Great video! I think that a lot of musicians play the Fantom and are not so impresed by the internal sounds. But the panel and DAW integration are really why you should buy one and why it's a true 2023 workstation.

Love your video. I've long considered a StudioLive in my own setup. The Fantom's DAW control has been a gamechanger for me. I discovered OBS during the first year I bought the Fantom. Most fun I've ever had for sure.

It works with Ableton Live too. But unfortunately not with your DAW of choice. Studio One. I saw your last video in which you said goodbye to the Fantom lol!

After watching your videos for a long time I was convinced that Yamaha was the way to go because of the polyphony issue on the fantom. I then got the MODX8+ feeling that I was going to miss out on the DAW control on the fantom. I was pleasantly surprised that I could do everything you showed here on the MODX8+ using the DAW remote feature with Ableton. That feature solves everything for me. The controls are exhaustive and I didn't need to touch my PC about 98% of the time.

I have just realised that to get the fantom to work as you discuss you have to open logic with Rosetta from get info worth a mention as it is not pure apple silicon compatible yet!

The more I use my Fantom 08 and learn its features, the more I am impressed with it. Roland recently released a reference guide (PDF) for Fantom 0 (not the user guide) that I recommend to anyone using the keyboard.

Great video! Love that integration. You explain it so well. Thanks so much! Surprised that Roland did something right for a change (as far as the controller aspect)..😃 The hardware text is kinda blurry, but maybe it's the focus (or youtube compression).

Hi Darrick: I know this is the wrong place for this comment but I own a NORD Stage 3 and I LOVE it! I just bought a Yamaha MODX+6 , we’ll actually traded even for my Yamaha CP 73 . Here’s my question. I LOVE the stage 3 because of SONG MODE! I play with various bands and it’s made my live performances a breeze. But I want to incorporate the MODX into my live setup. How would you do that? Run the MODX off the Nord as the main board and use the MODX sounds to compliment? I’m at a loss here. I LOVE the sequencing and sounds (especially organs and EP’s on the Yamaha. But the Piano sounds and especially Song Mode on the Nord I need as I play with several different bands . How would YOU set up these two boards for live performances so that I have the power and sounds of both boards but using the Nord to control Both? Please advise and thanks. Love your channel.

I have an RD-2000. As far as MIDI integration, what does the Fantom do that the RD-2000 doesn't do, besides the onscreen integration with Logic Pro? Also, does the Fantom have the same on screen integration with Studio One and other DAWs?

The main difference between the RD-2000 and Fantom MIDI integration is the RD-2000 can only control 8 zones at once (which is plenty for a Stage Piano) but the Fantoms can control 16 per scene. Not to mention the RD-2000 doesn’t really have dedicated transport controls like “start,” “stop,” “record,” etc. And then of course there will be no real feedback on the screen. I’m not talking about graphic sliders, and panning knobs. I mean basic stuff like what measure you are currently on, time signature, etc. You will have to look at your computer for everything. With that said the MIDI integration is still great on the RD because you can easily switch between internal and external sounds and merge them together inside of a program just like the Fantom. The Fantom has tight DAW integration with Ableton Live, Logic and MainStage. Yes it can be used with any DAW as all DAW’s use MIDI/Audio. But you will not have the interactive graphic interface with DAWs like Studio One. I’m sure that Roland had to get access to Ableton Live’s (and Apple’s Logic/MainStage) source code in order to program the Fantom in such a fashion. Source code is proprietary and a tightly guarded secret for all tech companies. It’s akin to a secret recipe. Once you have someone’s recipe you can make the same exact dish yourself. I’ve heard Roland reached out to all of the major DAW companies and only Ableton and Apple obliged them.

