After a few delays the new Rogue CB-4 is in and it's already kicking my ass. Is it enough to replace the Kabuki as the best buffalo style bar available?

Crazy use case, I am actually considering it for OHP in the basement. I have 56" between my J cups on the side of the rack and currently using a Texas Squat Bar. I actually like the thicker bars in my OHP or bench. Glad you got it and it didn't disappoint!

I'd go with a real camber bar which would be cheaper, and work better!
Appreciate the Shout-out. Glad we got those working in time, (not that it was much of a rush before those bars started shipping). Although its not really much of an innovation, Im glad to see more options available for the consumer. However, I would be cautious with Kabukis finishes, having had 8 bars from them now, only 3 have come out with a great finish. My big worry with the CB-4 would be grip strain on such a thick girthy shaft.

Thanks for getting out your first impression quickly! I have been interested in this bar, but the truth is I don’t need it because thankfully, my shoulder issues haven’t impeded my squats for years. Btw, you’ve never looked smaller behind a bar than you do with that thing. No slight, it’s just the size is quite obvious on camera and it wouldn’t even fit in frame most of the video! Crazy

If I really want to feel small I go and watch the Arnold competition where this was used to see how I stack up against the world's strongest men lol.
My favourtie bar for squatting. (I can't low bar squat with a squat for long before my elbows light up) And I used to train all the time the Duffalo. The extra aggressive knurling with the bar biting into your shirt/suit combined with the extra thickness make it WAY MORE STABLE on your back -- and results in bigger squats and more quality sets at that load.

It’s a great bar!
Received my bar this weekend. Just to share based on feedback Brandon provided. I think Rouge responded to the packaging issues. Mine was packed in the same style but with extra reinforced ends and what seemed like more packaging around the bar. They even had make shift handles on the package to make it easier to move around for my poor UPS driver. I agree that the finish is not as nice as my other Rouge bars but to me looks nice. I was worried a bit with all the high intensity close ups. I am picky but maybe my expectations were a bit lowered based on feedback - so I was happy with how it looks. The sleeves are not flared up at exactly the same rate. It is nowhere to the level of Brandon's bar but it is not perfect. Its about 3/4" on one side and maybe an 1" on the other side. Maybe not even that much. You can kind of tell when it is on the ground but not noticeable to me in the rack. For me given the thickness of the bar I can live with this slight difference. I'm not sure if other Buffalo bars also have this challenge. Bottom line I love mine. It was really comfortable on my back and I just think the thing is cool! Here is to hoping I can get 3 plates on it at some point! That is my dream goal for an older new lifter!

Hah yeah I think if you have a SSB already this is prob overkill, but overkill can be very enjoyable lol.
Rouge definitely needs to step up their packaging. I had to send a rackable curl bar back before due to damage during shipping. I've had others arrive with damaged packaging but the bars were ok. I bought some beater bars from York Barbell, about half the price of any Rouge bar, and they put more care into the packaging than Rouge ever has. Protective end caps, foam around the collars, etc.. While I'm still a huge fan of Rouge, I expect more when spending $300 dollars and up for a bar. It's sucks having to send shit back! Thanks for the video. Love the channel.

I do think they need to improve as well, I do believe part of the blame is on the shipping company and handling it, but Rogue should know by now the bar is going to be mishandled and should account for it on their end.

Another great review! Got more of a general question - having garbage shoulders (2 shoulder surgeries) my go-to bar for squats is my old Elitefts SSB (it used to be called their spider yoke or something like that). It's old, it's heavy (80lbs) but it does the job well enough. Would the CB-4 feel more like a traditional back squat or does it pitch you forward like an SSB? When I train for a meet, moving back to a traditional bar takes several weeks before my shoulders get some flexibility/mobility back. Wondering if it would be a quicker transition with a cambered bar.
@BasementBrandon
2 жыл бұрын
It still puts the weights more forward than a traditional back squat. I think a SSB might be more manipulatable since you can push the handles up or down to change the position.
I just received my bar yesterday and it was packed so well it took me a huge chunk of time to get bar out. So far I'm extremely impressed. I had lusted after the Kabuki but couldn't justify the added cost. I'm very impressed with the bar so far. Honestly, after seeing it in person I'm surprised it doesn't cost more.

