Roland Jupiter X - Jupiter 8 Sounds Demo

Музыка

A short demo showcasing just a few of the abilities of the Roland Jupiter X synthesizer. In this video I focus more on the filter, polyphony, and Jupiter 8 model sounds, stacking them in different ways and playing around with the envelopes. Other than a few quirks, Roland definitely hit a home run with this.
The beginning of the video shows how you hear very minimal stepping between the values when you adjust the filter. The sweeps are very smooth and under control. You may find this to be repetitive, but it shows off the entire range. After that I try to demonstrate how the voices seem to play out indefinitely because of the voice/polyphony headroom. I tried to hold certain notes while adding on extra notes to see if you could hear any voices dropping out. I couldn't hear any drop.
I probably should have disabled the onboard delay that was playing and just used the reverb, and tried to stereo pan the voices out during the quad-stack portion better, just to showcase how powerful this keyboard really is. Another thing you'll find, which I thought was cool, is how you can even get the voices to pan around, just as if it were a real analog synth with dedicated voice cards, with internal trim pots for the stereo field panning. That they recreated that through software is an awesome touch. Sit down with this synth and press the same key over and over on certain models/patches, and you'll hear what I mean. Definitely a fun synth to play around with and worth the money.
In my opinion the only way to make the Jupiter X better would be to make the screen slightly larger, and to replace some of the faders with encoder knobs. The faders look more like the Jupiter 8, but encoders in their place in some areas would be more usable, especially for the Amp Level adjustment.

Nice sounds demo. Sounds kinda Oberheim with the Van Halen sounds. The resolution is beautiful (0-1023) and the aging and temperature mods are juicy! It sounds quite analog except for the delay ... does this have a vocoder? I have a Roland Juno di , Yamaha motor Xs and korg m3 fully upgraded anti d love it but this gives me gear lust! This and a v-synth (hope Roland makes a new version) will be all I would ever need!

Is the jupiter X digital or analog? Which is closer to the old Jupiter 8, the jupiter 80 or the Jupiter x? I totally adore the old one. Jupiter X sounds amazing...

  • @adrianbroughton9752

    @adrianbroughton9752

Jupiter-X is 100% digital but the analog modelling logic is a generation or two better/more sophisticated than the Jupiter-80 was. From all accounts the Jupiter-X analog modelling isn't *quite* as accurate as the ACB modelling of the System-8, but it's very close and can provide a lot more polyphony due to lower processing requirements. The fact the Jupiter-X has a ton more features and MUCH wider sonic palette compared to the System-8 means it's probably a better choice for most people. But when it comes to pure analog modelling I still think the System-8 is Roland's best.

  • @galaxiesmerge_original

@@adrianbroughton9752 I have owned both and currently keep and own the JUPITER-X which is actually a much more powerful modeling synthesizer due to the ZenCore so it sounds better than the Jupiter-80 if you are looking for models of the previous generation "Jupiter" series. My view is that Jupiter-X does so much more. All the drum sounds of the CR-78, and I sold both my CR-78 and CR-68 which were fully supplied with all the MIDI tools does not approach my satisfaction with the Jupiter-X libraries. This is a no-brainer to purchase!

Adrian Broughton - I agree. I love my System-8, and have several System-1/1m units. My only real complaint is that I wish Roland had built the System-8 with color selectable LED lighted controls, but I can dim them I’d turn them off. To me the System-8 does sound very analog, but goes beyond what earlier analog synths could do. Myself I cannot justify getting a Jupiter-X since it is twice the price of a System-8.

It really would have been cool to have some actual analog osc's, but the way Roland coded their digital osc's makes more sense from a long-term point of view. You don't ever have to worry about solid state components wearing out with this synth. All of the component aging can be replicated digitally using the onboard synth "age" parameter.

I totally agree about the lights being kind of annoying. Really though they're not quite as bright as they look in the video, and the angle that you see them from while playing makes them look less bright. Roland continues the Jupiter line with more reliable instruments. The Jupiter X has a metal body and would be great for a touring musician much like the Jupiter 8 was. If a crowd hears Jump played on a Jupiter 8 or X they dont care. If someone downloads a song they dont care if its digital hardware or analog hardware or computer vst. I think the Jupiter X sounds close enough for a band and great for home EDM studios. At least we dont have to worry about dead oscillators and recallibrations.

It's funny to read your comment. Do you own any analogue classics? I do - I own most of them. The Jupiter-X has closed the gap between the model of reality and the reality itself. I own some of the finest gear in the world and that line you wrote about "girth" and "richness" and "liquidity" is just far off the mark. I mean, if those words mean something to anyone but you I get that it's your way to share. But, consider this aspect: your views or hearing of reality may not actually be everyone else's reality. Your opinion is respected - so don't get me wrong - but you write like you are some kind of "authority" on the subject and so it does not land like a serious comment. I think you should do an actual A/B compare and put that on youtube for the rest of us who don't perhaps know as much as you might. I am happy to be proven wrong.

It doesn't really sound like one of the original Jupiters to me.. doesn't even sound analog at all, just flat digital and compressed. Hands down..It's an absolutely overpriced digital Keyboard for what it does, that doesn't share anything in common with the originals except parts of the housing..

Honestly Roland could have done much better with the default programming to make it more "Jupiter 8-y". By default most of the patches have the analog drift, detuning and synth age parameters turned off. If you start tweaking the advanced settings you can get it to sound more "analog-y". It has that brassy sound that's hard to replicate once you start playing with it. I was really surprised once I learned more about the power under the hood.

To be fair though, none of the Jupiter 8's on hit recordings have ever been the "real" or "raw" sound of the synths though. The sound of the consoles they were recorded through, and their preamps, and any other external processing they were piped through to spruce them up all colored the sound anyway. In a way the "real" sound of a Jupiter 8 depends on how you look at it. The Jupiter-X can nail the sound of every version and variation of the Jupiter 8 when you really dig into the system and patch parameters.

Omnisphere better than hardware? Never. I have Omnisphere 2 as well as tons of hardware synths. I love software. But it sounds very flat to me. No sonic flavor. Hardware always sounds big and more dynamic to me. And you really can tell the difference. You also still lack the real-time control and satisfaction of playing an instrument.

Seems as if most people who demo synths on youtube have no minds of their own to invent unheard of patches and play different chord changes and riffs. It's the same old redundant 80's sound over and over. It's become boring and doesn't demonstrate the technical advantages this synth has over the 80s synths that typified that played-out sound.

The Jupiter-X is amazing and I guarantee none will hear the difference between it and analog synths in a mix. Sure, everything synth heard on its own has a sound. Mix em together and that so called sound is just part of the mix. Some synths are actually really unique (PPG, CS-80) but only because entire tracks were built with just them alone. The Jupiter-X is a fine Jupiter because the name "Jupiter" does not mean "analog" if you read Roland's naming convention, it actually means: "Our Current Best Synth".

@@peterheijnen3197 Yea Goby is speaking the language of bullshit. I am with you Peter, Goby is full of shit. This synth sounds great and sounds rich and analog when using the analog models. I have a Jupiter 6, I find I am using the X a lot more because of it's rich sound and much more complex sound design capabilities. Although it kind of cool to run the JP6 through the X's internal FX section.