I am on the fence about getting a Fantom-0. I don’t play keyboards out, only bass, so the keyboard will stay in my home studio. I have a Keylab 88 MK2, but it doesn’t play sounds and doesn’t have the screen that the Fantom does which is a big plus. Do you have/use Roland Cloud? I’ve had others tell me that having a Fantom and Roland could and only using it in the studio is pretty much redundant with Galaxias and Zenology. Any thoughts there? And as I type this my studio system isn't able to contact Roland Cloud, so they must be done. Great timing! LOL Thanks in advance for any info you can share LS

It’s a feature in the VST I was using that allows you to change the fingering styles of the Bass. It’s Native Instruments Prime Bass.

Derek, with all the software updates they’ve done. Have you found the Fantom issues to be fixed?

I do use the Fantom's sounds. Mostly their "synth" sounds. Pads, leads, synth basses, etc are often Fantom sounds.

Did I hear correctly that your DAW is Logic? That mixer looks interesting, but I'm always wary of PreSonus mixer/controller functionality potentially integrating great with Studio One but not as well with other DAWs. Have you run into any limitations in that regard? Thanks for the breakdown, BTW. This was very helpful information. Really tempting me toward the Fantom.

I don't actually use the DAW integration on the Presonus. I use it as an audio interface but not a control surface to control my DAWs. Sorry for the confusion.

I had the 32 channel Studiolive Series 3, but in the end I found it didn't really add anything to my Presonus Studio One 5 setup. The integration with Studio One is impressive, but then you have to decide which unit should be between your speakers, your master keyboard or the mixer. I downgraded to the Presonus ioSTATION24C, which has the transport and one fader and mute /solo / automation read /write which is enough for me. I then can have my NI Komplete Kontrol S88 MKII keyboard in front of the monitors (video and audio).

I never actually use the "DAW Control" from the Presonus. It's too much memorization in order to make it all work. And it doesn't really save me any time. I use it because I have so many keyboards in my studio and multiple microphones. I like the fact that I can route anything anywhere when hooked up to the Presonus. And I appreciate the onboard effects processing as well. Lastly, I do live sound so it can serve in both capacities. But, like you said, for many people, it's simply unnecessary. A dedicated control service works far better for controlling a DAW I my opinion. Sounds like you have a great setup!

The Quiet PC I have running Studio One 5 with the NI Komplete Ultimate 11 and NI's Symphonic Series and a few other stuff, means I have a studio I could only dream of when a kid. I also have the AKAI MPC Key 61 with a Tascam Model 24 when I want to be totally out of the computer and that setup has replaced all my hard disk recorders and mixer. Hey Darrick, sorry if I wasn't paying attention, but I take it that all your keyboards are connected to the computer via USB, and then in Logic you specify the MIDI destination, right? Also, that synth brass sound on the Montage was super delicious, is it a factory preset or something you made? You are mostly definitely right about the Roland keyboard is such a good MIDI keyboard that integrates well with Logic (and Ableton, my two favourite DAWs!), I don't think that Yamaha or Korg would over take them here, I'm starting to think they all agree who should be best in what. 😅

He Tony! The only keyboard that is hooked up to my computer is the Fantom. My keyboards and MPC One are all connected to the Fantom. The Brass sound is a factory patch but I made a few edits to the MOD Wheel parameters and a few parts to give it a fuller sound. I’d have to check which exact performance it was because I haven’t used the stock sound since I created my own.

Darrick you have helped me so much bro. I'm still none the wiser as how you have everything speaking to each other MIDI and audio? Do you use some kind of MIDI interface to connect and sync? I have a fantom 8(still hanging in waiting for an update:)) and an MPC Live 2. I would like to have the option of having everything connected and going into my DAW, just like you have. I need a mixer I guess but not able to afford the one you have. Would you know if the 16.0.2 USB StudioLive would cut the mustard?

If what you have is a Fantom 8, MPC Live 2 and a computer, you don't need anything else to connect everything. The Fantom can do it all. Connect the Fantom to the computer via the USB B port. Select the Fantom 8 as your audio interface in your DAW. Connect a MIDI out (the Fantom has 2) to the MIDI In on the MPC Live 2. This will allow you to play the MPC from the Fantom. Connect the Main Outs of the MPC to the inputs on the Fantom. The Fantom will be able to pass both audio and MIDI to your computer. The audio from the MPC will also get passed through the Fantom to the computer.

