Both are great watches. Ultimately though, never compromise on what your heart really wants. These wonderful devices are already silly overpriced toys so pick one that you have an emotional connection with.

I would add the following in favor of Aqua Terra: - Two barrels (even distribution of released energy for improved precision) - Independently adjustable hour hand like in true GMT movements (great for travelling) - Iconic distinctive features: famous Omega’s twisted lugs and fang shaped hour markers - Availability of ceramic dial versions that look stunning - Availability of small second versions (I’m not big fan of it but many people are) - Super comfortable rubber strap with distinctive metal insert which is great for summer time and quite affordable.

Thank you for another thoughtful and educational video. Personally, I would go for the Aqua Terra in a heart beat. I have owned a Rolex Explorer in the past, but ended up selling it less than a year after purchase. It was at the very top of my budget limit at the time and, while I knew it suited my active, outdoors life well enough on paper, I found myself progressively babying it, wrapping it up in cotton wool and only wearing it for “special” occasions. I recognised the service/repair costs would be very significant and I was always paranoid about other, undesirable characters “spotting” it whenever I wore it in public. I ended up with a black dial Aqua Terra. To me, this is the superior watch - more technically advanced movement, potentially more accurate, more waterproof (and potentially tougher too?) and flies unobtrusively under the radar. I don’t stress over value retention because I recognised that this would be a keeper for me. Thanks again, keep up the great work and stay well :-)

In this case, I might select the Omega primarily because the Rolex Datejust is similar to others in my collection. In fact, the Rolex Oyster Date is really a 34mm Datejust. It might be nice to add a little variety to the collection, unless he wishes to collect only Rolex, which is fine. I also own an Omega dress watch I inherited from my father. Generally, I find Omega watches to be both superb and very nice but, like Tudor, they tend to have styling elements that make them seem not quite perfect. But I am 62 years old. I suspect that someone 32 would react quite differently. Excellent video, Ash!

I've owned the AT but sold it when I bought my DJ. Both are great watches but i prefered the fit and feel of the Rolex on the wrist. Its a much slender case and slips better under a cuff. However, the DJ isn't worth double of the AT! You can't go wrong with either option and maybe an Omega would be a nicr addition to this gentlemans collection.

Great video Ash. I’m an Omega fan and I think your comparison was fair and well adjusted. I think the saying ‘Horses for Courses’ comes to mind, when comparing. Personally, I would go for the Aqua Terra, even though I’m coming up to 66 years of age, but I can understand why the Datejust is extremely desirable especially when worn with a suit. However, I am more of a rugged type, so frills and fancies wouldn’t be my first desire. Of the Rolex range, I prefer the Oyster Perpetual, another iconic watch. Please do more comparisons.

Well put! I've been through this same conundrum and came to the same conclusion. I do think that the person who asked the question should go with the Aqua Terra just because he already has a few Rolexes. Or maybe even consider something like a second hand Reverso to give his collection a little more variety. Both the Datejust and Aqua Terra tick the same box and are a but redundant.

Great video!! I don’t think u can go wrong w either of these beauties. My biggest gripe with the omega is the bracelet. I tried one on 2 years back - maybe they have improved since then - but the untapered bracelet made the watch seem unbalanced. The tapered bracelet on the Rolex is really far superior imho. I really liked the aqua terra on a rubber strap, but in the end went DJ w jubilee and fluted bezel.

I always think that there are watch enthusiasts and then there are are Rolex and Omega enthusiasts. There are estimated to be around ten thousand watch brands and though the majority are low quality there are still large numbers of quality brands like Jaeger Le Coultre, Glashutte Original, Zenith. Piaget, IWC, Grand Seiko to name a few. yet so many people only see Rolex and Omega. I realise that this gains views. Ironically Rolex has quite a small history and spent the early days sticking Rolex badges on watches made by other manufacturers. Even now they have the most "industrial" mechanical watch manufacturing and have perfected the art of making watches on production lines. The Toyota of watch production really but through a huge marketing budget for sports like Formula 1, major golf and tennis tournaments etc.they command prices that have trebled in real terms over the last few decades. As an example of how to build a brand, make a successful company and position yourself as Veblen goods they are world leaders.

I’ll never be able to afford either, but frankly I’d go for the Aquaterra. The bezel is narrower, the markers are triangular, and you can get it with the “teakwood” face, all of which give the design a bit of youthful pizzazz without detracting from the “wow” factor. There’s a certain beauty in subtlety combined with true quality. Put that watch next to a truly generic design and you can immediately tell the difference.

