Im writing my bachelor thesis about this and had difficulties to get going. Then I found this conversation and this is truly one of the best analyses I found on the topic until now. They are absolutely amazing! Thanks for uploading this. Helped me a lot.

Not to leap to the defence of the BBC or anything, but they did air a pretty interesting Storyville film about the Rojava situation back in 2017, presented by the former British diplomat Carne Ross and how Rojava sparked his "conversion" to anarchism. It's called Accidental Anarchist and you can probably find it on your video-sharing site of choice. He did a TED talk about the film too, which is on KZread.

@@johnj3636 Of course, the problem with cutting military support to Turkey _(and this is not an argument against, just an observation)_ is that it pushes them closer to Russia. The EU needs to invest them in trade and give them something to lose. Can't turn a bad dog with a big stick.

Libertarianism originally only referred to libertarian socialism and anarchism. It was the American right-libertarians who co-opted the term (theres a Murray rothbard quote where he proudly acknowledges this). Libertarian Socialism refers to (at its core) workers control over the means of production in the absence of a state

Libertarianism is and always has been anti-captalist. American 'libertarianism' was a co-opting of the language of anarchists and socialists.

The white American dude started out by objectifying the Kurdish movement and people as sources of realization of ideals he holds, and viewed their movement from his overly theoretical and Western perspective. Later same dude went and committed a bunch of logical fallacies when the topic of people needing to cut down on meat consumption came up. You cannot attack the supply side without attacking the demand side, if you want to undermine an industry. Just because it sounds kind of ascetic and austerity-ish, doesn't make it wrong. It is not state-imposed austerity: it's not imposed at all, but voluntary, and is not being done to save money for a government that spends more on its military, etc., but is a case of withholding support from an industry that is seriously harmful. He just declared it wasn't true that people will be better off in the future if we now do things like eat less meat, without ever substantiating that claim. The evidence is not on his side when it comes to that claim. This isn't the first time there's been fauxgressive stuff on Novara Media. I still support them and am a fan of Ash Sarkar, but I feel like they could pick better guests sometimes. I suggest fewer white people and more POC, and less theory-heavy and more practical and intuitive.

Because skin colour affects your life experience and your life experience affects your values. You’re not “against white people” for acknowledging that. But if you deny the need for the inclusion of non white voices then you are, necessarily, racist

@zero sugar It is indeed an issue of merit. The merit of someone to talk about and on behalf of another group of people, is severely limited and distorted by them not having lived the experience of that group of people. That's why there should be more working class voices in parliament. That's why there should be more non white people in the media. The guest on the show wasn't an expert in Kurdish studies or someone with extensive experience of the conditions in the region, and the merit of the conversation may have been improved had his seat been taken by a Kurdish academic, or activist from Syria or Turkey. There is a lot or romanticisation within the left of "The Kurds", and it's quite reasonable to call it out. A romanticisation which grows out of ignorance, and is given a platform by privilege, is a legitimate thing to challenge.

Being a racist is not going to stop racism, in-fact it will divide us, we need White people on our side they are not the enemy. Also the White guy you mention is Jewish which throughout history have not been seen as White and have been brutally oppressed.

@S I fell like they are trying to have a relatively balanced variety of guests but they are of course faced with the problem that a) social minorities are by definition less represented and therefor it is harder to find more of them in positions where they have more to tell than just their life story, which might very well be interesting and sometimes be representative of many others but firstly I think they are already sometimes doing something like that, and secondly it is only a small part of what their Idea of Novara Media seems to be, mirroring how in left-wing-politics of course the emanzipation of everyone should be a core matter, because otherwise you are just replacing the existing classes with new ones, and/but the real battle it is about, is the dissolution of class structure, locally and globally. I sadly have to agree partly on your second point, (sadly because I was hoping you were misrepresenting him when I had not come to that part yet) Of course a (massive) restriction of meat consumption has to happen I agree with his point that it should not be done in a neo-liberal way, blaming the consumers who sometimes can not afford to eat "better" food (or anything for that matter, but that's beside the point here), but instead it is the job of politics to enact laws that ensure that all our production is sustainable. And I disagree with him in so far as I believe that it would be accepted by large parts of the people, if the scarce goods (mostly meat in that case) were not distributed in a purely marked-based way but by rationing that guarantees everyone the right to some meat (maybe twice a month or something) and also restricts the ability to buy more if you have the money accordingly. (I admittetly have not worked out how much is sustainable for our global population so don't pin me down on the numbers) Not sure what you mean with fauxgressive (I mean I get the word, I just don't really know what you refer to with it). I also disagree with the less theory-heavy and more practical and intuitive, because I don't really understand how you would achieve that in an interview format, but that might also be just personal taste.

We can't do babysitting job for Kurds , they should be able to defend themselves .