I'm using the Fantom USB to DAW and want to set up the Fantom to play the MPC but I mainly want to program drums on the MPC and want my DAW, The fantom and MPC all to start at the same time.

Nice set up. Maybe I’ll have something as flexible when the quality of my output warrants the investment. As for now, I flip flop between MPC 2.0 Software (using the Studio Mk2 and Mini MPK Plus) on two computers, Ableton Live, Studio One, a MPC One, MPC Live II, and MPC Key 61. Sounds are via Roland Integra-7, J-6, D-05, S-1, Korg Volca FM2, Yamaha Reface DX, and various VSTs. It’s not perfect but it works and is commensurate with my current output. I use a Casio PX-560 for playing and MZ-X500 for spit balling ideas unconnected. My physical instrument purchases are complete. When the composition skills warrant more hardware, it will be an interface on deck. None of this needs to provide a financial return on investment because it won’t. Roland seems to have nice DAW / interface integration.

You have some great equipment in my opinion. While I love the Fantom I know there are things about it that are absolute deal-breakers for many. If all I owned was an outdated workstation like a Roland XP-80 or Korg Triton and was looking to upgrade, the Fantom would not be what I get. It's a nice to have but not a must have for what I do.

Hey Darrick, I was thinking about getting a Korg Kronos 2. Even though they're discontinued now, I could still get one used. But I was wondering if you still think that the Korg Kronos 2 is still the most powerful workstation out there. If not, then what would be the most powerful workstation in your opinion?

Overall, yes the Kronos is still the most powerful workstation around. The polyphony architecture is better than the Fantom. The sequencer is not a limited pattern sequencer but a full-featured sequencer that allows you to change time signatures and tempos in the middle of a song, no 64-Bar limits etc. The sampler is also fully featured allowing you to timestretch, pitch shifting, and such. The Fantom does not allow this. In depth sound design, the Kronos wins too. For example the HD-1 sound engine allows you to have 8 different velocity zones per oscillator when working with samples. I could go on. But the real question you must ask yourself is what do you really need. Do you really spend time creating your own multisamples? Do you use a DAW to record music or do you want to use your keyboard for that? Are you even in to sampling at all? In all honesty, the Kronos has a ton of features most people will never even use. I still have my Kronos and I love it. But, I have better intuitive options for sampling. I use a DAW for recording songs not a workstation. If I am going to engage in in depth synthesis and sound design, I will use Omnisphere, which is in another universe as far as power is concerned. So, what I need from a keyboard is something that enhances my workflow, allows me to take my studio work into a live scenario seamlessly. I need a keyboard that plays nicely with other keyboards. A keyboard that can be a mini studio (with a computer) away from the studio. The Fantom can power my vocal mics with phantom power, if I am recording away from my studio the Kronos cannot do this. So the Fantom became my main keyboard because of how it integrates better into a modern setup.

Love the Kronos 2 in general, hopefully Korg will make the new version as good as Fantom regarding studio integration with your DAW. The new Montage should be a killer board arriving later this year too!

Would you please tell me how does Roland Fantom integrate with Cubase? Could I use it optimally as a DAW controller like you do with your DAW, or it’s impossible, because Yamaha owns the Cubase and that’s why I have to use MODX or Montage as DAW controller for Cubase. Thanks!

You can certainly use the Fantom with Cubase. But the tight DAW integration you saw me use with Logic is not an available feature on the Fantom. It has the tight DAW integration with Logic, Ableton, and MainStage. Outside of those, there is no real advantage of using the Fantom as a controller over other keyboards.

