226570. Yesterday first time I seen a 16570 1987 model and wow really liked it. Love the vintage feel/size. My question is it being such an old watch could it be an everyday wear? If you had a choice newer model or the vintage. Price today are around the same.. hard choice.

I wish there was a 40 mm reference with the maxi hands, I adore that handset against the polar explorer II dial.

Just bought a 16570 with black dial from 2004. Like the more understated looks compared to other sports models and the 216570.

First Rolex that got me interested was a sub mariner but if I were to own a Rolex, it would be Date Just 36 oyster steel and white gold varient only. This is the only Rolex I need in my collection.

I love this watch, and great review! I’m weighing this up against the Omega planet ocean 39.5mm. I’m looking for a evening / weekend / holiday watch that is versatile but can take a bit of a beating in the pool, beach, etc... Any thoughts?

Congrets with the plus 100 k Teddy🤙🙏 about the watch, do you ever feel the presence/heritage of the Glycine Airman when looking at the bezel?

The Explorer is REALLY growing on me. I am starting to set money aside for one (which would be my first Rolex). I'll absolutely want that parachrom hair spring since I have had so many issues with my autos getting magnetized when travel overseas. Lately I travel with my Quartz Seamaster 200 to avoid the annoyance.

If you have to set money aside for a Rolex ...don't bother. Spend the money on something you need.

Congratulations on 100K Subs and on picking up this grail watch. This is such a cool watch, I can understand the growing appeal. Personally I prefer the Explorer 1, simple and flies under most people's radar. Fantastic review as usual Teddy :)

This is my watch. How cool is that. I bought this watch in 1990. It has been a daily wear watch until this year. I have started buying some other watches and now rotate the Rolex. I’ve never worn it on a strap but rather always used the bracelet. Very comfy. I love the polar explorer II but find the new style a bit”cartoonish”. Hope that isn’t offensive to anyone. Thanks and due to your videos I happily also own a Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 in the grey face. I find that bracelet very comfy for my 7.5 “ wrist.