As you have said here, Ash, the Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic wristwatches in the world. I bought a Datejust with a black dial and a yellow gold and steel jubilee bracelet sixteen years ago, and have worn it almost daily ever since that time. -It keeps excellent time, and I've never had the slightest problem with it. In my opinion, this particular watch can be dressed either up or down, and worn with everything from a sport coat or a suit, to a linen shirt rolled up to the elbows in the heat of summer. With its black dial, it can even work with black tie, should the occasion warrant it. Having said that, Omega makes some excellent watches as well. -I inherited a gold-cased dress Omega with an alligator strap, dated to 1953, from my maternal grandfather, which I wear occasionally with tweed jackets and cardigan sweaters in the fall. To my knowledge, it has only been serviced once in its seventy years, and keeps perfect time. I really do feel that a quality watch is the one piece of jewelry that the stylish man should consider investing in. On a cost-per-wear basis, it can become almost economical over time, and of course has both resale value, and the ability to be passed down from one generation to another as a desired family heirloom.

I got the blue dial 38mm AT because I planned (and now have) the latest model 36mm Explorer and knew I wanted a slightly dressier watch alongside the slightly sportier look of the Explorer. My AT is the horizontal plank style dial rather than the plain sunburst dial on the “shades” version of the AT you show on the video. The dial is absolutely gorgeous and really adds a distinctive look to the watch rather than the shades version which is, as you say, generic. AT for me given the chap’s other watches. Get the non-shades AT now before it becomes iconic too.

You are right, although technically brilliant, the Aqua Terra lacks personality. That's a charge laid at many modern Omega sports models. I would look to the Constellation and de Ville ranges, although somewhat less robust and more dressy, have more of that "it" factor. The one Omega that undoubtedly does have lasting star quality is the Speedmaster chronograph.

Totally agree with your sentiment. Good advice. Here’s my take. Just my opinion. In matters like this we know in our hearts what we want. But sometimes due to price and or availability it’s not within reach at this time. So we seek out an alternative. Then hopefully someone will validate that decision. But it almost always ends in disappointment. If you truly desire the one over the other then go for it. Otherwise wait wait wait and you’ll avoid the waste of money buying the wrong one. Also Rolex has a huge advantage over every other brand. They have a certain style and look and feel “it” that cannot be replaced by any other brand. In my opinion of course. Great video.

Hi Ash, Until a few weeks ago I would have said that the Aqua Terra would be my choice, if I could have only one nice, luxury watch! But little I knew. Now I would go for a - no not a Rolex Datejust - but an Omega Globemaster! Yes, the first Omega with a METAS certification as a Master Chronometer. The Globemaster is from Omega’s Constellation collection. And the Constellation was the most accurate watch model in Omega’s lineup who won many prizes as an observatory chronometer! It has got the famous pie pan dial from the older models and a riffled bezel like your Datejust. But the bezel is made from tungsten. So, it’s nearly impossible to scratch. With a 39mm case and a lug to lug of only 46.6mm it should wear quite well on most wrists. And I like the date at 6 which keeps the symmetry of the dial. The caliber 8900 is practically a-magnetic and you could move the hour hand without hacking the second. And yes after a couple of price increases during the last 2-3 years the Globemaster isn’t much cheaper than a Datejust. But it should be possible to get a discount from your AD. For me Omega is like Audi. It’s the role model for understatement. And remember James Bond and Sophie Marceau in Casino Royale: “… expenses watches - Rolex? Omega! Beautiful!” 😉 Best wishes Claus

Although you were taking an overall look at each watch, you omitted a couple of things in favor of the DJ. First is the Easylink bracelet. Second is the 19mm lug width. The AT bracelet looks too narrow to my eye. I currently own 3 DJ's and have owned an AT. I found the butterfly clasp to be quite uncomfortable. I probably have a weird 16mm wrist, but the Easylink and a better clasp are game changers for me. Keep up the good work.

If you want to save money, also the OP can be considered for the comparison, yes maybe without the date window but aesthetically still beautiful. While Superlatives come with +/- 2 sec on accuracy the master chrono Omegas have 0 to +5 seconds. So technically the tolerance on Superlative is better or at least on a similar level. Both are great very hard to decide but I as I already did I already went for the Rolex still searching for a nice AT now 😂

Here’s my opinion, go with the omega. It may lose its value quicker than the Rolex, but you get more functionality and a better watch for your money in my opinion. The Rolex date just is really just that, it’s a watch that tells you the time and the date he doesn’t have any other functionality than that. The Omega has a time jam feature where you can easily change the time zone if you’re traveling without stopping to watch. The anti-magnetism rating on the Rolex is only about 1000 Gause whereas on the omega it’s 15 times the anti-magnetism rating. It’s also much less recognizable in there for less likely to get stolen.