@@darrickkeels6387 Thank you for the answer! BTW Did you hear that Roland will add ACB modeling Virtual Analog sound engine to the flagship Fantom, probably this month? If it will have all the possibilities as System 8 (8 notes of polyphony, number of plug out synths etc), I may consider it. But on the other side I would be disappointed because I bought System 8 few months ago. It’s very cheap built, I don’t think you would like it, but I bought it just because of the sound. It sounds beautiful and powerful like real Roland classic analog synths. There are available even some rare classic plug out synths like semi modular System 100. I guess it would be nice to use System 100 on Fantom with the big screen and if they visualize patching like it’s the case in DAW, instead of menu diving like on System 8. But it’s only plug out synth that needs menu diving, because it has second LFO and other modules that are not available with controllers on System 8. I suppose Roland is doing it because Yamaha with new Montage M (re)introduced their AN-X VA engine. But honestly I’m not impressed with Montage M. It’s too expensive and I expected more synth engines. There is no even wavetable synthesis. EX5 was Yamaha’s last good synth workstation with all Yamaha synth engines, including VL physical modeling, that I was hoping Yamaha would reintroduce with new Montage M, but after since Motif, Yamaha focused on samples and bread and butter sounds. But despite that, they still don’t have separate organ and piano engines, they bet all on AWM2 sample based engine. They missed opportunity to make something really new and mind blowing and unique on the current market. Technology is advanced comparing to the 90s when Yamaha made first hardware physical modeling synth VL-1. It wasn’t successful when it was released, because in the 90s samples were more popular than ever. It was very expensive with limited polyphony. But today if they would reintroduce and improve VL-1 physical modeling engine, it would be awesome! We could make unique sounds that sound like real instruments. BTW May I ask you, do you have in plans getting new Montage M? It would be nice to see your review, because synthfluencers are praising every feature in every synth. It’s difficult to find honest synth review in last few years that is on PROFESSIONAL level. :)

This is from Roland’s site (have they updated the full integration with the EX upgrade or had the website always said this? It specifically mentions Cubase. I can’t find any details anywhere 😂: “Deep DAW integration. FANTOM EX flows effortlessly into any computer-based production setup. I needed an extra slab to practice classical piano at night and found a Fantom 8 for $2k in mint condition. Given that the fantom has a pha50 action and decent pianos, it was a no brainer. Plus i got all the extra workstation stuff. However, i mostly use it as a really good digital piano.

Yeah the polyphony limitations have not changed. Some people have no issues. It's a matter of playing style and sound choice.

Will Roland fix the polyphony problem? Can that be solved with software update?

Roland doesn't believe there is a "problem." Technically there isn't. It's a limitation. Unfortunately Roland is behind their competitors in this department.

Concerning the Polyphony, l saw a message that you can actually control through the voice reserve mode in the zone edit. I am yet to confirm anyway.

Yes there are voice reserve settings in the Zone Parameters. I showed that in my video. However, there was no setting that kept the voices from dropping out.

it is analog! its a mixer, your converting to digital but you cant get into any computer in analog. so its analog to digital mixing. just like any out board pre amp is analog to digital. if you want pure analog its still not possible because you cant make a cd without converting to digital, you cant send a stream or download music without digitizing it first. so all music is analog to digital in this day and age.

My Presonus mixer is a digital mixer not analog. While everything does end up as digital in today's world, how they get there is different. An analog mixer does all of its processing using analog circuits. When you turn knobs to adjust the EQ, Compression, Gates, or any processing, you are actually altering an electrical current. The signal is converted to digital on its way out of the mixer (to a computer) as a final step. A digital mixer converts an analog signal into a digital one immediately after the signal comes in. The EQ, Compression, Gate, even the volume is all digital manipulation. The changes you make are simply changing the sequence of the binary code. There is no actual electrical current being changed during processing. This does make a difference in the sound. Hence, major studios are willing to pay $70K-$100,000K+ for analog mixing consoles because the high-end circuitry inside makes a difference in the sound. Digital mixers offer greater flexibility and routing options in general because moving a digital signal around a mixer is simply computer programming. Moving an electrical current around in a variety of different ways requires a lot more work internally.