The weight tends to be out in front more than a normal backsquat b/c of the camber. Sounds like maybe a marrs bar may be more up your alley.
Hey Brandon. I hope you had a nice thanksgiving. I picked up the kabuki PR deadlift bar on black Friday. Black oxide . I'm really excited and I wanted to thank you for your assistance and advice on which one would be best for me . Now If I may I would like to ask you the same about the duffalo and CB4 . Now that you have had time with the CB4 do you find that the girth is a bit too much , specifically for.presses ? And is the fact that the duffalo flips in rack a big deal or is it easy to turn just like the Kadillac bar ? Again , if money is not an issue which would you purchase now with your insight on said bars ? If it's the duffalo I can pick up the black oxide today with the cyber Monday discount before they're gone. Ok Brandon. Thank you for all your help . You're the best ! P.S The discount always feels good but even at full price it would not prevent me from purchasing. Ah , so much equipment to torment myself with .lol

Hey James. The bars are pretty similar in use. I don't find the 38mm to be too big. Regardless of which bar you get, they do have a propensity to flip. I've found using blocks (duffalo or cb4) to be the best (but unfortunately most expensive) solution. In terms of which bar I'd suggest, it really could go either way. I find I use my CB4 more, but I would have no issues using the Duffalo instead. I think it comes down to total cost to you, lead times, and who you'd rather support.
Great review B. Any issues with the cb4 sliding or possibly even tipping when loading plates? I have the fringes port longhorn and the ghost cups with the duffalo inserts, and even though it prevents the longhorn from flipping (meaning the curve doesn’t flip to the bottom), it tends to slide sometimes to one side when loading a plate, and sometimes I worry that the bar will tip over to the side which it almost has onetime and since then I don’t really use the bar because of that. Would love your thoughts on this as I intend to purchase the cb4 bar and get the koala inserts if it means that it is safer than the longhorn bar I have. Thanks! Also, not sure if it matters but I currently use a rep pr5000v2. Not sure if the 47 inch width makes a difference than your rogue 49inch width.

The curve itself is about the same. The main difference is the Kabukis ends earlier and the sleeves flatten out more where the rogue keeps going for a few more inches.

Maybe! The marrs has always looked a bit funky to me, so hesitant to drop $800 on it knowing I likely wouldn't keep it.
I think I will be getting this, because when it gets to the european rogue store the shipping will most likely be cheaper than kabuki. Kabuki was like more than the price of the actual bar last time I check (was of course not as bad in 2019/2020). Think I paid 250 dollars for my kabuki powerbar, like 500 dollars for my transformer bar...

Depends, some of the import bars are hit or miss with their knurling but the thing that throws me off the most with them is they can't figure out a smooth taper for the bar and it always seems too overdone.
@TheCarterHomeGym
2 жыл бұрын
@@BasementBrandon Yeah, the Yukon bar's knurling is pretty passive and the arch is definitely different. The CB4's arch is more pronounced and flattens out before reaching the sleeve, while the Yukon kind of tapers off into the sleeve. I personally think I would prefer the CB4 over the Yukon--particularly for the arch, knurling, and greater bar diameter--I'm just not sure it's worth upgrading for. I guess if buying new, the price tag vs the buyer's estimated frequency of use might be the biggest factor (CB4 is 2x the price). Thanks for the video, Brandon! Very informative.
@illestdomer2005
2 жыл бұрын
I don’t have a Duffalo bar, but the CB-4 camber seems much closer. Ever since Fringe started making their Longhorn bar in China, the arch is comical.
In your opinion, if you were deciding between the Duffalo and the CB-4, which one would you choose? I am going back and forth between the two and can't make a decision. I'm based in a garage and am worried about corrosion with the black oxide version from Kabuki, but the fact that the knurling is better and the finish is nicer, I can't decide.