All things aside a nice comparison and great of you Ash to spend sometime to get to grips with the AquaTerra. I think certainly here in the U.K. you can quite easily get a brand new Aqua Terra for under £5k if you do a bit of haggling. Makes the Omega even more tempting. I myself, recently bought a brand new Omega Railmaster for £2,920 from the WOS group. Essentially it’s a non date, non polished AquaTerra. I absolutely love it. Such a nice understated piece and works well with most outfits. The 8806 calibre is incredibly stable and only gains about 20 seconds a month. 👍🏻

Another con of the datejust (in my opinion) is the magnifying window for the date... I personally do not like those, makes it a distraction to the beautiful dial, and makes it a bit too "tool" for such a classy watch. I don't mind it as much on a submariner, but really I wished Rolex would remove them on their datejust.

There’s not 1 datejust now that you can sell for above RRP. Furthermore, most omegas including this one you should be getting 10-20% off of RRP in 2024.

If I was able to spend 6K on a single watch in 2024, I'd prefer the... Grand Seiko hi-beat instead of both. I think their dials make these watches stand out from other models unlike the Omega AT, the movement is great too, and their cases and sizes allow to dress them up if needed. Maybe that's because I prefer the Japanese watches in general (no wonder, at least I can actually afford Orients and Seikos). I might be wrong, of course, because I don't actually have none of those expensive watches, so these are just my thoughts on the design and specs.

Hi, Ash. This is Murilo here (the one who sent you the E-mail you answered with this video). I really appreciate your reply on such a detailed video. After thinking thoroughly on which of these two watches to buy, I ended up buying a completely dofferent one, a Cartier Ronde Must, 40mm. I decided that was the way to go because adding another Rolex wouldn't do anything for me and Cartier is such an interesting and elegant brand.

I do not completely agree. I mean I agree that Aqua Terra is technically a superior watch. I agree that it is much easier to get Aqua Terra at AD. But you were talking about something, that he called "it", and Day Just had, and Aqua Terra did not. I think Aqua Terra has "it", it its "it" is not smaller than Rolex's "it". Especially if you consider AT teak dial, and not shades dials. I'll take AT over Rolex any time. BTW, I also think Daniel Craig has more "it", then "Tom Cruise".

I like both but can't understand why you state the Aqua Terra has no distinguishing features. It has Lyre lugs, "shark teeth" hour markers, a 6 o'clock date window, an arrowhead minute hand and a distinct bracelet, all unique to Omega.

I was thinking the same thing. If you think the aqua terra is plain, your not looking hard enough. Just compare the dials. Especially the ones with the teak (spelling) deck lines. Plus the rubber strap option is excellent.

A better comparison would be the date just mark two. The date just mark two is more expensive but it has a similar movement meaning dual coaxial and 70 our power reserve to the Aqua terra. You're also not mentioning that the aqua terra bling dub like the mark two are comparable in pricing. However, you can get a deal on the omega. No, I own both of them; one bitch is the Omega has a nasty crown. It looks good, but it doesn't feel good! As I said, I have both watches and they're in the both of them within two years old. My omega listed for 11,200 that's about the same as a Rolex. So I bought yet another date just part two and 36 mm as I have a 6 1/4 interest. Actually, I like to buy 41 and gave my 36 to my wife. Buy omega has its own peel. Mine is equipped with the rubber strap and deployment buckle. I do not like the omega bracelet nearly as well. It's the Rolex. In fact, they're not even in the same league. The Mark two is the world different than a plain old day date. The mark two has a much better bracelet especially with the glide lol and the overall feel of the new Jubilee bracelet. In summary, the aqua terra kills the standard OP. It's also more expensive. Dr. Otero does not equal the Rolex Mark two mostly because of the bracelet. Plus you get a extra nice thing with the omega that you merely glossed over and that's the finish work on the movement with dual sapphire crystals and antireflective coating. Without anti-reflective coating it can be difficult to see the date correctly. That being said, the omega has an almost useless bait window. It is teeny!! Way too small to be useful. On the 41 it looks minuscule. I have a 39 and it's semi-OK if I had my bifocals shot but really quite difficult to look at. Those are my pics and I'm sticking with it. Thanks for the video.

I'd rather have 2 Aqua Terra's in different colors than 1 Datejust for almost the same price. They're comparable watches and very similarly appealing in looks. Rolex has the better name and retains it's value more, but for my hard earned money, I'll take the Omega's every time.

Outside of the Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, Omega is like driving a Genesis. You will constantly have to explain why you chose it. I do admit that Rolex is considered far better than it is. My Royal Oak is very rarely noticed. Depending on what you buy your watches for, the ladies will always lock onto a Rolex over any other watch. My opinion, we will never return to the 2000's where watch buyers sought diversity. In this social media world people will seek in mass: Rolex, Patek, AP, VC, or reach for a Richard Mille and FP Journe. It is too hard to get anything serviced. The rest will go away.

I love my Aquaterra day date a lot but the high polish center links scratch just looking at them. My vintage Datejusts get way more wrist time because of that. However, it’s his money and he should buy what he likes and wear it in good health.