Looks like Montage/MODX supports a list of DAWs, maybe not in the same way as Fantom. One more thing I wish the Fantom did is stream the input through a parallel USB channel like the Yamahas do. Did not know Yamaha added the hybrid MIDI channel mode. kzread.info11ccxrU2QzY?feature=share

Yes, I feel the Montage/MODX is the second best DAW integration in a hardware keyboard. And yes it has profile settings for Pro Tools, Live , Logic and Cubase. However, Yamaha seemed to just do all of their own programming to communicate with the DAWs. It is a pretty slick system. The major difference between the Roland and the Yamaha is that Roland seemed to get permission from Apple and Ableton to access their source code. Hence, Live on the Fantom looks like a miniature verson of the actual DAW. Same with Logic/MainStage. If you know your way around Ableton Live, you will easily be able to navigate your way around the Fantom when in DAW mode. This is not true of the Yamahas. You have to learn how to navigate your DAW through the Montage. You may know your Montage and know your DAW. But operating the DAW through the Montage will be a bit of a learning curve. It's functional and works. But it is far from a seamless experience in which your software and hardware seem to function as one.

I wish Roland would quadruple the number of Scene slots. 500 is not very many, given that it’s for both Songs and Combis, and any single tones used in a set list have to be in a Scene first. If I want to use 20 different tone-wheel organs, that’s 20 Scenes I have to use up, since they can only be on Part 2. We could use a VST sound manager too, like the Integra-7 had, so we don’t have to use up Scenes for multi track DAW sound assignments. Of course there is Zenology, but it doesn’t have all the same engines as the Fantom.

Yes more scenes would be amazing. Especially because like you said a scene can be a song, combination or single tones. I believe this is a highly requested feature in the community.

Just out of curiosity, if you were to use all 500 scenes with custom sounds and patterns, how much of the internal storage would be eaten up? Ik the fantom is a2gig storage, just wondering how quickly it fills up if you also import samples/back tracks to the sample pad

Just need to stop treating the loyal customers like shit,if you didn't buy the enzyme update,get a good deal, but if you did they are charging you 50 bucks more for the EX update 🤬🤬🤬 just be aware and spread the word,most musicians don't have extra money to throw away.

Roland is offering a deal to customers who purchased the N'Zyme update. So in my opinion they are not treating their loyal customers poorly. With that said the EX Update is not a minor update and comes with a whole new set of instruments like an ACB Synth engine, V-Piano German Grand, effects and so on. The new Montage M came out and added another sound engine (ANX), new effects, poly aftertouch, more memory, a different operating system, but the reality is, it's very very similar to the original Montage in many ways. Same AWM2 sounds, same FM engine, same pianos, basses, drums, strings, etc. Upgrading to a Montage M8X will cost you $4500. The people who have the original Montage will receive no more updates. I think Roland adding as many features as they did for $199 is a bargain. The V-Piano German Grand costs $150 by itself. The only way to get ACB sounds in a hardware unit is to purchase a Roland System 8 keyboard. You can purchase one for $1750. They've added tight DAW integration with Cubase. Lastly, they've done a ton of updates for free. All of the SuperNatural Sounds, Organ Sound Engine, Zencore Expansion synth packs, etc have all been free. At some point, companies need to make money. The cool thing is, you have a choice. You could choose not to upgrade and continue to use you Fantom the way it is. New sounds, sound engines, effects, used to require a new keyboard purchase. I don't think an upgrade for $200 or less is really anything to complain about.

​@darrickkeels6387 yeah, I'm with you. Everyone has been complaining about this particular point, where they already bought n/Zyme, so the upgrade is a ripoff. But I don't agree with that. There is so much more in the upgrade, beyond n/Zyme.

Literally at 11:00 the I start talking about the Fantom itself lol.

Omg 11 mins before the actual content and even then your playing a vst. I think you need to script you videos, a search of Roland fantom used in a recording studio for an album bought me here, so probably not your fault but then your title is slightly misleading and the video seems to have no direction. Just my opinion.

Yes because otherwise my entire comment section would be filled with questions about how I have the audio routed in my setup and if everything was coming through the Fantom. Or questions about how I get samples from the Fantom into the MPC, etc. It really easy to just scroll ahead on KZread.