I think the Rogue might make more sense FOR ME as it ends up being around $200 or so cheaper for a very similar experience and is different enough with the bigger diameter from my other bars. But you literally can't go wrong with either.

I don’t have it racked centered. You can see by how much knurl hangs off the cups.

@@lukea2806 take a look at 4:53. It’s definitely center racked, and the sleeve is angled upwards on the right sleeve facing the bar. All the other bars are perfectly parallel to include the left sleeve of the bar.
I am considering a buffalo bar (probably the cb-4) but I lift solo in my rogue rm-4 fortis. I use safety straps. I have never used a buffalo bar (or anything but a straight bar). I would like to use it for squat and bench (maybe overhead press as well). What I don't understand is how the safety straps will protect you from a curved bar that can roll. With my straight bar, due to the shape of my body, I have to have them set at an angle and the straight bar will roll/slide toward my head. But it can not reach my head. If I bail on a bench press lift (sudden muscle failure) what would stop it from rolling toward me and slamming me in the head? (a controlled slow failure obviously wouldn't present a problem, i.e. taking on one too many reps) Granted, I have never failed a bench press. And have only tested this in theory to make sure the straps are spaced properly. But still, that is probably my one hold up. The other issue is my j-cups are already just above the strap safety and I would have to lower them to account for the curve which will almost certainly necessitate more angle on the straps. Thoughts? Do you feel it is safe?

So the portions near the sleeves would hit first actually giving you a bit more wiggle room since the sleeves would be supported and the bend would be up. If you were to complete drop your hands off it, it might be more dicey.

@@BasementBrandon yeah, I was thinking sudden complete failure. This is incredibly unlikely at my age and lifting program. I don’t do stupid lifts or anything near them. But with a straight bar, the bar would almost certainly be contained. The biggest purpose of the buffalo bar for me is squat mobility. I take the widest grip I can and it’s still crazy tight. To the point where that is often the stressful part of the lift. Worst case is I could use it for squat and overhead and leave the chest press to the ohio bar. Thanks for the feedback!

@@BasementBrandon just a follow up: I received the cb-4 and the plates are so tight I can’t get them on and off the bar. I have requested a return. Have you tried a variety of plates? My vulcan alphas simply don’t work. I have to load weight on the opposite side sometimes to get a 45 off that is stuck without pulling the bar off the rack. Have you experienced any of this?

@@BasementBrandon I am contacting rogue. Unless both of these sleeves are well outside of QC parameters, I am concerned any sleeve with this coating won't work with my plates. I would love to buy urethane plates at some point, but it's not in the budget for quite a while. Anyway, gonna go research alternatives to the mg-4cn which was going to be my next purchase. I know you are using the mg-4. Do you have a full comparison with the kadillac yet? Looking for stability/comfort over everything else.

@@BasementBrandon I like it, but you already saw my comment on Facebook about the damage to it. Totally agree with your assessment of the packaging. I will add that Rogue told me they are going to foam in box for future orders, and I was one of 2 people who had received damaged bars so I guess the person from IG and me make 2. I agree that the Rogue logo looks a bit soft, but it’s only noticeable when you’re within a foot of it. That said, I think the bar itself looks and feels great - I am not worried about the logo. Love that you pointed out the Koala blocks. I have the Ghost Kabuki blocks, and while I am still using them with the CB-4, I am less than thrilled about loading it up since it just sits on the grooves. It’s really stable with the knurling past the J cups though so I need to try it on my Rogue sandwich cups to see if they’re even necessary. The camber felt great to me and a welcome change from my Longhorn bar which is WAY too pronounced. I’m curious if you’ve used it for any Good Mornings. I need to try those as I hate them with a regular straight bar and assume the 38mm should feel even better than my Longhorn where GMs are probably it’s best use case.
